Entry for the Shadow Contest/SMASh - Round

Welcome to my entry for today's SMASh contest from "The Shadow Hunters Community"!

I remember the walks I used to take with my parents to the center of the capital when I was a kid. The central area of one of Lisbon's busiest squares was almost always a mandatory point of passage. My father used to buy dried corn in small paper bags (it was possible back then... imagine) from a man who sold it there, so that he could distribute it to the pigeons that made the central sculptures in the square their real playground...

The very special light of the late afternoons made everything shine with a very special light. As well as selling seeds to feed the pigeons, there were also people selling a variety of sweets (handmade lollipops, flowers and fried dough). The photographers were then the true masters of a whole scene that danced before them.

With the tourists, at that time far fewer in number, and the locals, who had taken the opportunity to take a Saturday or Sunday afternoon to stroll around the Baixa, the professionals at capturing the moment appeared with their cameras ready to make the magic happen... Well, they were more ready to capture the moment of those brief seconds when the pigeons simply flew away, chasing their fears away, right into the palms of the little ones with a pile of “golden” seeds, offering them a completely free treat.

I still remember a picture my grandmother had in her living room of me surrounded by pigeons with a huge smile on my face... I must have been 3 or 4 years old... Great memories.

The other day, while I was spending time with my mother, sitting on a bench in an urban garden near our house, and having a little snack, our meal soon caught the attention of these curious and ever-attentive winged cuscuses... The late afternoon light reminded me of so many weekend afternoons I've spent. And I ended up registering their shadows cast on the concrete sidewalk, not the limestone one. Different times...

Bem vindos à minha entrada para o concurso do SMASh de hoje da comunidade "The Shadow Hunters"!

Recordo-me dos passeios que fazia com os meus pais até à baixa da capital, quando eu era miúdo. A zona central de uma das mais movimentadas praças de Lisboa, era quase sempre ponto obrigatório de passagem. O meu pai comprava milho seco em pequenos sacos de papel (naquela altura era possível... imaginem) a um senhor que por lá o vendia, para o poder distribuir pelos pombos que faziam das esculturas centrais da praça seu verdadeiro pelouro...

A luz muito especial dos fins de tarde, conseguiam salpicar tudo com uma luz muito especial. Para além do vendedor de sementes para alimentar os pombos, existiam também quem vendesse variados doces (chupa-chupas artesanais, flores, e fried dough). Os fotografos eram então verdadeiros senhores de todo um cenário que diante deles dançava.

Com os turistas, naquela altura em muito menor número, e com os locais, que tinham aproveitado para tirar a tarde de sábado ou de Domingo para passear pela Baixa, os profissionais da captura do momento, apareciam com as suas máquinas em riste, prontos para fazer a magia acontecer... Bem era mais prontos para conseguirem captar o momento daqueles segundos breves em que os pombos simplesmente voavam, afugentando os seus receios, até às palmas dos petizes com um montinho de sementes "douradas", que lhes ofereciam um manjar completamente gratuito.

Ainda me recordo de uma fotografia que a minha avó tinha na sua sala de estar, onde eu aparecia rodeado de pombos com um sorriso enorme na cara... deveria ter os meus 3 ou 4 anos... Boas recordações.

O outro dia, enquanto fazia tempo com a minha mãe, sentados num banco de um jardim urbano perto da nossa casa, e que tomávamos um pequeno lanche, logo a nossa refeição chamou a atenção destes curiosos e sempre atentos cuscos de asas... A luz do fim de tarde fez recordar-me tantas tardes de fim de semana que eu passei. E acabei por registar as suas sombras projectadas no passeio de cimento, e não de calcário. Diferentes tempos...
