Esa noche se terminaba el año, un año de pocos logros y grandes pérdidas en la vida de nuestro protagonista, en lo personal a Kirsteen Gabriel Höss, (ese nombre se lo había dado su padre), ya que así se llamó su abuelo europeo, aunque con tantas historias, ya no estaba seguro si era Finlandés, Alemán, o Polaco, en fin, decía que este año Kirsteen había tenido que darle el último adiós a su padre, viejo militar retirado, que era la única persona que quedaba de su familia con vida y que se había pasado sus últimos años defendiéndose de las acusaciones de pertenecer al nacional socialismo, Kirsteen siempre lo había apoyado.
También había tenido que asistir al sepelio de su mejor amigo, quien no aguantó más la miseria en la que vivía y se había pegado un tiro, nadie sabía muy bien de dónde diantres sacó aquel revólver, que la policía dijo que fue un verdadero golpe de suerte que aquella antigüedad haya servido para tan nefasto fin, y que luego en las experticias fuera imposible que volviera a funcionar.
Si bien a Kirsteen no le quedaban ya razones para vivir, después de su fracaso en los estudios de medicina, sin familia, ni hijos, ni la posibilidad de tenerlos, con semejante miseria a su alrededor, y acorralado por la sombra de su padre, ya que cuando esté murió, comenzaron a aparecer acreedores de todo tipo y enemigos de toda calaña, que lo obligaron a salir de la vieja casona por un tiempo, puesto que ni siquiera un empleo decente tenía, con el cual honrar aquellas deudas, que fue la única herencia que recibió de su padre.
Pero Kirsteen en aquella, la última noche de año viejo, solo pensaba en emborracharse hasta morir, nada le importaba, nada tenía sentido, así que volvió a la vieja casa de su padre, con dos botellas de aguardiente barato que pudo comprar, seguro estaba que cuando estuviera bien borracho, tendría el valor de volarse los sesos con el arma de reglamento de su padre.
Entró por la puerta principal, encendió todas las luces de la casa, y puso algo de música, dejándola que se repitiera hasta que se apagará el infierno, Antonio Vivaldi, las cuatro estaciones, estaba seguro que con aquel aguardiente era poco probable que llegara al invierno, Kirsteen era el más vivo ejemplo de que la cultura no tenía nada que ver con el dinero.

Lo primero que encontró fue una vieja pistola Luger, en perfecto estado de conservación y un juego de tres llaves con una cruz esvástica, una de las llaves decía bodega, así que tomó el llavero y se fue a recorrer la vieja casona, buscando aquella bodega a la que se refería, no pudo encontrarla, así que hizo un ejercicio de observación buscando dónde podía estar aquel cuarto secreto, no le costó mucho hallarlo, ya que conocía bien la casa, y justo detrás de la biblioteca había un espacio, que era el único lugar donde podía estar aquel salón secreto.
Comenzó a mover los libros, buscando un mecanismo que abriera la puerta secreta, mientras se decía a sí mismo que su padre debía tener también una caja fuerte con una fortuna guardada, ya que nunca se supo porqué de la noche a la mañana el general había despedido a la servidumbre y se había quedado solo con una cocinera que hacía el aseo y se retiraba después de la hora de la comida.
De pronto un libro llamó su atención, era un viejo tomó del Quijote, pero al tratar de levantarlo, se escuchó un clickear, sonaron unos goznes y la biblioteca se abrió de par en par.
Busco una pequeña linterna y pudo ver en el interior una bodega con todo tipo de licores, cada uno más viejo y costoso que el otro, eufórico, tomó un par de botellas de whisky de 25 años y se dirigió nuevamente al despacho de su padre.
En la estancia comenzaba a dejarse caer el otoño, aunque para Kirsteen ya parecía que había vuelto la primavera.
Destapó una de las botellas, no sin antes lanzar contra la pared las dos botellas de aguardiente que había comprado con lo único que le quedaba en los bolsillos, y comenzó a degustar aquel elíxir de los dioses que significaba para él cada sorbo, brindo por su mejor amigo, pensó que si hubiera hecho antes este descubrimiento seguramente este estaría vivo y bebiendo con él, también brindo por su padre, a pesar de nunca llegar a conocerlo bien lo admiraba, y este siempre le trató con respeto.
Volvió a los cajones del escritorio, fue cuando encontró las cartas de él a su madre, y también una carta de esta diciéndole al viejo general que se iría para siempre, que solo volvería a la casa a recoger las cosas de los niños y que está se encargaría de que no viera nunca más a sus hijos, esto lo desconcertó completamente:

Buscó detalladamente con precisión, la vieja construcción era muy rica en detalles, los azulejos en la pared habían sido colocados tal vez para distraer a cualquier intruso, pero Kirsteen no era un intruso, y ya estaba seguro que había una caja fuerte con una fortuna allí, casi al alcance de su mano.

Cruzó la puertecilla y la lámpara iluminó la pequeña estancia, pero lejos de encontrar el tesoro que esperaba, en aquel terrible cuarto secreto de su padre, lo que encontró lo tomó completamente desprevenido.
Cuando al fin sus ojos se acostumbraron a la semi-oscuridad, y dirigió la lámpara hacia el fondo del cuartito, pudo distinguir los restos del cadáver de una mujer, esta hacía mucho tiempo que se había descompuesto, Kirsteen se detuvo horrorizado por un segundo, pero rápidamente se convenció que debía ser su madre, está estaba encadenada a una especie de potro o viga, (no pudo distinguirlo bien) y junto a ella, restos de dos cadáveres más pequeños, eran dos niñas, pudo darse cuenta de ello por el largo de sus cabellos, y porqué entre sus huesos habían despojos de muñecas de trapo.
Kirsteen ante este dantesco espectáculo enloqueció, salió huyendo de aquel terrible lugar, se fijó por un segundo en la caja fuerte que había al fondo de la habitación, pero ya no le importó, solo la botella que aún tenía en la mano izquierda significaba algo para él.
Cruzó la estancia como un loco, se podía escuchar como el invierno cubría toda la casa con sus hermosas notas, pero Kirsteen lo ignoró también, se dirigió al despacho de su padre, totalmente rebasado por el odio y un sentimiento de impotencia que le hacía muy difícil respirar.
Al entrar al viejo despacho tomó la vieja pistola de su padre, y la descargo completa en el viejo retrato en la pared.
Se tomó un trago, largo y espaciado, este hubiese sido suficiente para matar a cualquier cristiano, pero Kirsteen estaba poseído por un sentimiento que lo estaba consumiendo, totalmente borracho, pensaba en su madre, en el hecho de que nunca la conoció, en sus hermanas, inocentes niñas víctimas de aquel maldito viejo machista, lloró amargamente, pensó que su vida hubiera sido muy distinta con su madre y sus hermanas, lanzó la botella sin destapar que había quedado sobre el escritorio, afuera, el bullicio y los fuegos artificiales anunciaban la llegada del año nuevo, al fondo el invierno de Vivaldi lo cubría todo, luego sacó la vieja Luger del cajón, y sólo alcanzó a decir antes de volarse la cabeza:
