Cuento corto: El nido y el jabillo/The nest and the jabillo

La palomita maraquita sabía que ya debía comenzar a hacer su nido para poner sus huevos y le dijo a su compañero que tenían que comenzar a buscar un lugar adecuado que fuera seguro.

Volando alrededor del bosquecito donde ellos habitaban, pudieron observar que había muchos árboles, unos muy altos, otros bajos, unos muy frondosos con muchas ramas y hojas y otros que debido a la sequía habían perdido sus hojas y solo tenían ramas secas, parecían árboles muertos pero... no lo estaban, solo esperaban las lluvias para producir hojas y luego flores y frutos.

En esos días hacía mucho calor y los huevos debían estar bajo sombra, así que los árboles sin hojas no eran convenientes.

—¡Mira el samán y el caobo!, —dijo el palomito, son árboles altos y tienen muchas ramas y hojas, allí tal vez pudiéramos hacer el nido, y ambos se dirigieron hasta allá.

—Son muy altos, y tendríamos que volar mucho para ir y venir a buscar las ramitas, —respondió la palomita. Además no hay comida cerca de este árbol, sus semillas no me gustan, son muy grandes.

De repente vieron unas lagartijas enormes, subiendo rápidamente por el tronco y las ramas. Ellos se asustaron y pensaron que esos árboles no eran muy seguros y estas lagartijas se podían comer los huevos. Así que continuaron buscando.

Vieron a lo lejos unas palmeras con muchas hojas en forma de penacho y se acercaron. Tal vez este pudiera ser un buen lugar y la palmera no tiene ramas y a las lagartijas tal vez se les haga difícil subir, además tienen unos frutos rojos que se ven muy sabrosos. Pero al acercarse, escucharon una gran algarabía, loros y guacamayas tenían allí su hogar y a las palomitas no les quedo otra alternativa que seguir buscando.

Estaban un poco cansadas y ya el día estaba perdiendo su luz, las aves no vuelan de noche y se acuestan temprano a dormir, así que decidieron descansar y continuar su búsqueda en la mañana. Y como estaban cerca de un árbol de samán donde había muchas aves, se quedaron allí para estar en compañía.

Al despertar muy temprano cuando los primeros rayos de sol se hicieron presentes, las palomitas comenzaron a buscar de nuevo, ya era urgente encontrar el árbol adecuado.

Llegaron hasta un cedro que estaba en flor, muy frondoso y se acercaron, pero un olor muy penetrante los hizo alejarse un poco.
—Este árbol es muy bonito, pero no me gusta como huele, dijo la palomita, y yo tengo que pasar horas echada en el nido con ese olor
—Pero tú sabes que nosotros nos turnamos calentando los huevos, —le respondió el palomito
—Mejor no, porque creo que me marearía, no lo soportaría, así que mejor sigamos buscando.

Llegaron a un claro en el bosquecito donde había un árbol de hojas grandes y muy verdes, su tallo estaba lleno de espina muy gruesas y filosas y en sus ramas también habían espinas un poco más pequeñas.
—¡Este árbol sí que está armado! —dijo la palomita, no creo que las lagartijas ni ningún otro animal pueda subir por allí
—Y además hay mucha sombra
—Y no es tan alto como el samán.
—Y no tiene mal olor como la ceiba y el palomito emitió un gorgojeo de alegría
—¡Este va a ser nuestro árbol! exclamó feliz la palomita. ¡Ya encontramos nuestro hogar!

Y así desde ese momento, iniciaron la construcción de su nido entre las ramas del árbol, ese que los hombres llaman Jabillo, recogiendo ramitas y uniéndolas con barro fueron dándole forma al lugar donde empollarían sus huevitos hasta que, pasados unos días, nacieron sus dos hijos. Las sombras del jabillo los protegía del fuerte sol y sus espinas no dejaban que ninguna lagartija se los comiera. Ellos le hacían compañía y lo alegraban con sus cantos y además se comían los insectos que lo molestaban.

Flying around the forest where they lived, they could see that there were many trees, some very tall, some low, some very leafy with many branches and leaves and others that due to the drought had lost their leaves and only had dry branches, they looked like dead trees but... they were not, they were just waiting for the rains to produce leaves and then flowers and fruits.

In those days it was very hot and the eggs had to be in the shade, so leafless trees were not suitable.

-Look at the saman and the mahogany," said the little pigeon, "they are tall trees and have many branches and leaves, maybe we could make the nest there," and they both went there.

-It's a little high, and we'd have to fly a lot to get back and forth to get the twigs," replied the little pigeon. Besides, there is no food near this tree, and I don't like the seeds, they are too big.

Suddenly they saw some huge lizards, climbing quickly up the trunk and branches. They got scared and thought that these trees were not very safe and these lizards could eat the eggs. So they continued searching.

They saw some palm trees in the distance with many tufted leaves and approached. Maybe this could be a good place and the palm tree has no branches and the lizards might have a hard time climbing it, plus they have some red fruits that look very tasty. But as they approached, they heard a great noise, parrots and macaws had their home there and the popcorn had no choice but to keep looking.

They were a little tired and the day was losing its light, birds do not fly at night and go to bed early to sleep, so they decided to rest and continue their search in the morning. And as they were near a saman tree where there were many birds, they stayed there to be in company.

Waking up very early when the first rays of sunlight were present, the popcorns began to search again, it was urgent to find the right tree.

They came to a cedar tree that was in bloom, very leafy and they approached it, but a very pungent smell made them move away a little.
-This tree is very pretty, but I don't like the way it smells," said the little dove, "and I have to spend hours lying in the nest with that smell," said the little dove.
-But you know that we take turns heating the eggs," replied the little pigeon.
-I'd better not, because I think I'd get dizzy, I couldn't stand it, so we'd better keep looking.

They came to a clearing in the forest where there was a tree with large green leaves, its stem was full of very thick and sharp thorns and its branches also had slightly smaller thorns.
-This tree is really armed! -I don't think that lizards or any other animal can climb up there," said the little dove.
-And there's plenty of shade, too.
-And it's not as tall as the saman.
-And it doesn't smell as bad as the ceiba," and the little pigeon gurgled with joy.
-This is going to be our tree! exclaimed the little dove happily. We have found our home!

And so from that moment, they began the construction of their nest among the branches of the tree, the one that men call "Jabillo", collecting twigs and joining them with mud, they were shaping the place where they would hatch their eggs until, after a few days, their two children were born. The shadows of the jabillo protected them from the strong sun and its thorns did not let any lizard eat them. They kept him company and made him happy with their songs and also ate the insects that bothered him.
