Nunca he sido persona de peleas, los golpes me gustan, pero solo en las películas. Siempre he estado en la actitud de que la mejor pelea es la que se evita y en un par de oportunidades que la situación puso en acción los puños, mis contrincantes se quedaron esperando ver los míos en acción.

Cuando llegamos a vivir a Alemania, en 1969, yo apenas estaba por cumplir los nueve años. Desde nuestra llegada, la receptividad de los otros niños fue estupenda y muy pronto empecé a integrarme a los grupos que se formaban en el parque que había detrás de mi casa, donde habían toboganes, caja de arena y barras de ejercicio. Allí y en mi nueva escuela conseguí amigos y mi vida empezó un transitar normal, cual los demás niños alemanes.
Sin embargo, existían algunos niños que albergaban en su ser una xenofobia que les costaba ocultar y que me la hacían ver cada vez que tenían la oportunidad, sin comprometerse públicamente. Pero yo era ajeno a sus intenciones y por lo general todo quedaba en provocaciones en las que yo no caía.
Un amigo venezolano-español, Manolo García, que estudiaba allá, a sabiendas de este tipo de situación, de manera muy discreta me convenció de que me integrara a una actividad deportiva. Curiosamente el deporte que él propuso fue boxeo y con el aval de mis padres, me empezó a llevar a los entrenamientos, los cuales yo entendí como lo planteado: una actividad deportiva.
Pero la verdad es que era una actividad con la que no sentía ninguna afinidad y que en el último de los casos tampoco tenía previsto usarlo como “defensa” ante las mencionadas e insulsas manifestaciones racistas. Así que las prácticas se fueron diluyendo hasta quedar en el olvido.
En virtud de que esa “acciones” eran poco comunes, yo nunca le di mayor protagonismo en mi vida y así pasaron un par de años. Hasta que me tocó un cambio de escuela, por habernos mudado a una zona más céntrica de Berlín, a unos escasos 500 metros de la plaza central de la capital alemana, la Alexanderplatz.

Apenas entré a esa nueva escuela, de la que guardo mis mejores recuerdos estudiantiles en ese país, la “Ernst Wildangel Oberschule”, hice nuevo y buenos amigos, pero así mismo volvieron a aparecer algunos molestos defensores del ya para ese momento obsoleto lema de “Alemania sobre todo”.
En esa época teníamos unos grandes amigos mexicanos, la familia Semo, en la que uno de los hijos practicaba judo. No sé si sería nuevamente con intenciones de “darme herramientas de defensa”, terminé practicando esa disciplina, que al igual que la otra, no despertó mayor interés en mí.
Sin embargo yo cumplía con todas las dinámicas y tareas que me imponían y así empecé a aprender los distintos kata, las posiciones, caídas, agarres, defensas y las primeras llaves. Empecé a entender aquello de “utilizar la fuerza del otro” y, aunque no me apasionaba, me distraía y lo hacía sin mayor esfuerzo. Para mí se trataba simplemente de una práctica deportiva, pues la defensa personal no era un tema que me inquietaba.
El verano de 1971, recién terminadas las vacaciones escolares y empezando las clases, salgo a uno de los recreos, en el patio frente a la escuela y sin darme cuenta me alejé del resto de los alumnos. Allí noto que viene hacia mi un grupo de cuatro o cinco chicos de los que buscaban siempre la manera de intimidarme. Uno de ellos asumió el rol de líder, cual pandilla, y se les adelantó a los demás. Entre improperios me toma con una de sus manos por el cuello de la camisa y con la otra mano, toma mi brazo, a la vez que empieza a empujarme.
Con la fuerza de su empuje, empezamos como un baile en el que yo iba de retroceso, mientras él avanzaba con fuerza. Para evitar caerme, yo también le sujeté el brazo y con la otra mano me aferré a su chaqueta.
Los detractores del judo, como forma de defensa personal, alegan que en la vida nunca se dan las condiciones que exige esta arte marcial para poder realizar sus ataques. Pero en esta ocasión era todo lo contrario, lo único que faltaba era el quimono y la lona para suavizar las caídas, pero sobre todo, faltaba el espíritu deportivo.
Pero eso no fue motivo que me impidiera a mí, en mi marcha hacia atrás, flexionar un poco mis rodillas, girar mi cuerpo 180 grados y ver como mi belicoso oponente salía disparado por los aires, por encima de mis espalda, al yo extender mis piernas, sin el más mínimo esfuerzo. Como era de esperarse, luego de alcanzar su altura, la gravedad se encargó de arrojarlo al piso con gran impacto y arrancar de su garganta un grito que era más producto de la vergüenza, que del dolor. Él se quedó tendido allí, aguantando las lágrimas, mientras sus amigotes esperaban paralizados algún desenlace. Yo pasé caminando entre ellos y luego corrí para entrar nuevamente en la escuela.
Pasaron los días y para mi sorpresa no hubo una citación, no hubo un llamado a los padres, no hubo un regaño. Solo un par de días después de aquel combate sin colchoneta, sin árbitro y con un escaso público que diera testimonio del resultado, me llamó mi profesora guía para entregarme un documento oficial que en letras grandes tenía escrita la palabra “Judoverbot”, que significa prohibición de judo y que había sido enviado a la federación de ese deporte. Noticia que por la poca pasión que despertaba en mí ese deporte, no me trajo ningún desvelo.
El segundo desenlace que tuvo aquella sorpresiva e indeseada justa, fue que no volví a experimentar el rechazo de aquel grupito de desadaptados y el resto de mi estadía en Alemania se siguió llenando de cada vez más recuerdos hermosos y felices.

I've never been a fighter, I like fights, but only in the movies. I have always been of the attitude that the best fight is the one that is avoided, and on a couple of occasions when the situation brought the fists into action, my opponents kept waiting to see mine in action.
When we came to live in Germany in 1969, I was just shy of my ninth birthday. From the moment we arrived, the receptiveness of the other children was great and I soon began to join the groups that formed in the park behind my house, where there were slides, sandboxes and exercise bars. There and at my new school I made friends and my life began to go along normally, just like the other German children.
However, there were some kids who harbored a xenophobia that they had trouble hiding and who showed it to me whenever they had the opportunity, without publicly committing themselves. But I was oblivious to their intentions and generally everything remained as provocations in which I did not fall.
A Venezuelan-Spanish friend of ours, Manolo García, who was studying there, knowing about this kind of situation, very discreetly convinced me to join a sporting activity. Curiously, the sport he proposed was boxing and with my parents' endorsement, he began to take me to the training sessions, which I understood as what was proposed: a sporting activity.
But the truth is that it was an activity with which I did not feel any affinity and that in the last case I did not plan to use it as a "defense" against the aforementioned and senseless racist manifestations. So the practices were diluted until they were forgotten.
By virtue of the fact that these "actions" were uncommon, I never gave them more prominence in my life and so a couple of years went by. Until I had to change schools, because we had moved to a more central area of Berlin, just 500 meters from the central square of the German capital, the Alexanderplatz.
As soon as I entered that new school, of which I keep my best student memories in that country, the "Ernst Wildangel Oberschule", I made new and good friends, but at the same time some annoying defenders of the already by that time obsolete motto of "Germany above all" reappeared.
At that time we had some great Mexican friends, the Semo family, in which one of the sons practiced judo. I do not know if it was again with the intention of "giving me defense tools", I ended up practicing this discipline, which like the other, did not arouse much interest in me.
However, I complied with all the dynamics and tasks that were imposed on me and so I began to learn the different kata, positions, falls, grabs, defenses and the first judo chops. I began to understand that concept of "using the other's strength" and, although I was not passionate about it, it distracted me and I did it without much effort. For me it was simply a sporting practice, because self-defense was not a subject that concerned me.

In the summer of 1971, just after the school vacations and the beginning of classes, I went out to one of the recesses, in the courtyard in front of the school, and without realizing it, I moved away from the rest of the students. There I noticed a group of four or five boys coming towards me, who were always looking for ways to intimidate me. One of them took on the role of leader, like a gang, and went ahead of the others. Between expletives he grabs me with one of his hands by the collar of my shirt and with the other hand he grabs my arm and starts to push me.
With the force of his thrust, we started like a dance in which I went backwards, while he went forward with force. To avoid falling, I also grabbed his arm and with the other hand I held on to his jacket.
The detractors of judo, as a form of self-defense, claim that in life there are never the conditions that this martial art demands to be able to carry out its attacks. But on this occasion it was quite the opposite, the only thing missing was the kimono and the canvas to soften the falls, but above all, the sportsmanship was missing.
But that was no reason that prevented me, in my backward march, to bend my knees a little, turn my body 180 degrees and watch as my bellicose opponent shot through the air, over my back, as I extended my legs without the slightest effort. As expected, after reaching his height, gravity took care of throwing him to the ground with great impact and tearing from his throat a scream that was more a product of embarrassment than pain. He lay there, holding back tears, while his friends waited paralyzed for some outcome. I walked past them and then ran back into the school.
Days passed and to my surprise there was no summons, no call to parents, no scolding. Only a couple of days after that fight without a mat, without a referee and with a scarce audience to testify the result, my guide teacher called me to give me an official document that in big letters had the word "Judoverbot" written on it, which means judo ban and that had been sent to the judo federation. News that, due to the little passion that I had for the sport, did not bring me any sleeplessness.
The second outcome of that surprising and unwanted joust was that I never again experienced the rejection of that little group of misfits and the rest of my stay in Germany continued to be filled with more and more beautiful and happy memories.
