Although I haven't posted here for a while, it's my pleasure to share content again for this beautiful community of reading and writing. Today I come to talk about my favorite saga in the world, specifically the first book, which made me start to love reading and has brought me to this point in my life; inspired by this saga I started my journey as a writer and already creating my own universes. Today I come to talk about The Hunger Games, a very successful science fiction saga.
Today marks the premiere of the movie The Hunger Games, an adaptation of the saga of the same name by Suzanne Collins. To say that it was a worldwide phenomenon is an understatement, because it had an incredible reception, especially being a film starring a woman, and there are no words to say how much I loved watching that movie.
But, I won't talk about the movie itself, but about how much I became obsessed with this saga, because after watching the first movie, I had the need to read all the books, download PDFs, buy merchandise of the saga and well, I got here, to the point of wanting to get a tattoo of a Mockingjay, the symbol of the revolution and of a saga with which I grew up and lived my best moments as a teenager. The book begins with a young girl, Katniss Everdeen and her "adventures" in order to get her daily bread. It tells the terrible experiences of a young girl who lost her father and lives in the poorest area of a country made up of twelve districts and a capital, known as the Capitol, the area of the wealthy. Katniss is nervous because it is Reaping day, that is, a boy and a girl between 12 and 18 years of age will be chosen by each district to be taken to the annual event, a reminder of the power of the Capitol, as a total of twenty-four children will fight to the death to have a winner, who will be rewarded with fame and wealth, and their district will be honored and benefited.
Katniss has a little sister, a sweet little girl who just turned twelve, and is even more nervous, but Katniss comforts her that she has almost no chance of being chosen. Against all odds, picking the girl at random, Katniss' younger sister Primrose is the name that comes up. Katniss in a complete state of shock and an adrenaline rush offers herself as a tribute to go instead of her sister to the games.

The book is narrated in first person, which makes us miss some details of the plot, things that Katniss does not know and that the reader must investigate, but it has a great advantage: It makes you feel the experiences and emotions of our protagonist with even more intensity, and we get to know her character in a more personal way. Katniss is stubborn, distrustful and has few friends, but she loves her close people with intensity, especially Prim, whom she protects with her soul since the death of her father, since her mother went into a depression that made her unable to react, practically a Zombie. Katniss has a friend, Gale, a young man who also lost his father and is a little older than her, with whom she has a very strong bond, but she dismisses love because she cannot afford to fall in love and then lose him.
After the reaping, we are taken on a journey to another lifestyle totally different from the one we are introduced to at the beginning. The first thing we see is a train with much more food than Katniss will have seen in her entire life, a train that takes her to the Capitol, where the show begins with several parts. First a parade with her partner, then a series of trainings, interviews and tests where they will see how good the players are and prepare them psychologically and physically for the games. We get to meet endearing and unbearable characters, such as Haymitch, their mentor, Effie, their manager and Cinna, their designer.

Also, being a book with a young audience, we have our main romantic interest and our villain. Peeta Mellark, the sweet boy who saved Katniss's life once, years before what is happening at the moment, a kind-hearted man, a resident of District 12, but the son of a baker, he was poor but not like Katniss. He will develop a relationship with Katniss from the moment they enter the train to the Capitol until the end of the whole saga.
Our most feared villain, or at least the greatest of all those who appear throughout the book, President Snow, a white-haired man with all the power in the world, as he is the president of all of Panem. He is intelligent, cruel and powerful, the makings of a thoroughly loathsome villain, but one who in the first book has very little presence. I find Snow to be an excellent villain, in the sense that it's impossible not to hate him; he doesn't leave you with the feeling that you can understand him or connect with him, you can only hate him.

The games are barbaric, but my favorite part is before the games, when they take you on a tour of the Capitol, meeting these people who are completely unaware of the level of sadism that goes into watching twenty-four young kids fight to the death. They are shallow and eccentric, with colorful and celebrity-colored outfits, full of luxuries and comforts, looking forward to seeing the outfits they will put on the Tributes (the twenty-four players). It's twisted in the extreme, but at the same time it's so glamorous that it makes you love every bit of it. Cinna, from Katniss' point of view, is the only person she likes in the Capitol, as he's a designer who offered to dress her, doesn't wear so many eccentricities and has exquisite taste in fashion, to the point of setting them on synthetic fire for the first fashion show, where they gained everyone's attention, including Snow, who starts to see Katniss as a threat.
Finally we have the games, a part that makes you feel adrenaline every second. Katniss is a smart player, she is a professional hunter as life forced her to hunt her food, and a good strategist, as she manages to make two alliances in the arena. One of the alliances is with a twelve-year-old girl from District 11, with whom she establishes a friendship.

🚨Spoiler alert!!!
The death of Rue, her friend from District 11, is heartbreaking and gives a development to Katniss as a character that is what starts the whole arc of the entire saga, as Katniss shows respect to the whole District 11 (remember that all this is televised), and this simple gesture ignites a huge revolution in the country, it is a key moment for what the following books will be.
Peeta also has a very important participation, from Katniss' point of view, he is someone more malevolent than he appears, since his strategy during the interview before all Panem was to tell her that he was in love with her, which to Katniss seems a great betrayal. Then this serves as a strategy for them, because in the games they make an announcement, there can be two winners as long as they are both from the same district. Katniss, after hating him, runs to rescue him, as Peeta was alive but almost dead. There, in the games, they fall in love little by little, although according to Katniss, it's all about a strategy to get them both out of there alive.
In the end, when Katniss and Peeta manage to beat everyone, the previously established rule is eliminated, and only one of the two of them can win. Katniss, rebellious by nature, and very smart, says that they will commit suicide, either they have two winners or they are left with none. They both come out triumphant and a much worse journey begins, a sicker battle, for now President Snow is not happy at all, two people from the poorest district not only managed to come out as victors, but they awaken a feeling in everyone: The Capitol is not as powerful as it appears to be.
The end of the book shows how Haymitch is very worried, he knows that President Snow will not take these actions lightly, so Katniss now doesn't feel like a winner either, and above all, she feels inhuman for having been responsible for the death of other people. It's a very good ending, because not only does it leave you wanting more, but it also shows you that a big storm is coming for our amazing protagonist, who has just defeated some diabolical games and will now have to face something much bigger.

I have no words to describe how much I love this saga, especially the first book. I remember jumping for joy when I got the first book in physical, since then I have read it countless times. Not only is it interesting, has a fast and innovative plot, but it is also easy to read, doesn't feel heavy and describes very well every single thing, every scenario, something excellent to have done it from a first person narration.
Suzanne Collins is in my top of writers, just for this saga, which makes me want to read it again every so often. It is so well written, with so many details that explain the history of a post-apocalyptic reality, giving us details of wars that happened to get there, of previous revolutions that originate the creation of this sadistic competition between children, just to constantly implant terror.

It has a very good critique of capitalism, the advantage of the rich and privileged and a reality of the marginalized. It shows a side that, unfortunately, is human and it is something that, as unlikely as it sounds, it would not be surprising if it happened. It's a strong plot, it's perfect to digest it easy but still make a critique of our society, and even better, bring it to a young audience, with minds willing to learn.
I love this saga, I love the first book and I love its movie adaptation. This book literally inspired me to be the writer I am today. And, in fact, as I finish with this review, I will go straight to reread the book one more time. That book is my safe place, so I'll give it a 10 / 10, and it could easily be more.

A pesar de que tenía tiempo sin publicar por acá, es mi placer volver a compartir contenido por esta preciosa comunidad de lectura y escritura. Hoy vengo a hablarles de mi saga favorita en todo el mundo, en específico del primer libro, que me hizo empezar a amar la lectura y me ha traído a este punto de mi vida, inspirado por esta saga empecé mi recorrido como escritor y ya creando mis propios universos. Hoy les vengo a hablar de Los Juegos Del Hambre, una saga muy exitosa de ciencia ficción.
El día de hoy se celebra la premier de la película Los Juegos Del Hambre, una adaptación de la saga homónima de Suzanne Collins. Decir que fue todo un fenómeno mundial se queda corto, pues tuvo una increíble recepción, sobre todo al ser un film protagonizado por una mujer, y no hay palabras para decir lo mucho que amé ver esa película.
Pero, no hablaré de la película en sí, sino de lo mucho que me obsesioné con esta saga, pues luego de ver la primera película, tuve la necesidad de leer todos los libros, descargar PDFs, comprar mercancía de la saga y bueno, llegué hasta aquí, al punto de querer tatuarme un sinsajo, el símbolo de la revolución y de una saga con la que crecí y viví mis mejores momentos de adolescentes. El libro empieza con una joven, Katniss Everdeen y sus “aventuras” para poder conseguir el pan de cada día. Relata las terribles vivencias de una joven que perdió a su padre y vive en la zona más pobre de un país formado por doce distritos y una capital, conocida como Capitolio, la zona de los adinerados. Katniss está nerviosa porque es día de Cosecha, es decir, escogerán por cada distrito a un chico y una chica de entre 12 a 18 años de edad para ser llevados al evento anual, un recordatorio del poder del Capitolio, pues un total de veinticuatro niños lucharán a muerte para tener un vencedor, quién será recompensado con fama y riqueza, y su distrito será honrado y beneficiado.
Katniss tiene una pequeña hermana, una dulce niña que apenas cumplió doce años, y está aún más nerviosa, pero Katniss la consuela con que no tiene casi chances de salir elegida. Contra todo pronóstico, al escoger a la niña al azar, el nombre de Primrose, la hermana menor de Katniss, es el que sale. Katniss en un completo estado de shock y un impulso de adrenalina se ofrece como tributo para ir ella en lugar de su hermana a los juegos.

El libro está narrado en primera persona, lo que hace que nos perdamos algunos detalles de la trama, cosas que desconoce Katniss y que el lector deberá ir investigando, pero tiene una ventaja grande: Te hace sentir las vivencias y emociones de nuestra protagonista con aún más intensidad, y logramos conocer su carácter de una forma más personal. Katniss es terca, desconfiada y de pocos amigos, pero ama a sus personas cercanas con intensidad, más que todo a Prim, a quién protege con su alma desde la muerte de su padre, ya que su madre entró en una depresión que hacía que no pudiera reaccionar, prácticamente un Zombie. Katniss tiene un amigo, Gale, un joven que también perdió a su padre y es un poco mayor que ella, con quién tiene un lazo muy fuerte, pero ella descarta el amor porque no puede permitirse enamorarse y luego perderlo.
Luego de la cosecha, nos llevan en un viaje a otro estilo de vida totalmente distinto al que nos presentan al principio. Lo primero que vemos es un tren con mucha más comida de la que Katniss habrá visto en toda su vida, un tren que la lleva al Capitolio, donde empieza el show con varias partes. Primero un desfile junto a su compañero, luego una serie de entrenamientos, entrevistas y pruebas donde verán que tan buenos son los jugadores y los preparan psicológica y físicamente para los juegos. Logramos a conocer a personajes entrañables e insoportables, como Haymitch, su mentor, Effie, su representante y Cinna, su diseñador.

También, al ser un libro con público juvenil, tenemos nuestro interés romántico principal y nuestro villano. Peeta Mellark, el chico dulce que le salvó la vida a Katniss en una oportunidad, años antes de lo que está pasando al momento, alguien de buen corazón, residente del Distrito 12, pero hijo de un panadero, era pobre pero no como Katniss. Él desarrollará una relación con Katniss desde el momento en que entran al tren rumbo al Capitolio hasta el final de toda la saga.
Nuestro más temido villano, o al menos el más grande de todos los que aparecen a lo largo del libro, el Presidente Snow, un hombre de cabellera blanca y con todo el poder del mundo, pues es el presidente de todo Panem. Es inteligente, cruel y poderoso, las características de un villano totalmente odiable, pero que en el primer libro tiene muy poca presencia. Me parece que Snow es un excelente villano, en el sentido que es imposible no odiarlo; no te deja con la sensación de poder entenderlo ni conectar con él, solo puedes odiarlo.

Los juegos son una barbarie, pero mi parte favorita es antes de los juegos, cuando te llevan por un recorrido al Capitolio, conociendo a estas personas que ignoran por completo el nivel de sadismo que hay en ver a veinticuatro jóvenes pelear a muerte. Ellos son superficiales y excéntricos, con vestimentas coloridas y celebres, llenos de lujos y comodidades, deseando ver los vestidos que les pondrán a los Tributos (los veinticuatro jugadores). Es en extremo retorcido, pero al mismo tiempo es tan glamuroso que te hace amar cada parte. Cinna, desde el punto de vista de Katniss, es la única persona que le gusta del Capitolio, pues es un diseñador que se ofreció a vestirla, no usa tantas excentricidades y tiene un gusto exquisito por la moda, al punto de prenderlos en fuego sintético para el primer desfile, donde ellos ganaron la atención de todos, incluido Snow, quien empieza a ver a Katniss como una amenaza.
Finalmente tenemos los juegos, una parte que te hace sentir adrenalina cada segundo. Katniss es una jugadora inteligente, es una cazadora profesional pues la vida la obligó a cazar sus alimentos, y una buena estratega, pues logra hacer dos alianzas en la arena. Una de las alianzas es con una jovencita de doce años, del Distrito 11, con quién establece una amistad.

🚨¡¡Alerta de Spoiler!!
La muerte de Rue, su amiga del Distrito 11, es desgarradora y le da un desarrollo a Katniss como personaje que es lo que inicia todo el arco de la saga completa, pues Katniss le muestra respeto a todo el Distrito 11 (recordemos que todo esto es televisado), y este simple gesto enciende una enorme revolución en el país, es un momento clave para lo que serán los siguientes libros.
Peeta también tiene una participación muy importante, desde el punto de vista de Katniss, es alguien más malévolo de lo que aparenta, pues su estrategia durante la entrevista ante todo Panem fue decirle que él estaba enamorado de ella, lo que a Katniss le parece una gran traición. Luego esto sirve como estrategia para ellos, pues en los juegos hacen un anuncio, podrá haber dos ganadores siempre y cuando sean ambos del mismo distrito. Katniss, luego de odiarlo, corre a rescatarlo, pues Peeta estaba vivo pero casi muerto. Ahí, en los juegos, se enamoran poco a poco, aunque según Katniss, todo se trata de una estrategia para ambos salir vivos de allí.
Al final, cuando Katniss y Peeta logran vencer a todos, la regla anteriormente establecida, es eliminada, y solo uno de ellos dos podrá ganar. Katniss, alguien rebelde por naturaleza, y muy inteligente, dice que se suicidarán, o tienen a dos ganadores o se quedan sin ninguno. Salen triunfantes los dos y empieza un viaje mucho peor, una batalla más enfermiza, pues ahora el Presidente Snow no está nada contento, dos personas del distrito más pobre no solo lograron salir como vencedores, sino que despiertan un sentimiento en todos: El Capitolio no es tan poderoso como aparenta ser.
El final del libro muestra como Haymitch está muy preocupado, sabe que el Presidente Snow no tomará estas acciones a la ligera, por lo que Katniss ahora tampoco se siente ganadora, y sobre todo, se siente inhumana por haber sido responsable por la muerte de otras personas. Es un final muy bueno, porque no solo te deja con ganas de más, sino que también te muestra que se aproxima una gran tormenta para nuestra increíble protagonista, quién acaba de vencer a unos diabólicos juegos y ahora deberá enfrentar algo mucho más grande.

No tengo palabras para describir lo mucho que amo esta saga, en especial el primer libro. Recuerdo saltar de alegría cuando me compraron el primer libro en físico, desde entonces lo he leído incontables veces. No solo es interesante, tiene una trama rápida e innovadora, sino que también es fácil de leer, no se siente pesado y describe muy bien cada cosa, cada escenario, algo excelente para haberlo hecho desde una narración en primera persona.
Suzanne Collins está en mi top de escritores, solo por esta saga, que me hace querer volver a leerla cada cierto tiempo. Está tan bien escrita, con tantos detalles que explican la historia de una realidad post-apocalíptica, dándonos detalles de guerras que pasaron para llegar a eso, de revoluciones anteriores que originan la creación de esta sádica competencia entre niños, solo para constantemente implantar terror.

Tiene una muy buena crítica al capitalismo, a la ventaja de los ricos y privilegiados y a una realidad de marginados. Muestra un lado que, lamentablemente, es humano y es algo que por improbable que suene, no sería de extrañarse que pasara. Es una trama fuerte, es perfecta para digerirla fácil pero aún así hacer una crítica a nuestra sociedad, y aún mejor, llevarla a un público joven, con mentes dispuestas a aprender.
Amo esta saga, amo el primer libro y amo su adaptación al cine. Este libro literalmente me inspiró a ser el escritor que soy hoy en día. Y, de hecho, al terminar con esta reseña, iré directo a releer el libro una vez más. Ese libro es mi sitio seguro, así que le daré un 10 / 10, y fácilmente podría ser más.
