I like large-format books that play with design and illustration, honoring the pen of the author who left the soul in ink. For a time I was digging through second-hand bookstores and the stacked piles of booksellers on the streets, to see if I could find a treasure of paper, like the one I show here. The text is by the writer Jorge Luis Borges, and it is the first edition of the book Rosa y Azul, from 1977. The editorial work of Sermay Ediciones is precious, isn't it? ;). Here are some photos I took with my phone.
The book is made up of two stories, the Rose of Paracelsus and the Blue Tigers. The illustrations are by Alfredo González, an admirable artist. My favorite story is Tigres Azules, it plays with the dreamlike, with the beauty of the tiger as a "symbol of terrible elegance" and a series of events that take an unexpected course. I share some excerpts to see if it catches
“I know that as a boy I would linger before one particular cage at the zoo; the others held no interest for me. I would judge encyclopaedias and natural histories by their engravings of the tiger. When the Jungle Books were revealed to me I was upset that the tiger, Shere Khan, was the hero's enemy. As the years passed, this strange fascination never left me; it survived my paradoxical desire to become a hunter as it did all common human vicissitudes.”
“I did not sleep the night of 10 February. After a walk that led me far into the dawn, I passed through the gates of the mosque of Wazil Khan. It was the hour at which light has not yet revealed the colours of things. There was not a soul in the courtyard. Not knowing why, I plunged my hands into the water of the fountain of ablutions. Inside the mosque, it occurred to me that God and Allah are two names for a single, inconceivable Being, and I prayed aloud that I be freed from my burden. Unmoving, I awaited some reply.
I heard no steps, but a voice, quite close, spoke to me:
-I am here."
The other work that I want to show you is this children's book, a family heritage that I appreciate very much. It is from the year 1979, from the British encyclopedia and several illustrators participate in pages with a very philosophical and tender poetry. Over here other photos I took, now with the participation of my baby.
I chose this pair of books because they are contemporary in dates, and there are even similar illustrations. I hope you enjoy them! I love taking up this space and meeting with this reading community.

Me gustan los libros de gran formato que juegan con el diseño y la ilustración, honrando la pluma del autor o de la autora que dejó el alma en tinta. Durante un tiempo me dediqué a escarbar entre librerías de segunda mano y los montones apilados de libreros en la calles, a ver si daba con algún tesoro de papel, como el que muestro acá. El texto es del escritor Jorge Luis Borges, y es la primera edición del libro Rosa y Azul, del año 1977. El trabajo editorial de Sermay Ediciones es precioso, ¿o no? ;) . Acá algunas fotos que les tomé con mi teléfono.
El libro está compuesto por dos relatos, la Rosa de Paracelso y Tigres Azules. Las ilustraciones son de Alfredo González, un artista admirable. Mi relato favorito es Tigres Azules, juega con lo onírico, con la belleza del tigre como un "símbolo de terrible elegancia" y una serie de hechos que toman un curso inesperado. "Sé que me demoraba, de niño, ante cierta jaula del zoológico; nada me importaban las otras. Juzgaba a las enciclopedias y a los libros de historia natural por los grabados de los tigres. Cuando me fueron revelados los Jungle Books, me desagradó que Shere Khan, el tigre, fuera el enemigo del héroe. A lo largo del tiempo, ese curioso amor no me abandonó. Sobrevivió a mi paradójica voluntad de ser cazador y a las comunes vicisitudes humanas."
"No dormí la noche del 10 de febrero. Al cabo de una caminata que me llevó hasta el alba, traspuse los portales de la mezquita Wazil Khan. Era la hora en que la luz no ha revelado los colores. No había un alma en el patio. Sin saber por qué, hundí las manos en el agua de la cisterna. Ya en el recinto, pensé que Dios y Alá son dos nombres de un ser inconcebible, y le pedí en voz alta que me librara de mi carga. Inmóvil, aguardé una contestación.
No oí los pasos, pero una voz cercana me dijo:
—He venido.”
La otra obra que quiero mostrarles es este librito infantil, una herencia familiar que aprecio mucho. Es del año 1979, de la enciclopedia británica y participan varios ilustradores e ilustradoras en páginas con una poesía muy filosófica y tierna. Por acá otras fotos que tomé, ahora con la participación de mi bebita.
A veces, los sueños están llenos de cosas que te asustan mientras duermes: fantasmas espeluznantes y bestias horribles que dan miedo ¡y luego saltan!. Cuando estás completamente despierto de nuevo, por supuesto que se van. ¡Aunque toma un poco de tiempo antes de que te sientas bien!
Escogí este par de libros porque son contemporáneos en fechas, e incluso hay ilustraciones parecidas. ¡Espero los disfruten! Me encanta retomar este espacio y encontrarme con esta comunidad lectora.
