Sinopsis/Synopsis
La edad de la inocencia fue escrita por Edith Wharton y fue publicada en 1920, primero como folletín y luego como libro. Sigue la historia de la alta sociedad neoyorquina de la década de 1870 y muestra una línea de antepasados que se remonta a los primeros pobladores. Sólo ellos determinan la vida social de la clase alta. Las reglas tradicionales dictan, sobre todo, a las jóvenes cómo deben comportarse, qué es apropiado y qué no. Son presentados a la sociedad a una edad temprana, se comprometen y se casan como corresponde, sin conocerse realmente. Su vida en el matrimonio también está determinada por estándares de respetabilidad, y la pareja masculina disfruta de mucha más libertad.
The Age of Innocence was written by Edith Wharton and published in 1920, first as a serial and then as a book. It follows the history of New York high society in the 1870s and shows a line of ancestors dating back to the first settlers. Only they determine the social life of the upper class. Traditional rules dictate, above all, how young women should behave, what is appropriate and what is not. They are introduced into society at an early age, become engaged and marry as expected, without really knowing each other. Their life in marriage is also determined by standards of respectability, and the male partner enjoys much more freedom.

Mi Opinión/My Opinion
La trama sigue la historia de Newland Archer y su dilema interno que oscila entre las convenciones sociales y sus sentimientos. Es un abogado de una familia aristócrata que se compromete con May Welland, una joven de la alta sociedad, pura e inocente, como debían ser las mujeres de aquella época. No obstante, cuando conoce a la prima de May, la condesa Ellen Olenska, que ha regresado a Nueva York después de un escandaloso divorcio que afecta su reputación, se siente atraído por su espíritu libre y luego se enamora. A medida que la relación entre ambos se desarrolla, Newland se encuentra dividido entre su compromiso matrimonial y su amor por otra mujer.
The plot follows the story of Newland Archer and his internal dilemma, torn between social conventions and his feelings. He is a lawyer from an aristocratic family who becomes engaged to May Welland, a young woman from high society, pure and innocent, as women of that era were expected to be. However, when he meets May's cousin, Countess Ellen Olenska, who has returned to New York after a scandalous divorce that affects her reputation, he is attracted to her free spirit and then falls in love. As the relationship between the two develops, Newland finds himself torn between his marriage commitment and his love for another woman.
La crítica social es lo primero que podemos ver entre las páginas de este intenso libro, destaca la hipocresía de aquella sociedad y la rigidez de las normas a las que todos son sometidos. Vemos como Newland, luego de conocer Ellen, comienza a cuestionar este mundo en el que ha nacido y en el que nunca ha pensado en serio. Las normas le parecen una prisión y para él ese quiebre que representa el dilema al que lo han sometido sus sentimientos y su deber. Actualmente pensaríamos que la solución es fácil: romper su compromiso con May y casarse con Ellen, pero en esa época y en esa sociedad no es tan fácil y no tiene pocas consecuencias el traicionar las costumbres y romper las reglas. Las consecuencias lo abruman, porque no sólo lo afectan a él, sino también a Ellen y May.
Social criticism is the first thing we see in the pages of this intense book, highlighting the hypocrisy of that society and the rigidity of the rules to which everyone is subjected. We see how Newland, after meeting Ellen, begins to question the world into which he was born and which he has never seriously thought about. The rules seem like a prison to him, and for him, this break represents the dilemma to which his feelings and his duty have subjected him. Today, we would think that the solution is easy: break off his engagement to May and marry Ellen, but in that era and in that society, it is not so easy, and betraying customs and breaking the rules has serious consequences. The consequences overwhelm him, because they affect not only him, but also Ellen and May.
Una de las cosas que más me gustó de esta novela es la profundidad de los personajes. Podemos ver y compadecer a Newland, el carácter endeble y triste de May con su excelencia de valores y a Ellen con su fortaleza y su indiscutible lucha por su independencia, que representa lo más importante para ella. En especial creo que este es el mejor logrado y el que más me fascina. Sus prejuicios, sus pecados y sus valores nos sumergen en la lucha interna de cada uno y nos conducen a la reflexión. Una historia ideal para discutirla en algún grupo de lectura y que siempre voy a recomendar.
One of the things I liked most about this novel is the depth of the characters. We can see and sympathize with Newland, May's weak and sad character with her excellent values, and Ellen with her strength and her unquestionable fight for her independence, which is the most important thing to her. In particular, I think this is the most successful and the one that fascinates me the most. Their prejudices, sins, and values immerse us in each character's internal struggle and lead us to reflect. This is an ideal history to discuss in a reading group, and one that I will always recommend.
