“The Monkey” is one of those stories that remain engraved in your head and are difficult to forget. It was one of the first I read by this author and I choose it as the best of all, for its ability to be “indelible”.

“The Monkey” is a short story by Stephen King, first published as a pamphlet in Gallery magazine in 1980. It was republished and published in the short story collection Skeleton Crew in 1985 in the United States and in the book “La niebla” in the countries of Hispanic literature. It was in this book that I read it, accompanied by another story called “Mrs. Todd's shortcut”.
“El mono” es un relato corto de Stephen King, publicado por primera vez en como folleto en la revista Gallery en 1980. Fue reeditado y publicado en la colección de cuentos Skeleton Crew de 1985 en Estados Unidos y en el libro “La niebla” en los países de literatura hispana. En este libro fue donde yo lo leí, venía acompañado por otro relato llamado “El atajo de la señora Todd”.
My opinion/Mi opinión
This horror story is super gripping and is one I always remember, as it explores terror through the thoughts of a child and his father. The terror of a child, that feeling of insecurity and vulnerability, makes one “want to help him”. The feeling of protectiveness is awakened in the readers, or at least it happened to me. I found it interesting, even though cursed objects are a cliché of the genre, this one however has something disconcerting and several unexpected twists.
Este cuento de terror es super atrapante y es uno de los que siempre recuerdo, ya que explora el terror mediante el pensamiento de un niño y su padre. El terror de un niño, esa sensación de inseguridad y vulnerabilidad, hace que uno “quiera ayudarlo”. El sentimiento de protección se despierta en los lectores, o al menos a mí me pasó. Me pareció interesante, a pesar de los objetos malditos son un cliché del género, este sin embargo tiene algo que desconcierta y varios giros inesperados.
The story begins when Petey finds a wind-up toy monkey while rummaging through the attic of his father's childhood home. He sees it and is petrified, the monkey transports him back to his childhood and eerie memories. The toy brings death and misfortune, and Hal, the father, begins to fear for his family's safety. Father and son embark on a long journey down memory lane and the need to get rid of the monkey before it causes irreparable misfortune.
El relato comienza cuando Petey encuentra un mono de juguete a cuerda al rebuscar en el ático de la casa de la infancia de su padre. Este lo ve y queda petrificado, el mono lo transporta a su infancia y a recuerdos espeluznantes. El juguete trae muerte y desgracia, y Hal, el padre, empieza a temer por la seguridad de su familia. Padre e hijo emprenden un largo recorrido por la memoria y por la necesidad de deshacerse del mono antes que provoque alguna irreparable desgracia.
I won't tell you more about it so as not to make any more spoilers. I recommend it, you will not regret reading this classic tale of horror literature, in which King is one of the best.
