This is a theme that has given rise to many great stories in literature and is considered a plot in its own right: the idea of making pacts or wishing for something, especially from supernatural entities, along with its consequences (both good and bad). While it might be seen as an "overused" trope, in The October Tale, we saw Neil Gaiman give it a simple yet interesting twist. Because in literature, my friends, nothing is so worn out that it can't be revived. Here, we have several options. In this entry, we’ll analyze two of the most common ones. So, let’s get started.
Deals with the Devil or Faustian Pacts
This became especially popular in Christianized Western Europe, where belief in witchcraft and other shady dealings of that sort was widespread. While the idea of asking a supernatural entity for a favor in exchange for something has existed since religion was invented, it hasn’t always been viewed so negatively. There’s the Eastern tale of Prince Zohak, originating from Persian myth and included in the national epic Shâhnameh or Book of Kings (around 1000 AD). The demon Iblis tempts the prince with the promise of raising him higher than the sun and granting him power… in exchange for killing his father, a crime he commits without hesitation.
Even the New Testament depicts the Devil tempting Jesus Christ. So, this concept goes way back, though the widespread belief that gaining power this way is strictly negative—and comes with a lifelong price, like dooming one’s soul to eternal suffering—is more of a Christian doctrine. As early as the 6th century, the Greek version of the Legend of Theophilus of Adana tells a Faustian Pact story.
The idea evolved into what we know today: a person would summon a demon or be surprised and tempted by one. They would be granted their heart’s deepest desire in exchange for carrying out acts that would damn their soul forever. This could even extend to sacrificing children or consecrating them at birth. They were also expected to participate in witches' sabbaths, often with a strong sexual component (especially if the pact-maker was a woman). Orgies and other "indecencies," sexual relations with demons, and conceiving offspring with succubi and incubi were anticipated. Personally, I’d call that feverish fantasies, but who are we to judge?
The pact could be oral or written. The oral version involved invocations, spells, or rituals—the best way to leave no evidence. Still, the Inquisition found a way to "prove" it: if you had a freckle, mole, or mark anywhere on your body, well, that was it—straight to the stake. Supposedly, the Devil had kissed you there to seal the deal. What a kisser, that Satan. The written pact would summon the demon in the same way but included a contract signed in blood, though ultimately, they claimed that simply writing one’s name in a certain Red Book of Satan was enough.
Religious literature features cases of monks or saints powerful enough to "save" the souls of repentant pact-makers, offering hope and showcasing God’s endless mercy (the same mercy His followers rarely displayed). Secular literature, on the other hand, focuses on the tug-of-war between the Devil and the pact-maker who tries to outwit him—or, more directly, on the inevitability of punishment. The best stories, in my opinion, are the "be careful what you wish for" tales, where the pact-maker not only loses their soul in the end but also finds that their wish itself carries the punishment. But we’ll discuss that shortly.
Djinn or Ifrits (The Famous Genies, Basically)
Who doesn’t know this story? You rub a lamp, a genie pops out, and grants you three wishes. Very Disney—except that’s probably the most boring version of something far more fascinating.
Genies—djinn, jinn, or even efrits/ifrits—are spirits from pre-Islamic Arabian mythology. They are a race of supernatural beings with extraordinary powers, including the ability to grant mortals any wish. They were later incorporated into Islamic theology, sometimes interpreted as minor gods or spirits from other religions. Some sources differentiate between djinn and ifrits based on their nature: ifrits are "worse"—more rebellious, uglier, and less inclined to obey humans. There’s also a distinction based on their elemental nature: djinn are beings of "water," "wind," or "earth," each with their own traits, while ifrits are "fire" beings—unpredictable, capable of being useful or destructive.
The most widespread story on this subject can be found in Arabian Nights: at some point, these genies rebelled against Allah’s power, and their punishment was enslavement. Sulayman ibn Daud (the famous King Solomon) trapped them inside small containers—lamps, jars—sealed with an unbreakable spell from within or by other djinn. He then ordered these thousands of vessels to be thrown into the sea and rivers. If a human is lucky (or unlucky) enough to find one of these containers and breaks the seal, one of two things can happen:
They might find an enslaved djinn, willing to do its job—granting the human whatever they desire as long as they own the vessel.
Or, they might encounter a less benevolent djinn or an ifrit, who will twist their wishes into something terrible. Real stand-up guys, these ifrits.
Oh, and important note: there’s no limit to wishes. You can ask for whatever you want. Another human—maybe your worst enemy—could steal the vessel and order your destruction, and the genie would do it, because its loyalty isn’t to a specific human but to the vessel itself. I highly recommend reading the original Aladdin story because that one actually makes you wish you had a genie.
Stories & Inspirations
This is my favorite part. When it comes to deals with the Devil, Faust takes the cake. But there are other stories worth mentioning. I’ll start with one of my all-time favorite tales, in any genre or era: Stevenson’s The Bottle Imp. It’s a masterpiece. For classic horror, there’s Sir Dominick’s Bargain by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Young Goodman Brown is also excellent. More modern? A Pact with the Devil by Juan José Arreola. For sci-fi, there’s Asimov’s The Three-Dimensional Trap. And novels? Well, who hasn’t heard of The Master and Margarita? If you haven’t read it, now’s the time. And of course, any comic fan knows Ghost Rider. There are surely more—I welcome suggestions—but I’m working off memory, and only the most striking ones stick. This author also got to watch Three Thousand Years of Longing. Highly recommended. Indirect Pacts
Sometimes, the Devil doesn’t appear in person, in all his pomp and circumstance, but in a more "modest" (and sometimes more annoying) form. In other words: wishes can go horribly wrong, or you might stumble into an anthill without realizing it. In that vein, I’d recommend The Venus of Ille by Prosper Mérimée and The Monkey’s Paw by W.W. Jacobs. There are a thousand ways to approach this theme—a thousand angles. You just have to know how to use them.
On Djinn & Ifrits
People, you need to read the original Aladdin. It’s one of those marvels that, once finished, forces you to stop reading, close your eyes, and wrestle with the overdose of imagination it gifts you. I never tire of it. We’ve mentioned Neil Gaiman, but in American Gods (one of his most famous novels), a genie also appears (I suspect an ifrit). And in The Sandman, the protagonist often plays the role of a wish-granting entity. Now, if you’re Cuban or have brushed against socialist literature, you’ve probably heard of El viejo djin Jottábich—a hilarious soviet story.
Oddly, right now, I recall more TV or film references than literary ones. For example, X-Files has a great episode with a nasty genie, and I’m very sure Supernatural must’ve featured one (because, come on, what didn’t appear in Supernatural?). But I can’t remember many others. Hmm. Interesting.
Anyway—suggestions welcome!
Se trata de una temática que ha dado pie a historias muy buenas en la literatura, y se considera un argumento por sí mismo: el asunto de pactar o pedir deseos, especialmente a entidades sobrenaturales, con sus consecuencias (buenas y malas). Si bien es un tema que podría considerarse «gastado», en el Cuento de Octubre vimos a Neil Gaiman dándole un giro simple pero interesante. Y es que en la literatura, mis amigos, nada está demasiado usado como para no poderse rescatar. Acá tenemos varias opciones. En esta entrada analizaremos dos, las más usadas. Así que, vamos allá.
Los Pactos con el Diablo o Pactos Fáusticos
Esto se puso muy de moda especialmente en la Europa Occidental ya cristiana, que creía en la brujería y otros negocios turbios de ese tipo. Si bien la idea de pedir un favor a una entidad a cambio de algo ha estado presente desde que se inventó la religión, no siempre ha sido visto tan negativamente. Existe la historia oriental del príncipe Zohac, surgida de la tradición mítica de Persia e incluida en la epopeya nacional del Shâhnameh o Libro de los reyes (hacia 1000 d.n.e.). El demonio Iblis seduce al príncipe con la promesa de que lo elevará más alto que el sol y le otorgará su poder… a cambio de que mate a su padre, crimen que no duda en consumar.
El mismísimo Nuevo Testamento presenta al Diablo tentando a Jesucristo. O sea que la cosa viene de atrás, aunque el pensamiento generalizado de que obtener recursos de esta manera es estrictamente negativo y se paga un precio de por vida, como condenar el alma al sufrimiento eterno etc, es mas bien cosa de la doctrina cristiana. Ya en el siglo VI, la versión griega de la historia de Teófilo de Adana cuenta una historia de Pacto Faústico.
La idea fue evolucionando hasta convertirse en lo que conocemos hoy: la persona convocaba a algún demonio, o era sorprendida y tentada por este. Se le concedía lo que más deseaba su corazón, y a cambio llevaba a cabo una serie de actos que condenarían su alma para siempre. Podría llegar hasta sacrificarle niños o consagrárselos al nacer. También se suponía que participaría en aquelarres y todo tendría un componente sexual (en especial, si el que hacía el pacto era mujer). Se esperaban orgías y otras «indecencias», relaciones sexuales con demonios y concebir descendencia con los súcubos e íncubos. Yo a eso le digo fantasías de mente calenturienta, pero quiénes somos para juzgar.
El pacto puede ser oral o escrito. El oral se realiza mediante invocaciones, conjuros o rituales, es la mejor manera de que no quede evidencia. De cualquier manera, la inquisición encontró una manera de demostrarlo: si usted tenía una peca, lunar o mancha en algún sitio, pues listo, a la candela. Se suponía que el Diablo lo había besado allí para cerrar el trato. Qué besucón el Satanás. El pacto escrito atraería al demonio de la misma manera pero incluiría un contrato firmado con sangre, aunque en último término afirmaban que bastaba con haber incluido el propio nombre en un cierto Libro Rojo de Satán.
La literatura religiosa presenta casos de monjes o santos lo suficientemente poderosos como para «salvar» el alma de los pactarios arrepentidos, lo cual da una esperanza y evidencia la eterna misericordia de Dios (esa misma que sus seguidores rara vez manifestaban). La literatura profana, por otro lado, se enfoca en el «tira y jala» entre el Diablo y el pactario que piensa ganarle a base de ingenio, o ya directamente en la inevitabilidad del castigo. Las mejores historias, en mi criterio, son las de «cuidado con lo que deseas», donde el pactario no solo pierde el alma al final, sino que el deseo trae implícito el castigo. Pero de eso hablaremos en breve.
Djins o ifrits (los famosos genios, vamos)
Quién no conoce esta historia: una lámpara que se frota, sale un genio y te condece tres deseos. Muy Disney todo, excepto porque probablemente esa sea la versión más aburrida de algo que es mucho más interesante.
Los genios, djinn o jinn, incluso efrits o ifrits son espíritus de la mitología árabe preislámica. Se trata de un pueblo de criaturas sobrenaturales con poderes extraordinarios, entre los cuales se incluye el conceder cualquier deseo a los mortales. Fueron adaptados dentro de la teología musulmana, a veces como interpretación de los dioses menores o espíritus de otras religiones. En algunas fuentes he encontrado una diferenciación entre djinn e ifrits basada en su naturaleza: los ifrits son más «malos», más rebeldes, más feos y menos dados a obedecer a la gente. También, basada en el elemento que predomina en ellos: los djinn son seres «de agua», «de viento» o «de tierra», cada uno con sus características, mientras que los ifrits son seres «de fuego» y, como tal, lo mismo pueden ser útiles que destructivos pero, en cualquier caso, imprevisibles.
La historia más generalizada sobnre este tema se puede leer en Las Mil y Una Noches: en algún momento, estos genios se rebelaron contra el poder de Allah y su castigo fue ser esclavizados. Soleimán ben Daud (el famoso rey Salomón) los encerró en espacios pequeños como lámparas y botijas, que selló con un conjuro irrompible desde dentro o por otros genios. Luego mandó a echar estas miles de vasijas al mar y los ríos. Si un humano tiene la suerte (a veces, desgracia) de toparse uno de estos recipientes y abre el sello, le pueden pasar dos cosas. La primera, encontrarse a un esclavo djinn dispuesto a cumplir con su trabajo, o sea, concederle al ser humano todo lo que pida mientras sea propietario de la vasija. La segunda, encontrarse a un djinn menos benévolo o a un ifrit, que haría lo mismo, pero utilizando los deseos para revertirlos y convertirlos en cosas malas. Gente chévere como no hay otra, los ifrits estos.
Ah, importante: no hay límite en los deseos. Usted puede pedir lo que le dé la real gana. Otro humano, su gran enemigo, puede robar la vasija y pedir que lo destruya y el genio lo hará, porque su fidelidad no es hacia un humano específico, sino hacia la vasija que lo contiene. Yo les recomiendo de corazón que se lean la historia original de Aladino porque esa sí da deseos de tener un genio.
Historias e inspiraciones
Esta es la parte que más me gusta. Supongo que en materia de pactos con el diablo, se lleva la palma el Fausto. Pero hay otras historias que vale la pena tener en cuenta. Comienzo con uno de mis cuentos favoritos, en cualquier género y de cualquier época: el inigualable «El diablo en la botella«, de Stevenson. Es una maravilla de cuento. También, de terror clásico, «El convenio de Sir Dominick«, de Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. También es muy bueno «El joven Goodman Brown«, de Nathaniel Hawthorne. Más moderno es «Un pacto con el diablo«, de Juan José Arreola.
Llevado a la Ciencia Ficción, tenemos a Isaac Asimov con «El artilugio tridimensional«. En materia de novelas, vamos, ¿quién no ha oído hablar de «El Maestro y Margarita«? Si no la han leído, este es el momento. Y bueno, quién que guste del cómic no conoce la historia del Ghost Rider. Tienen que haber más, y yo acepto encantada las sugerencias. Pero estas entradas las redacto con la ayuda de mi pobre memoria, y en ella se quedan solo las cosas más impactantes. La autora también pudo ver la película Three Thousand Years of Longing. Muy recomendable. Si alguien tiene el libro original de A.S. Byatt que me lo haga llegar, por favor.
Aquí supongo que debemos empezar a hablar de pactos indirectos. A veces, no se te aparece el Diablo en persona, con toda pompa y platillo, sino alguna versión un poco más «modesta» (y a veces más jodedora). En otras palabras: los deseos pueden salir muy mal, o uno puede meterse en un hormiguero sin saber lo que está haciendo. En ese sentido, recuerdo «La Venus de Ille«, de Prosper Mérimée y «La pata del mono«, de W.W. Jacobs. Nada, hay mil maneras de tratar este tema, mil puntos de vista. Solo hay que saber usarlos.
Sobre djinns y efrits, señores, hay que leerse Aladino, el original. Este cuento es una de esas maravillas que al terminarlo hay que parar de leer, cerrar los ojos y luchar a favor o en contra de la sobredosis de imaginación que nos regala. Yo no me canso de leerlo. Ya vimos a Neil Gaiman, pero en American Gods, una de sus novelas más famosas, también aparece un genio (sospecho que es un ifrit). De hecho, en su comic más famoso, The Sandman, en más de una ocasión el protagonista hace de entidad que concede deseos o con la que se pacta. Ahora bien, si usted es cubano o tuvo algún roce con la literatura del campo socialista, es muy probable que haya oído hablar de «El viejo djin Jottábich«, una historia soviética divertidísima.
Curiosamente, ahora mismo recuerdo más referencias televisivas o ciematográficas de este tema, que literarias. Por ejemplo, en Expedientes X hay un capítulo muy bueno con una genio muy jodida, y estoy muy segura de que en Supernatural tiene que haber salido alguno (porque, a ver, ¿qué no salió en Supernatural?). Pero no recuerdo muchas más. Jummm. Curioso.
