"Utopia" is a concept attributed to Sir Thomas More, a British humanist and chancellor who was martyred by king Henry VIII for shady reasons. In 1516, he published a book of the same name in which he describes a model for an ideal society with minimal levels of crime, violence, and poverty. By examining the etymology (from two Greek words "ou," meaning no, and "topos," meaning place, thus, "a place that does not exist"), it is already evident that things are looking quite bleak.
An utopia is simply an ideal society and, as such, it needs to have an absolute opposite. That is a dystopia: a utopia to which the prefix "dis-," denoting opposition or negation, is added. In other words, it is a negative society. In simpler terms: utopia is an impossible aspiration to achieve, and dystopia is a possibility that should be avoided. The fact that throughout our history as a species we have always seemed to be closer to the latter than the former is also troubling, but it's a matter of perception more than anything else.
The idea of utopia has fascinated philosophers, writers, and thinkers throughout time. From profound reflections on human nature to imaginative narratives in Science Fiction, utopia is presented as an unattainable concept. But, is it really possible to achieve such a state? What sacrifices would we have to make? To what extent can tolerance withstand a perfect society? Can it continue to exist without defending itself?
Let's start with the first point worth analyzing: Most dystopias are sold as utopian societies.
Just like in real societies, dystopias are presented and promoted as the best possible world for an "us" that fits certain characteristics, requiring the sacrifice or defense against a "them" that doesn't fit the vision. Here lies the first condition: not everyone deserves utopia.
Let's assume we have a real utopia, where are those "theys"? What price had to be paid, who paid it? The story of "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" (Ursula K. LeGuin) is the best expression of this fundamental conflict. Every utopia always carries an implicit dystopia, whether it's the aforementioned scenario or when that specific utopia corrupts in practice. If dystopias are corrupted utopias, couldn't it be that a utopia is a dystopia that succeeded?
Now, let's suppose not. The utopia wasn't built on the backs of the innocent. Society somehow, through sheer miracle, knowing our nature and diversity, achieved a state of unity in thought and action and decided, at least mostly, to build the perfect society.
This brings us to the second significant issue: What is perfect for some may not be for others.
Meaning: dissent is inevitable. It could be assumed that all citizens accept and support the common vision (why oppose perfection?). However, the reality is that not everyone will agree with the proposed model. Those who dissent often face severe consequences. In many utopian narratives, the dissident becomes the scapegoat for the community, forced to live underground or face retaliation. This aspect of utopia invites reflection: can there truly be a perfect society if diversity of thought is suppressed?
This tension between the desire to create an ideal society and the risk of falling into tyranny raises a significant ethical dilemma. Can we truly build a utopia without sacrificing individual freedom? The so-called "paradox of tolerance," for example, warns us of the dangers of a society that, in the name of tolerance and freedom, accepts within itself tendencies that seek to destroy it. In short: unlimited freedom is a problem.
In conclusion, I do not believe in utopias. I don't feel capable of writing one, as I invariably find flaws in the ones I read, and I can't see myself writing one that isn't flawed. Perhaps it's my own limitation. Perhaps, as the name itself indicates, it's simply impossible.

Utopía es un concepto que se le atribuye al Sir. Thomas More, humanista y canciller británico que fue martirizado por Enrique VIII por razones bastante turbias. En 1516, publicó un libro de ese nombre en el cual describe un modelo para una sociedad ideal con niveles mínimos de crimen, violencia y pobreza. Desde que examinamos la etimología (a partir de dos palabras griegas «ou», que significa no, y «topos», que significa lugar, o sea, «lugar que no existe»), ya es evidente que la cosa pinta bastante mal.
Una utopía es simplemente una sociedad ideal y, como tal, necesita tener un opuesto absoluto. Y eso es una distopía: una utopía a la que se le agrega el prefijo dis-, que denota oposición o negación. O sea, es una sociedad negativa. Dicho de otra manera: la utopía es un anhelo imposible de conseguir y la distopía, una posibilidad cuya concreción se debería evitar. El hecho de que a lo largo de nuestra historia como especie siempre hayamos parecido estar más cerca de la segunda que de la primera, también pinta mal, pero es un asunto de percepción, más que nada.
La idea de utopía ha fascinado a filósofos, escritores y pensadores a través del tiempo. Desde las reflexiones más profundas sobre la naturaleza humana hasta las narrativas más imaginativas en la Ciencia Ficción, la utopía se presenta como un concepto inalcanzable. Pero, ¿realmente es posible alcanzar un estado así? ¿Qué sacrificios tendríamos que hacer? ¿Hasta qué punto puede soportar la tolerancia una sociedad perfecta? ¿Puede seguir existiendo sin defenderse a sí misma?
Partamos del primer punto digno de ser analizado: La mayoría de las distopías se venden como sociedades utópicas.
Como sucede en las sociedades reales, las distopías se presentan y se promocionan como el mejor de los mundos posibles para un «nosotros» que cumple con ciertas características, para lo cual es necesario sacrificar a, o defenderla de, un «ellos» que no encaja con la visión. Y allí se presenta la primera condición: no todos merecen la utopía.
Supongamos que tenemos una utopía real, ¿dónde están esos «ellos»? ¿Qué precio hubo que pagar, quién lo pagó? El cuento Los que se van de Omelas es la mejor expresión de este conflicto base. Toda utopía siempre conlleva una distopía implícita, ya sea lo anteriormente mencionado o la que surge cuando esa utopía específica se corrompe en la práctica. Si las distopías son utopías corrompidas, ¿no podría ser que una utopía sea una distopía que logró triunfar?
Ahora, supongamos que no. La utopía no se construyó sobre la espalda de los inocentes. La sociedad logró, de puro milagro, conociendo nuestra naturaleza y diversidad, un estado de unidad de pensamiento y acción y decidió, al menos mayoritariamente, construir la sociedad perfecta.
Surge entonces la segunda gran cuestión: Lo que es perfecto para unos, puede no serlo para otros.
O sea: el disenso es inevitable. Se podría suponer que todos los ciudadanos aceptan y apoyan la visión común (¿para qué oponerse a la perfección?). Sin embargo, la realidad es que no todos estarán de acuerdo con el modelo propuesto. Aquellos que disienten a menudo enfrentan consecuencias severas. En muchas narrativas utópicas, el disidente se convierte en el chivo expiatorio de la comunidad, forzado a vivir en la clandestinidad o a enfrentarse a represalias. Este aspecto de la utopía invita a la reflexión: ¿puede existir verdaderamente una sociedad perfecta si la diversidad de pensamiento es reprimida?
Esta tensión entre el deseo de crear una sociedad ideal y el riesgo de caer en la tiranía plantea un dilema ético significativo. ¿Podemos realmente construir una utopía sin sacrificar la libertad individual? La llamada «paradoja de la tolerancia», por ejemplo, nos advierte de los peligros de una sociedad que, en nombre de la tolerancia y la libertad, acepte en su seno a las tendencias que abogan por destruirla. En pocas palabras: la libertad sin límites es un problema.
En conclusión, yo no creo en utopías. No me siento capaz de escribir una, porque invariablemente acabo encontrándole el defecto a las que leo, y no me veo escribiendo una que no sea así. Quizás es incapacidad mía. Quizás es que, como el propio nombre lo indica, es simplemente imposible.
