Hi reader friends of this community. Hard days here! It is summer, we are on vacations, but the weather with its high temperatures and a difficult situation with the water distribution are making people go bananas. I am not out of this scenery, (and electricity is the elephant in the room). But as someone taught us once, having a book is like having a good friend.
I kept reading my book and going deeper into the stories. I am impressed with all the background the characters have behind! Those pages give us more details of the stories at the beginning of the book, and we can understand it better. That makes easier to get what happened before and why.
Lee Sun, for example tells about the horrible travel he made from China in a ship to Victoria to meet his uncle. He used to be in the rice farms and he had never been in the water before, that is why he was sick all the time. During the travel, I suppose he was drugged (taking into account the descriptions he makes of himself). When he arrived, he knows that his uncle passed away and there is no body, because he died in a storm while sailing. Someone that met his uncle give to him food, and a place to sleep, but early in the morning he goes away and take new decisions that will redirect him to the whaling station. That moment was difficult too for him.
Leo Slaney is caring his bees and his hives. He is also a honey productor. He is telling about his memories and Norah in the next pages too. Both are telling their point of view of their marriage, the death of their son Teddy, their childhood memories and how it used to be years before. Teddy was two when he was sick. He had bronchitis first, and then tuberculosis. He went getting worst each day until he died with four. Leo was not supporting Norah during that process because he was at work far from them and Norah do not forget his absence.
Isobel is Norah and Leo's daughter. He has a brief story of her talking with her sister that had an adventure playing in the tongue of a giant whale with some other kids. Her sister is excited about what he did and showed her emotion to her, but she does not react like her. She dissimulated her interest to not disappoint the little girl, that made her promise that she won't tell to their parents. He was dreaming with Kenji and their first kiss the previous summer and I had the full story of the Japanese and the fight he had with a drunk colleague and how he killed him in self defense.
I am loving the book and enjoying each letter of it. I am not in the part when all the stories go together in only one yet. This is a book in which every detail is important and necessary to get what goes happening because you need to know the past to understand the current period.
I hope that you have enjoyed my post and may follow my publications to know more about the book. And if you find it everywhere, buy it, you won't regret, trust me!
With love: Vicky ❤️
