If I were to say that in my opinion it is Stephen King's best work, I would run the risk of making a mistake. And I would probably receive a lot of criticism with adverse opinions.
The bibliography, the complete work of Stephen King is so vast, so associated with the world of cinema when even special effects in the so-called seventh art were not nearly what they are now, that it is difficult to say which is his masterpiece.
However, and this I dare say, Cell is on the podium of the novels of the so-called "King of Suspense" or the "King of Horror" as others prefer to call him.
But more than anything else, this novel is premonitory because it was published in 2006 - it seems such a long time ago and yet it is a little more than a decade away - when mobile phones were just beginning to gain a foothold in the market, far removed from the extraordinary features they have today.
A curious and at the same time amusing fact is that in the printed edition of the book Stephen Edwin King (that is his real name) clarifies that he does not own a mobile phone.
The beginning of the book is as ironic as it is brilliant, which makes us think of a different King novel, simpler and more contemporary in its plot, but no less terrifying for that.
Says the author:
"On the first day of October, God was in his sky, the stock index was at 10,140, and most planes were on time (except those landing or taking off from Chicago, which was to be expected). Two weeks later, the sky was back to the birds and the stock market was a memory."
A mysterious electronic signal, later to be called "The Pulse" is sent through all cellular networks to users all over the world.
The objective is as simple as it is terrible: to annul people's reasoning, to transform them into a kind of violent zombies returned to the most primitive condition of the human being, to an animal state, conserving only the primordial instincts of the species.
Some survivors manage to escape the control of the so-called "tele-crazies" or "cellulates", reorganising themselves and trying to resist the barbarity, trying to avoid receiving the devastating telephone signal.
Civilisation is heading into a new dark age that even the most pessimistic futurists could not have calculated. As if none could escape such barbarism.
The plot revolves around Clayton "Clay" Riddell who is a cartoonist from Maine (virtually all of King's novels are set in the US where he lives).
One day while he is on his way to the publishing house to sign the contract for the publication of his first book called "The Dark Walker", which will allow him - among other things - to help his family financially, he sees something that astonishes him.
The people who walk near him as soon as they receive a call on their mobile phones behave like hallucinated zombies, attacking each other and losing all ability to reason, transforming themselves into ferocious beasts that attack and kill their fellows in their eagerness to prevail over each other.
Chaos grips the entire universe. Uncontrolled planes, unguided by their pilots, crash into nearby buildings, trains derail, cars overturn, crash into each other and fall off bridges.
It seems as if a state of feverish madness has taken over the whole world.
In his eagerness to survive and try to understand the cause(s) that are causing such a disaster Clayton helps those he can and barricades himself inside a hotel to save himself from the maddened horde that intends to lynch him.
On the run, he and his friends who have managed to avoid the influence of The Pulse find weapons and begin their fight.
The zombies who have begun to develop telepathic abilities group themselves into "herds" and perform ceremonial executions when they capture any unconverted survivors. Clayton and his friends decide that the only way to save themselves is to eliminate them, and so begins an all-out war.
The main herd is led by the so-called "Raggedy Man" who finally captures Clayton and prepares him for the morning execution.
As he contemplates suicide having failed in his attempt to blow up a bus full of dynamite in the middle of the herd, Clayton is rescued by his friends who have survived and blown up the bus.
As they drive away amidst the inert zombies, the group heads for the Canadian border in the hope that the harsh winter will wipe out the remaining zombies.
The idea is to create a corrupt code for The Pulse to slowly destroy itself so that it can rebuild its son's life.
Si dijera que a mi criterio es la mejor obra de Stephen King correría el riesgo de cometer un error. Y probablemente recibiría muchas cr1ticas con opiniones adversas.
Es que la bibliografía, la obra completa de Stephen King es tan vasta, está tan asociada al mundo del cine cuando incluso los efectos especiales en el llamado séptimo arte no eran, ni por sueño, lo que son ahora, que es difícil decir cuál es su obra maestra.
Sin embargo y, esto sí me atrevo a decirlo, Cell está en el podio de las novelas del llamado justamente el "Rey del Suspenso" o el "Rey del Terror" como prefieren llamarlo otros.
Pero además de todo esta novela es premonitoria porque fue publicada en el año 2006 -parece un año tan lejano y sin embargo nos separa poco más de una década- cuando los celulares recién comenzaban a imponerse en el mercado, muy lejos de las extraordinarias prestaciones que tienen en la actualidad.
Un dato curioso y risueño a la vez es que en la edición impresa del libro Stephen Edwin King (tal es su verdadero nombre) aclara que él no posee un celular.
El inicio del libro es tan irónico como genial, lo que nos hace pensar en una novela distinta de King, más simple y actual en su trama, pero no por eso menos aterradora.
Dice el autor:
"El primer día de octubre, Dios estaba en su cielo, el índice bursátil estaba en 10.140, y la mayoría de los aviones eran puntuales (excepto los que aterrizaban o despegaban de Chicago, lo que era de esperar). Dos semanas después, el cielo volvía a ser de los pájaros y la bolsa era un recuerdo."
Una misteriosa señal electrónica, que después se llamaría El Pulso" es enviada a través de todas las redes celulares a los usuarios de todo el mundo.
El objetivo es tan simple como terrible: anular el raciocinio de las personas, transformarlos en una especie de zombies viovientes regresados a la condición más primaria del ser humano, a un estado animal, conservando solo los instintos primordiales de la especie.
Algunos sobrevivientes logran escapar al control de los llamados "tele-locos" o "celulados", reorganizándose y tratando de resistir a la barbarie, tratando de evitar recibir la devastadora señal telefónica.
La civilización se está dirigiendo a una nueva era de oscuridad que ni siquiera los futurógos más pesimistas podhaber calculado. Como si ninguno pudiera escapar a tanta barbarie.
La trama gira en torno a Clayton "Clay" Riddell que es un dibujador de historietas de Maine (prácticamente todas las novelas de King estén habituadas en el lugar de los EE. UU. donde vive).
Un dia mientras se dirige a la editorial para firmar el contrato para la publicación de su primer libro llamado "El Caminante Oscuro" que le permitirá -entre otras cosas- poder ayudar económicamenete a su famila ve algo que lo deja estupefacto.
Las personas que caminan cerca de él apenas reciben una llamada al celular se comportan como zombies alucinados, se atacan entre ellos y pierden toda capacidad de razonar, tranformándose en bestias feroces que atacan a matan a sus semejantes en el afán de prevalecer unos sobre otros.
El caos se apodera de todo el universo. Los aviones descontrolados, sin la guia de sus pilotos se caen y/o se estrellan contra los edificios cercanos, los trenes descarrilan, los autos vuelcan, chocan entre si y caen de los puentes.
Pareciera como si un estado de locura febril se hubiera apoderado del mundo entero.
En su afán por sobrevivir y tratar de entender las/s causa/s que están originando tal desastre Clayton ayuda a los que puede y se barricad dentro de un hotel para salvarse de la horda enloquecida que pretende lincharlo.
En su huída y sus amigos que han logrado evitar la influencia de El Pulso encuentran armas e inician su lucha.
Los zombies que han comenzado a desarrollar capacidad telepáticas se agrupan en "rebaños" y efectúan ejecuciones ceremoniales cuando capturan a algún sobreviviente no convertido. Clayton y sus amigos deciden que la única forma de salvarse es eliminarlos y de esa manera comienza una guerra sin cuartel.
El principal rebaño está conducido por el llamado "Hombre Andrajoso" que finalmente captura a Clayton y lo prepara para la ejecución matutina.
Mientras piensa en suicidarse al haber fracasado en su intento de hacer omnibus de hacer explotar un omnibus lleno de dinamita en medio del rebaño, Clayton es rescatado por sus amigos que han sobrevivido y han hecho explotar el omnibus.
Mientras se alejan en medio de los zombies inertes el grupo de dirige a la frontera con Canadá esperando que el duro invierno acabe con los zombies restantes.
La idea es crear un código corrupto para que El Pulso se vaya de a poco destruyendo y eso le permita reconstruir la vida de su hijo.
Cell is undoubtedly a masterpiece of modern literature, where fantasy and reflection on the false myths of our time give life to a terrifyingly plausible and highly topical story: the overwhelming power of mobile phones and their influence on our lives.

Podemos definir sin lugar a dudas a Cell como una obra maestra de la literatura moderna, donde la fantasía y la reflexión sobre los falsos mitos de nuestro tiempo dan vida a una historia terroríficamente verosímil y muy actual: el poder abrumador de los teléfonos móviles y su influencia en nuestras vidas.
