Hello, dear book lovers
Lately, I have not been reading as much as I would like to. Maybe because I'm still rearranging the agenda of interests in which I will devote valuable attention. Although being honest, I think all my life I've been at it. Always trying to optimize the most crucial resource based on the inevitable constraint: the passing of time.
Nevertheless, today I want to share with you my comments on a famous novel, The Old Man and the Sea (1952) by Ernest Hemingway, and made into a movie at least twice. The first starring Spencer Tracy in 1958, and the other starring Anthony Quinn in 1990. Of which I think I have seen, without much emotion, some scenes of both films when I was still a teenager.
In my library, there are two versions of it in Spanish, one edited by the newspaper El Nacional in 2000, translated by Lino Novas Calvo, and the other, by the publishing house Seis Barral, in 1985. Of course, I also have digital versions of the work.
On this occasion, I chose to read the Seix Barral one, because of the interior charcoal illustrations that accompany it, which I show you here. Although I searched the book's credits for the illustrator, I was unsuccessful. Apparently, at that time, they did not usually give recognition in these collections.

Perhaps, since it is a classic, you already know what it is about. In any case, the novel is short: 150 pages at the most (depending on the version), and it tells a story that unfolds at sea. An old Havana fisherman sets sail alone to hunt for a big fish after 84 days without catching any.
Unlike the fleeting memories and sensations I keep from the film adaptations. The reading was a delight. A third-person omniscient narrator, but limited, giving context and intertwined by the protagonist's internal dialogues and voiceover. Even being minimalist, subtle in symbolism, and introspective, it kept my attention, despite the apparent simplicity of the events, because of the poetic and profound tone that led me to meditate on dignity and perseverance in the face of adversity and potential defeat.
So, if you haven't read it, take heart as I did today. Sometimes a book can be resting, forgotten for decades in your library, until it's time to be enriched. They are considered contemporary classics for a reason. In this sense, in general, I urge you, as an example, to break with the immediacy of some social networks. Reading implies concentrating for a long time, a skill worth preserving, in addition to the delight you get from good literature.

Últimamente, no he leído tanto como quisiera. Quizás porque todavía reorganizo la agenda de intereses en que dedicaré la valiosa atención. Aunque siendo honesto, creo que toda mi vida he estado en ello. Siempre tratando de optimizar el recurso más crucial con base en la restricción inevitable: el transcurrir del tiempo.
No obstante, hoy quiero compartirle mis comentarios sobre una novela famosa El viejo y el mar (1952) de Ernest Hemingway, y llevada al cine, al menos, en dos oportunidades. La primera, protagonizada por Spencer Tracy en 1958, y la otra, por Anthony Quinn en 1990. De las cuales creo haber visto sin mucha emoción algunas escenas de ambas películas cuando aún era un adolescente.
En mi biblioteca reposan dos versiones de la misma en español, una editada por el diario El Nacional en el 2000, traducida por Lino Novas Calvo, y la otra, por la editorial Seis Barral, en 1985. Claro, también dispongo de versiones digitales de la obra.
En esta ocasión, me decanté por leer la de Seix Barral, por las ilustraciones interiores a carboncillo que la acompañan, y que les muestro aquí. Aunque busqué en los créditos del libro al ilustrador, fue infructuoso. Al parecer, en esa época no solían dar reconocimiento en estas colecciones.

Quizás, al tratarse de un clásico, ya conozcáis de lo que va el asunto. En todo caso, la novela es corta: unas 150 páginas a lo sumo (según la versión), cuenta una historia que se desenvuelve en el mar. Un viejo pescador habanero, zarpa en solitario a la caza de un gran pez luego de 84 días sin pescar ninguno.
A diferencia de los recuerdos fugaces y sensaciones que guardo de las adaptaciones cinematográficas. La lectura fue toda una delicia. Un narrador en tercera persona omnisciente, pero limitado, que da contexto y entrelazado por los diálogos internos y a viva voz del protagonista. Aun siendo minimalista, sutil en simbolismo e introspectivo, me mantuvo atento, a pesar de la aparente sencillez de los sucesos, por el tono poético y profundo que te llevan a meditar sobre la dignidad y la perseverancia ante la adversidad y la potencial derrota.
Así que, si no la has leído, anímate tal como lo hice yo, hoy. A veces, un libro puede estar descansando, olvidado por décadas en tu biblioteca, hasta que le llega la hora de enriquecerse. Por algo, son considerados clásicos contemporáneos. En tal sentido, a manera general, te exhorto, dando el ejemplo, a romper con la inmediatez de algunas redes sociales. Leer implica concentrarse un buen rato, una destreza digna de conservar, además del deleite que se obtiene con la buena literatura.
