Hello everyone dear Hive Book Club community, I hope you are well.... On this occasion I want to share with much enthusiasm my opinions about a book that I really liked... after a long time reading about this story and that many of my acquaintances recommended it to me, I decided to read it. So today I will tell you about Circe, written by Madeleine Miller, I think I finished it a few weeks ago and I am still processing this fascinating journey through Greek mythology. As someone who has always been intrigued by these stories, I found myself completely immersed in this new take on a character who has traditionally been relegated to the margins of The Odyssey. The story of course follows Circe, daughter of the sun god Helios, who discovers that she possesses a unique power that distinguishes her from both gods and mortals: the gift of sorcery.
The author's writing beautifully captures the protagonist's transformation from an overlooked nymph to a formidable figure who forges her own path, despite being exiled to a remote island. What really struck me was how it managed to humanize all these great mythological figures, Circe is not portrayed as simply someone good or bad, but as a whole character, whose actions and choices stem from very identifiable emotions, the way the author explores themes such as power, loneliness and the importance of personal growth I thought was great, especially the way Circe learns to find strength in her isolation rather than just letting herself break.
I found the pacing interesting... the first few chapters progressed quite slowly as the world and its characters were established, it was once Circe begins to discover her powers and who she really is that the narrative picked up a considerably better pace...I really enjoyed how the author manages to weave in familiar mythological tales and characters while keeping Circe's story firmly in the center without overshadowing it at any point.

En esta ocasión quiero compartirles con mucho entusiasmo mis opiniones sobre un libro que realmente me gustó.. después de mucho tiempo leyendo sobre esta historia y que muchos de mis conocidos me la recomendaran, decidí leerla. Así que hoy les hablaré de Circe, escrita por Madeleine Miller, creo que lo terminé hace unas semanas y todavía estoy procesando este fascinante viaje a través de la mitología griega. Como alguien que siempre ha estado intrigado por estos relatos, me encontré completamente inmerso en esta nueva perspectiva de un personaje que tradicionalmente ha sido relegado a los márgenes de La Odisea. La historia sigue por supuesto a Circe, hija del dios del sol Helios, quien descubre que posee un poder único que la distingue tanto de dioses como de mortales: el don de la brujería.
La escritura de la autora captura bellamente la transformación de la protagonista, de una ninfa ignorada a una figura formidable que forja su propio camino, a pesar de ser exiliada a una isla remota. Lo que realmente me impactó fue cómo se logró humanizar todas estas figuras grandes mitológicas, Circe no es representada como simplemente alguien bueno o malo, sino como un personaje completo, cuyas acciones y elecciones surgen de emociones muy identificables, la forma en la que la autora explora temas como el poder, la soledad y la importancia del crecimiento personal me pareció genial, especialmente la manera en como Circe aprende a encontrar fuerza en su aislamiento en lugar de solo dejarse quebrar.
El ritmo me pareció interesante.. los primeros capítulos avanzaron bastante lento, ya que se establecía el mundo y sus personajes, fue una vez que Circe comienza a descubrir sus poderes y quién es realmente, la narrativa cobró un ritmo considerablemente mejor.. yo disfruté mucho cómo la autora logra tejer relatos y personajes mitológicos familiares, mientras mantiene la historia de Circe firmemente en el centro, sin opacarla en ningún momento.
One of the greatest strengths this story has is how it challenges our perceptions of familiar mythological stories by showing them from a completely different perspective, I found it fascinating to see certain events through Circe's eyes, offering new interpretations of classic tales we wanted to know.... While some might find the extensive time spent on Circe's island limiting, I felt this really allowed for much deeper character development, making for a more ultimate exploration of her journey.... Speaking of the writing style, to me it was beautiful without becoming pretentious, even the more fantastical elements felt really unique and above all real, however, I did occasionally find myself wishing for more resolution to certain plot threads.. surely some of the readers might get frustrated by the somewhat episodic nature that some of the chapters have, but I think this structure actually is a plus to the story, as it reflects how immortals would experience time differently than mortals.. that I found interesting.
What I liked most, or well, one of the things I liked most, was how the themes feel contemporary despite taking place in an ancient setting, the author addresses issues of gender, power dynamics and personal autonomy, in a way that is incredibly relevant to modern readers.. obviously I didn't feel anything forced, I feel like many people could look at these types of stories as examples for improvement.... Another thing, the world building is exceptional... it feels very unique to the realm of gods and mortals, the author has a lot of attention to detail when describing everything from divine palaces to beautiful gardens... She makes each setting feel completely authentic and immersive, allowing us to imagine it very easily....
Una de las mayores fortalezas que tiene esta historia es como desafía nuestras percepciones sobre historias mitológicas conocidas al mostrarlas desde una perspectiva totalmente diferente, me resultó fascinante ver ciertos eventos a través de los ojos de Circe, ofreciendo nuevas interpretaciones de cuentos clásicos que queríamos conocer.. Si bien algunos podían encontrar limitante el extenso tiempo dedicado a la isla de Circe, sentí que esto realmente permitió un desarrollo mucho más profundo del personaje, haciendo que se explorara de una manera más última su viaje.. Hablando del estilo de escritura, a mí me resultó hermoso sin llegar a ser pretencioso, incluso los elementos más fantásticos se sintieran realmente únicos y sobre todo reales, sin embargo, ocasionalmente me encontré deseando más resolución para ciertos hilos argumentales.. seguramente algunos de los lectores podrían frustrarse por la naturaleza algo episódica que tienen algunos de los capítulos, pero creo que esta estructura en realidad es un plus para la historia, ya que refleja cómo los inmortales experimentarían el tiempo de manera diferente a los mortales.. eso me pareció interesante.
Lo que más me gustó, o bueno, una de las cosas que más me gustaron, fue cómo los temas se sienten contemporáneos a pesar de llevarse a cabo en un entorno antiguo, la autora aborda temas de género, dinámicas de poder y autonomía personal, de una manera que resulta increíblemente relevante para los lectores modernos.. obviamente yo no sentí nada forzado, siento que muchas personas podrían ver este tipo de relatos como ejemplos para mejorar.. Otra cosa, la construcción del mundo es excepcional.. se siente muy único el reino de los dioses y mortales, la autora tiene mucha atención al detalle al momento de describir todo, desde palacios divinos hasta jardines hermosos.. Hace que cada escenario se sienta completamente auténtico e inmersivo, permitiendo que podamos imaginárnoslo muy fácilmente..
Whether you're a fan of Greek mythology or simply enjoy narratives centered around complex characters, this book offers a compelling exploration of the power of identity and the price of independence... it's a story that will no doubt appeal to fans, people who enjoy a fantasy yet realistic story. It was without a doubt one of my favorite reads of the year, I give it a 4.7/5 rating. While not perfect, Circe is a beautifully crafted reimagining that brings new life to the old stories...the combination of excellent character development, thoughtful themes and elegant prose makes it a highly recommended read, despite some occasional pacing issues, I feel that if you give it a chance you will not regret it at all.... Ya sea que seas fan de la mitología griega o simplemente disfrutas de las narrativas centradas en los personajes complejos, este libro ofrece una exploración convincente del poder de la identidad y el precio de la independencia.. es una historia que sin duda les gustará mucho a los fanáticos, a las personas que disfruten de una historia fantasiosa pero a la vez realista. Fue sin duda de mis lecturas favoritas del año, yo le doy una calificación de 4.7/5. Aunque no es perfecto, Circe es una reimaginación bellamente elaborada que trae nueva vida a los antiguos relatos.. la combinación de excelente desarrollo de personajes, temas reflexivos y prosa elegante la convierte en una lectura muy recomendable, a pesar de algunos problemas de ritmo ocasionales, siento que si le dan la oportunidad no se van a arrepentir para nada..
