Hello everyone, fans of good reading, I hope this time you're doing great! Today I want to share a new review with you, I'll be talking about the book: I am Rome by Santiago Posteguillo... and wow, you have no idea how many things I have in my head... you already know that I love these types of novels, and Posteguillo... pff, he's a genius! I mean, the Scipio and Trajan trilogies are epic, so yes, I was really looking forward to this book, look, from the beginning, the idea hooked me... it's about Julius Caesar, of course, but not the general Caesar that we all know, the conqueror or the dictator... this book delves into his youth, when he was a young man, almost unknown, a lawyer of just 23 years old, and it starts off with everything, with a tension that will kill you: Caesar, very young, comes up with the idea of accusing a mega-powerful senator of corruption, an unscrupulous guy, Dolabela. Just imagine, the victims weren't even Romans, they were Macedonians, in other words, an impossible case, and on top of that, Dolabella had all the money in the world, the best lawyers, and even his own gang of thugs... everyone telling Caesar he was crazy, that his skin was at stake, not just his career.
The start? Brutal! Pure tension, it grabs you from the first page, really... my first impression was... wow! I was completely immersed. The author has a way of writing that transports you. You feel like you're there, walking through Rome, listening to the noise of the Forum... well, maybe not so much the smells, you know what I mean! His descriptions, especially those of the battles—although they're not the main focus here—are... brilliant, what a level of quality, it makes you feel the chaos, the strategy, how raw everything was... it shows you both sides, and that gives it a fantastic depth.
Hola a todos, fanáticos de la buena lectura, espero que en esta ocasión, estén genial! Hoy les quiero compartir una nueva reseña, les hablaré del libro: Roma soy yo de Santiago Posteguillo.. y uf, no saben la cantidad de cosas que tengo en la cabeza.. ustedes ya saben que amo este tipo de novelas, y Posteguillo... pff, es un crack!, o sea, las trilogías de Escipión y Trajano son épicas, así que sí, le tenía unas ganas tremendas a este libro, miren, desde el principio, la idea me enganchó.. va sobre Julio César, claro, pero no el César general que todos conocemos, el conquistador o el dictador.. este libro se mete en su juventud, cuando era un muchacho, casi desconocido, un abogado de apenas 23 años, y arranca con todo, con una tensión que te mueres: César, bien jovencito, se le ocurre la idea de acusar por corrupción a un senador mega poderoso, un tipo sin escrúpulos, Dolabela. Imagínense, las víctimas ni siquiera eran romanos, eran macedonios, o sea, un caso imposible, y encima, Dolabela tenía toda la plata del mundo, los mejores abogados, y hasta su propia banda de matones.. todo el mundo diciéndole a César que estaba loco, que se jugaba el pellejo, no solo su carrera.
El arranque? ¡Brutal! Pura tensión, te atrapa desde la primera página, de verdad.. mi primera impresión fue... ¡wow!, me metí de lleno, el autor tiene una manera de escribir que te transporta, sientes que estás ahí, caminando por Roma, escuchando el ruido del Foro... bueno, quizás los olores no tanto, ustedes me entienden! Sus descripciones, sobre todo las de las batallas –aunque aquí no son lo principal– son.. geniales, qué nivel, te hace sentir el caos, la estrategia, lo crudo que era todo.. te muestra los dos lados, eso le da una profundidad genial.
Okay, let's see, how does the story progress? Look, here something really happened to me at the beginning... I had mixed feelings, because things don't go straight, they're not linear... it starts with the whole trial thing, but suddenly, boom!, it sends you back to tell you how Caesar was formed, his childhood, the important things that made him who he is. A good part of the first half focuses on his uncle, the famous Gaius Marius. There we learn about Marius' epic battles and how he was like a teacher to the young Caesar, giving him strategy and life tips, like: "Be brave, but don't be too clever" or "Never get into a fight you know you're going to lose." All of this is super important to understand the political disaster that the Roman Republic was at that time - the constant and bloody fight between the Populares (who supposedly supported the people, like Marius) and the Optimates (the elite, the corrupt conservatives, led by the fearsome Sulla).
Sulla basically became dictator and went after Marius' family, including Caesar's, and that explains a lot of the danger our protagonist was in! Now, I'll be honest: although the Marius sections are key to understanding Caesar, I did feel that the first half was a little slow. I was so caught up in the trial plot that at times the extremely long descriptions of battles from Marius' past, although beautifully written, made me a little impatient. I wanted to go back and see what was happening to Caesar and the danger he was in. But don't worry, because more or less halfway through the book, whew! Things pick up some serious speed! Caesar's relationship with his wife, Cornelia, starts to have more weight, and we're back fully into the preparations for the trial, the political moves, and how the threats against him grow and grow.
The second half flew by for me... honestly, I couldn't put the book down. As for the characters, César is portrayed as super-responsive, brave, intelligent, he even acknowledges his flaws... you grow fond of him, you support him, his mother, Aurelia, is brilliant! A strong, astute woman, moving in a very dangerous world... the author always does this thing of giving importance to female characters that the story sometimes forgets, and I love that! Cornelia also adds that very human side. If I had to put a 'but' on it, even a tiny bit, it's that sometimes the bad guys, like Sila and Dolabela, feel very, very bad, almost like a cartoon, while César seems almost a perfect hero... and well, real life is more different, isn't it? But perhaps that strong contrast serves the story that Posteguillo wants to tell about the corruption that César fights against.
Ok, a ver, ¿cómo avanza la historia? Miren, aquí sí que al principio me pasó algo... tuve como sentimientos encontrados, porque la cosa no va derechito, no es lineal.. empieza con todo el rollo del juicio, pero de repente, ¡pum!, te manda para atrás, a contarte cómo se formó César, su niñez, las cosas importantes que lo hicieron como es, una buena parte de la primera mitad, se enfoca en su tío, el famosísimo Cayo Mario, ahí aprendemos de las batallas épicas de Mario y cómo fue como un maestro para el joven César, pasándole tips de estrategia y de vida, como: "Sé valiente, pero no te pases de listo" o "Nunca te metas en una pelea que sabes que vas a perder".. todo esto es súper importante para entender el desastre político que era la República Romana en esa época – la pelea constante y sangrienta entre los Populares (que supuestamente apoyaban al pueblo, como Mario) y los Optimates (la élite, los conservadores corruptos, liderados por el temible Sila).
Sila básicamente se volvió dictador y se lanzó contra la familia de Mario, incluyendo la de César, y eso explica un montón el peligro en el que andaba metido nuestro prota! Ahora, les soy sincero: aunque las partes de Mario son claves para entender a César, sí sentí que la primera mitad se me hizo un poquito lenta, estaba tan enganchado con la trama del juicio que a veces las descripciones larguísimas de batallas del pasado de Mario, aunque están escritas de lujo, me ponían un poco impaciente, quería volver ya a ver qué pasaba con César y el peligro que corría. Pero tranquilos, porque más o menos a la mitad del libro, ¡uf!, la cosa agarra una velocidad impresionante! la relación de César con su esposa, Cornelia, empieza a tener más peso, y ya volvemos de lleno a los preparativos del juicio, las movidas políticas y cómo las amenazas contra él crecen y crecen.
La segunda mitad se me fue volando.. de verdad, no podía soltar el libro, en cuanto a los personajes, a César te lo pintan súper correcto, valiente, inteligente, hasta reconoce sus fallos.. le agarras cariño al, lo apoyas, su mamá, Aurelia, ¡es genial! Una mujer fuerte, astuta, moviéndose en un mundo peligrosísimo.. el autor siempre hace esto de darle importancia a personajes femeninos que la historia a veces olvida, y eso me encanta! Cornelia también le suma ese lado bien humano, si tuviera que ponerle un 'pero', así chiquitito, es que a veces los malos, como Sila y Dolabela, se sienten muy, muy malos, casi como de dibujo animado, mientras que César parece casi un héroe perfecto.. y bueno, la vida real es más diferente, ¿no? Pero quizás ese contraste tan fuerte sirve para la historia que Posteguillo quiere contar sobre la corrupción contra la que lucha César.
Something important, people, and Posteguillo is good at this, is to remember that although it is clear that he did a lot of research, this is a historical novel... I mean, he imagines things, conversations, he fills in the gaps where history doesn't tell us anything, so it's like a window to the past, very good! But you read it knowing that the author put his creative touch into it, and the best thing is that it makes you want to go look for more information on your own, but you know what is the best? The trial scenes! They are pure adrenaline! How they talk, the legal strategies, the backstabbing... uff, it hooks you, seeing how César grows, learning from Mario but becoming himself... it's brilliant, satisfying... the whole political mess is also very well told.
So, who is this book for? For anyone who likes historical novels, especially those about Ancient Rome... if you are fascinated by Julius Caesar and want to know how it all began, you have to read it... and if you are already a fan of Posteguillo, you will feel right at home, it is like returning to his most classic style, yes, prepare yourselves, it is a long book, with a lot of detail... and you have to pay attention to those jumps in time, and it must be mentioned that it is the first book of six... in short, I give it a 4.5 out of 5 stars, it is written, wow!, in a spectacular way, the research is evident and it brings a key historical figure to life in a new way... I took off half a star, perhaps, just because of the pace, a little slower at the beginning, but what comes next and the quality of how it is written totally makes up for it... it is a start that grabs you... and well... that would be all for today, I will see you in the next reviews, take care! Algo importante, gente, y Posteguillo es bueno en esto, es recordar que aunque se nota que investigó un montón, esto es novela histórica.. o sea, él se imagina cosas, conversaciones, rellena los huecos donde la historia no nos cuenta nada, así que es como una ventana al pasado, ¡buenísima!, pero uno lo lee sabiendo que el autor le metió su toque creativo, y lo mejor es que te dan ganas de ir a buscar más info por tu cuenta, pero ¿saben qué es lo que es de lo mejor? Las escenas del juicio! Son pura adrenalina! Cómo hablan, las estrategias legales, las traiciones por la espalda.. uff, te engancha, ver cómo César va creciendo, aprendiendo de Mario pero haciéndose él mismo.. es genial, satisfactorio.. todo el lío político también está muy bien contado.
Entonces, ¿para quién es este libro? Para cualquiera que le guste las novelas históricas, sobre todo la de la Antigua Roma.. si te fascina Julio César y quieres saber cómo empezó todo, tienes que leerlo.. y si ya eres fan de Posteguillo, te vas a sentir como en casa, es como volver a su estilo más clásico, eso sí, prepárense, es un libro largo, con mucho detalle... y hay que ponerle atención con esos saltos en el tiempo, y hay que mencionar que es el primer libro de seis.. en resumen, yo le pongo ¡un 4.5 de 5 estrellas, está escrito ¡uff!, de manera espectacular, se nota la investigación y le da vida a un personaje histórico clave de una forma nueva.. le quité media estrellita, quizás, solo por ese ritmo, un poquito más lento al principio, pero lo que viene después y la calidad de cómo está escrito lo compensa totalmente.. es un arranque que te atrapa.. y bueno.. eso sería todo por hoy, nos veremos en las próximas reseñas, cuidense mucho!
