Today I come with mixed feelings, it's time to talk about: Love, Theoretically by Ali Hazelwood... you all already know what Ali Hazelwood is like with her books, I mean, you more or less know what to expect: the super smart girl in science, the kind of grumpy guy who is actually a total jerk, and the whole academic thing... look, this book definitely goes in that direction, it follows the formula, but... oh, I don't know, I had mixed feelings, like yes but no, you see? A bit of an odd mix this time... right off the bat, I'll tell you, the premise caught me. We have Elsie, our protagonist, who's a theoretical physicist - and here, pause, I love how Ali Hazelwood always gets into these super-specific scientific careers, she gives it a cool twist. It turns out Elsie's juggling a ton of jobs as an adjunct professor, barely making ends meet, and this, honestly, felt super real, it even hurts a little. So, to earn a little extra money, what does she do?

She has this secret job... she's a fake girlfriend for rent! And through there she meets Greg, a client who's a lovely person and with whom she gets along super well, but in a friend-like way, right? Buuuut, what's the plot twist? Greg’s older brother turns out to be Jack Smith, THE Jack Smith!, a mega-famous and highly respected experimental physicist… I mean, if you know a little bit about physics, you’ll know that theoretical physicists and experimental physicists… ugh, they’re like oil and water, cat and dog, mortal rivals in academia! And to add fuel to the fire, what do you think? Jack is right on the committee that decides if Elsie gets her dream job at MIT… and if that wasn’t enough, the guy became famous for an article he wrote years ago taking a swipe at theoretical physics… I mean, basically Elsie’s life’s work!

And of course, he only knows Elsie as his brother’s girlfriend… not just any girlfriend, but the ‘sweet librarian’ version she pretends to be. Imagine the mess! What a situation! I mean, this whole fake date mess, mixed with the academic rivalry and the life-or-death job interview... it's crazy. I swear the first half of the book, even the first half, flew by. The tension between them, the sarcastic comments, those moments when you think, 'How the hell is she going to get out of this now?!'... that's Ali Hazelwood at her finest!

Hola a todos, amigos lectores, fanáticos de las buenas historias, espero que estén super bien, hoy vengo con varios sentimientos encontrados, ya toca hablar de: Love, Theoretically de Ali Hazelwood.. ustedes ya saben cómo es Ali Hazelwood con sus libros, o sea, uno ya más o menos sabe qué esperar: la chica súper inteligente en ciencias, el tipo medio grumpy pero que en el fondo es un pan de Dios, y todo el rollo académico.. miren, este libro definitivamente va por ahí, cumple con la fórmula, pero... ay, no sé, tuve sentimientos encontrados, como que sí pero no, ¿me explico? Una mezcla medio rara esta vez.. de entrada, les digo, la premisa me atrapo, tenemos a Elsie, nuestra prota, que es física teórica – y aquí, pausa, me encanta cómo Ali Hazelwood siempre se mete en estas carreras científicas súper específicas, le da un toque genial, resulta que Elsie está haciendo malabares con un montón de trabajos como profesora adjunta, apenas le alcanza para vivir, y esto, la verdad, se sintió súper real, hasta duele un poquito. Entonces, para ganar un dinerito extra, ¿qué hace?

Tiene este trabajo secreto.. es novia falsa de alquiler! Y por ahí conoce a Greg, un cliente que es un amor de persona y con quien se lleva súper bien, pero en plan amigos, ¿eh? Peeeero, ¿cuál es el plot twist? Que el hermano mayor de Greg resulta ser Jack Smith, ¡EL Jack Smith!, un físico experimental mega famoso y respetadísimo.. a ver, si ustedes saben un poquito de física, sabrán que los físicos teóricos y los experimentales... ¡uf!, son como el agua y el aceite, perro y gato, ¡rivales a muerte en la academia! Y para echarle más leña al fuego, ¿qué creen? Jack está justo en el comité que decide si Elsie consigue el trabajo de sus sueños en el MIT.. y por si fuera poco, el tipo se hizo famoso por un artículo que escribió hace años tirándole con todo a la física teórica... o sea, ¡básicamente al trabajo de toda la vida de Elsie!

Y claro, él solo conoce a Elsie como la novia de su hermano.. no cualquier novia, sino la versión 'dulce bibliotecaria' que ella finge ser. ¡Imagínense el enredo! ¡Qué situación! O sea, este lío de la cita falsa, mezclado con la rivalidad académica y la entrevista de trabajo que es de vida o muerte.. una locura, les juro que la primera parte del libro, fácil la primera mitad, se me fue volando. La tensión entre ellos, los comentarios sarcásticos, esos momentos en que piensas '¡¿y ahora cómo rayos va a salir de esta?!'... ¡eso es Ali Hazelwood en su máxima expresión!

Okay, let's talk about Ali's writing style, which is still easy to read, it hooks you in quickly as always... it flows well, and the dialogues, especially those innuendos and the banter between Elsie and Jack, are great, you laugh a lot, the whole academic world thing, the pressure, the research talks, the physics concepts nailed down... all of that is there, and it feels super authentic, that's a plus... if you like that vibe in her books, you'll find a lot of it here. Moving on to the characters, look, Elsie's story, her evolution, was for me the strongest part of the book... she's the typical person who always wants to please everyone, you know? who spends her time adapting to what she thinks others want, her whole thing is discovering who she really is underneath all those masks she wears, both the literal ones with her fake girlfriend job, and the figurative ones in her life. Honestly, some parts felt super close, like you can relate to them, maybe even a little too real at times.

Now, Jack... hmm, I don't know... he's your typical Ali Hazelwood protagonist: tall, kind of mysterious, brilliant, intense gaze... you know the drill, yeah, he has his good moments, especially later on when he gets surprisingly honest about his feelings... but overall, I felt like he fell a little... short, you know? Like he lacked development compared to Elsie. We do see glimpses, yes, of his complicated family and his job, but I didn't feel like I fully understood him as a person, beyond being the intelligent, kind of grumpy heartthrob... and well, about the pacing... like I said, the first half? Great! I ate it up in no time, but about halfway through, more or less, after some important things were revealed, the story seemed to lose a lot of force for me... the main conflicts that moved it were resolved or changed course, and the second half felt quite slower, less engaging, it started to get kind of heavy, honestly, and I realized that I was already hooked like in the beginning.

Okay, hablemos de la forma de escribir de Ali, que la verdad, sigue siendo fácil de leer, te engancha rápido como siempre.. fluye bien, y los diálogos, especialmente esas indirectas y el pique entre Elsie y Jack, están geniales, te ríes bastante, todo el rollo del mundo académico, la presión, las pláticas de investigación, los conceptos de física bien clavados... todo eso está ahí, y se siente súper auténtico, eso sí es un puntazo a favor.. si a ustedes les gusta esa onda de sus libros, aquí van a encontrar muchísimo de eso. Pasando a los personajes, miren, la historia de Elsie, su evolución, fue para mí lo más fuerte del libro.. es la típica persona que siempre quiere complacer a todos, ¿saben? que se la pasa adaptándose a lo que cree que los demás quieren, todo su rollo es ir descubriendo quién es ella de verdad debajo de todas esas máscaras que usa, tanto las literales con su trabajo de novia falsa, como las figurativas en su vida. Honestamente, algunas partes se sintieron súper cercanas, como que te identificas, tal vez hasta demasiado reales a veces.

Ahora, Jack... mmm, no sé.. es el típico prota de Ali Hazelwood: alto, medio misterioso, brillante, mirada intensa... ya se la saben, sí, tiene sus momentos buenos, sobre todo más adelante cuando se pone sorprendentemente honesto con sus sentimientos.. pero en general, sentí que se quedó un poquito... corto, ¿saben? Como que le faltó desarrollo comparado con Elsie. Vemos chispazos, sí, de su familia complicada y su trabajo, pero no sentí que llegara a entenderlo a fondo como persona, más allá de ser el galán inteligente y medio gruñón.. y bueno, sobre el ritmo... como les dije, ¿la primera mitad? ¡Buenísima! Me la comí en nada, pero como a la mitad, más o menos, después de que se revelan unas cosas importantes, como que la historia perdió un montón de fuerza para mí.. los conflictos principales que la movían como que se resolvieron o cambiaron de rumbo, y la segunda mitad se sintió bastaaante más lenta, menos atrapante, se empezó a hacer medio pesada, la verdad, y me di cuenta que ya estaba enganchado como al principio.

And well, we have to talk about the typical Hazelwood things, those repeated jokes, the pop culture references (yes, people, Twilight is back again a lot!), that very particular humor... all of that is here, sometimes it's super nice and funny, it gives it a kind of light vibe, you know? But other times, honestly, it felt kind of forced, even shocking, especially when he threw in immature or bathroom jokes just when it was supposed to be a more serious or intimate moment... to me, honestly, it kind of threw me off at times, it disconnected me from the story. There are a couple of spicy scenes, as you can imagine, one, I felt like it did contribute something to the plot and the development of the characters, it was okay... but the other... it was just there, you know? It’s not that it was horribly overpowering, but I didn’t feel like it was necessary either, really. The ending… look, maybe it’s just me being a bit dumb, but I was a bit confused by the last chapter and the epilogue… it’s like they’re building you up to some super-important gesture from Elsie, and when it happens, I was like… ‘Oh, is that all there is to it? ’

It felt very… meh, anticlimactic, or like I didn’t quite get what it meant after the whole journey she’s been on… so, who is this book for? Look, if you’re an Ali Hazelwood fan and you love her formula – the STEM stuff, the academic rivals, the grumpy-guy-nice-girl dynamic – you’ll definitely like this, it hits all of those notes. If you're just getting into her books, it's a good entry point, it gives you a good glimpse into her style... buuuut, if you've already read her other novels and the same problems and structure seem to be starting to feel a little repetitive... this one will seem very similar to the others; honestly, it doesn't stray much from Hazelwood's style. Overall, I give it... mmm, 3.8/5 stars.

The strong start, Elsie’s relatable story, and that typical Hazelwood charm saved it quite a bit, but the pacing issues in the second half, the male lead feeling a bit plain, those weird little things about her that are sometimes distracting, and the somewhat disappointing ending, kept it from becoming a new favorite for me… It was a good, enjoyable read, especially at the beginning, but it didn’t seem to come together as well as some of her previous books, it’s definitely worth it if you like her style, but lower your expectations a bit. Y bueno, tenemos que hablar de las cositas típicas de Hazelwood, esas bromitas que repite, las referencias a la cultura pop (sí, gente, ¡Crepúsculo sale OTRA VEZ un montón!), ese humor tan particular... todo eso está aquí, a veces es súper simpático y divertido, le da como esa onda ligera, ¿saben? Pero otras veces, la verdad, se sintió medio forzado, hasta chocante, sobre todo cuando metía chistes medio inmaduros o de baño justo cuando se suponía que era un momento más serio o íntimo.. a mí, la verdad, a ratos me sacaba de onda, me desconectaba de la historia. Hay un par de escenas spicy, como ya se imaginan, una, sentí que sí le aportaba algo a la trama y al desarrollo de los personajes, estuvo bien.. pero la otra... como que nomás estaba ahí, ¿saben? No es que sobrara horrible, pero tampoco sentí que fuera necesaria, la verdad, el final... miren, tal vez soy yo que estoy medio menso, pero me quedé un poco confundido con el último capítulo y el epílogo..como que te van preparando para un gesto súper importante de Elsie, y cuando pasa, me quedé así de... 'A ver, ¿eso era todo?'.

Se sintió como muy... meh, anticlimático, o como si no hubiera entendido bien qué significaba después de todo el viaje que ella hizo.. entonces, ¿para quién es este libro? Miren, si ustedes son fans de Ali Hazelwood y aman su formulita – el rollo STEM, los rivales académicos, la dinámica del gruñón con la chica buena onda – seguro les va a gustar, cumple con todo eso. Si apenas le van a entrar a sus libros, es una buena puerta de entrada, te muestra bien su estilo.. peeeero, si ya leyeron sus otras novelas y como que ya empiezan a sentir un poquito repetitivos los mismos problemas y la misma estructura... este chance sí se les va a hacer muy parecido a lo demás, la verdad, no se sale casi nada de la plantilla de Hazelwood. En general, yo le doy... mmm, un 3.8/5 estrellas.

El inicio fuerte, la historia de Elsie con la que te puedes identificar un montón, y ese encanto típico de Hazelwood lo salvaron bastante, pero los problemas de ritmo en la segunda mitad, que el prota masculino se sintiera medio simple, esas cositas raras de ella que a veces distraen, y el final medio decepcionante, hicieron que no se convirtiera en un nuevo favorito para mí.. fue una lectura buena, agradable, sobre todo al principio, pero como que no terminó de cuajar tan bien como otros libros suyos anteriores, definitivamente vale la pena si les gusta su estilo, pero bájenle un poquito a las expectativas.
