Hello everyone, my fellow reading fanatics, I hope you're all doing great. This time I want to share my thoughts on a super profound book that has been highly recommended to me... today I'll be talking about: The Color Purple by Alice Walker, and honestly, it's like a super classic, I've always had it on my mind, one of those books that you feel like you already know a little bit, as if someone had told you what it's about... the truth is, I thought I already knew what it was all about, I was like, "yeah, yeah, strong themes, important book, I get it now".. but, let me tell you something, actually reading it? It's something completely different... it hits you right in the stomach in a way I never expected at all. The most important thing you need to know about this book is that it's a super powerful read, full of themes that will leave you thinking a lot.

It really makes you think about things and the world and how we got to this point... from the moment you open the book, you're thrown into Cely's world, and it's powerful... the book tells the story of two sisters, Cely and Netty, and how their lives take very different paths... Cely's life, especially at the beginning, is incredibly hard, really incredibly hard... she suddenly becomes a wife and mother, and the abuse she suffers, both verbal and physical, from her husband, who is years older than her, is brutal to read, just like that, without any anesthesia. And it's not just him... even his children treat her terribly, and to top it all off, in the middle of all this, her husband brings his mistress home! It's like, how much can a person endure? It really brings up super important issues like domestic violence and the role of women in the home in such a real and raw way that it shocks you... The racial issue, given that the story takes place in the early 1900s in the southern United States, in the middle of Prohibition, is also super important in the story, and it shapes everything.

Hola a todos, amigos fanáticos de la lectura, espero que estén genial, en esta ocasión les quiero compartir mis opiniones sobre un libro super profundo, que me han recomendado mucho.. hoy les hablaré de: El Color Púrpura de Alice Walker, y de verdad, es como un re clásico, siempre lo tuve ahí pendiente, de esos libros que sientes que ya conoces un poco, como si te hubieran contado de qué va.. la verdad, pensaba que ya sabía qué onda, me decía, "sí, sí, temas fuertes, libro importante, ya entiendo".. pero, a ver, déjenme decirles algo, ¿leerlo de verdad? Es otra cosa completamente diferente.. te pega directo en el estómago de una forma que no me esperaba para nada, lo más importante que tienen que saber de este libro es que es una lectura súper potente, llena de temas que te dejan pensando un montón.

Realmente te hace darle vueltas a las cosas y pensar en el mundo y cómo llegamos a este punto.. desde que abres el libro, te avientan de lleno al mundo de Cely, y es fuerte.. el libro nos cuenta la historia de dos hermanas, Cely y Netty, y cómo sus vidas se van por caminos muy distintos.. la vida de Cely, sobre todo al principio, es durísima, pero durísima en serio.. se convierte en esposa y mamá de golpe, y el abuso que sufre, tanto de palabra como físico, por parte de su marido, que le lleva un montón de años, es brutal de leer, así, sin anestesia. Y no solo él.. hasta los hijos de él la tratan fatal, y para colmo, en medio de todo este rollo, el marido trae a la amante a la casa! Es como, ¿cuánto aguanta una persona? de verdad que te pone de frente temas súper importantes como la violencia doméstica y el papel de la mujer en la casa, de una manera tan real y cruda que te impacta.. el tema racial, siendo que la historia pasa a principios de 1900 en el sur de Estados Unidos, en plena época de la Prohibición, también es súper importante en la historia, y le da forma a todo.

The way this story is told is incredible. The novel has a super strange structure because it's written entirely in letter form. On the one hand, we have the letters Cely writes to God at the beginning of each chapter, where she's basically pouring out her heart, telling you everything that's happening to her. It's as if you're there, spying on her most secret thoughts. It's almost like a diary, or even like prayers, but like that, like bits of her inner world that she lets loose on you. And then, she starts writing to her sister Netty, and then, boom! We get Netty's replies, and an incredible back-and-forth ensues that completely captivates you. It really is a super intimate way of telling the story, and she pulls it off beautifully.

And the writing style itself is unique. The beginning might seem a little... simple? But that's the magic! Cely’s voice is unique, you recognize it immediately… it’s as if you were listening to her speak, with her own way of saying things and thinking, it perfectly captures what her limited world was like and that she didn’t have much education at the beginning… but as the book progresses, and Cely grows, her voice also changes, it evolves, and that is pure character development… you clearly see how she goes from being this super oppressed and abused girl to being an incredibly strong woman in the end… not only does she survive, but she finds her voice and her power, and that is brutal! The themes of oppression, whew! They’re woven throughout The Color Purple.

It’s not just one type of oppression, but it’s like layers and layers. We see the oppression of Black people, obviously, but also the oppression of wives by their husbands, the colonial oppression of Africans—because Netty goes on a missionary to Africa, and we see that part as well—and even the oppression of parents toward their children, in so many different ways. But amidst all this darkness, there are also these incredible relationship and love stories. The love between sisters, of course, is at the center, but also the love between friends, even connections you least expect. We meet characters that really stick with you, like Sofia, the stepson’s wife, who is just this force of nature, super strong. Then there’s Shug Avery, this jazz singer who is the best. Through Shug, Cely really learns to value and accept her sexuality, and that’s a huge turning point for her.

La forma en que está contada esta historia es increíble, la novela tiene una estructura súper rara, porque está escrita todita en forma de cartas.. por un lado, tenemos las cartas que Cely le escribe a Dios al principio de cada capítulo, donde ella básicamente está abriendo su corazón, contándote todo lo que le pasa.. es como si estuvieras ahí, espiando sus pensamientos más secretos, es casi como un diario, o hasta como si fueran oraciones, pero así, como pedacitos de su mundo interior que te suelta. Y ya después, empieza a escribirle a su hermana Netty, y luego, ¡pum!, recibimos las respuestas de Netty, y se arma un ida y vuelta increíble que te atrapa por completo.. de verdad que es una forma súper íntima de contarte la historia, y le sale de maravilla.

Y el estilo de escritura en sí, es único, el principio, tal vez te parece un poco… ¿simple? Pero es que ¡esa es la magia! La voz de Cely es única, la reconoces al toque.. es como si la estuvieras escuchando hablar, con su propia forma de decir las cosas y de pensar, capta perfecto cómo era su mundo limitado y que no tenía mucha educación al principio.. pero conforme avanza el libro, y Cely va creciendo, su voz también cambia, evoluciona, y eso es desarrollo de personaje en estado puro.. ves clarito cómo pasa de ser esta chica súper oprimida y maltratada a ser una mujer increíblemente fuerte al final..no solo sobrevive, sino que encuentra su voz y su poder, ¡y eso es brutal! Los temas de opresión, ¡uf!

Están tejidos por todo El Color Púrpura.. no es solo un tipo de opresión, sino que son como capas y capas, vemos la opresión de la gente negra, obvio, pero también la opresión de las esposas por los maridos, la opresión colonial de los africanos – porque Netty se va de misionera a África, y vemos también esa parte – e incluso la opresión de los padres hacia los hijos, de muchas maneras diferentes.. pero en medio de toda esta oscuridad, también hay unas historias de relaciones y de amor que son increíbles, el amor entre hermanas, claro, es el centro, pero también el amor entre amigas, hasta conexiones que menos te esperas. Conocemos a personajes que se te quedan grabados, como Sofía, la esposa del hijastro, que es una fuerza de la naturaleza, súper fuerte.. luego está Shug Avery, esta cantante de jazz que es lo máximo. A través de Shug, Cely aprende de verdad a valorar y a aceptar su sexualidad, y ese es un punto de inflexión gigante para ella.

Some might say this book focuses so much on who oppresses and who is oppressed, that it feels like it's trying to force that on you. I understand why someone might think that... but for me, Alice Walker does it so, so well, because we see everything through Cely's eyes, from her limited, first-person point of view. She doesn't have fancy words or know much about the world, but that's precisely what makes her story feel more real and powerful. And you know what, sometimes the characters you touch the most, the ones you truly root for, are the most innocent, the ones who haven't yet been hardened by life.

If I had to highlight some things, without spoiling anything, obviously, I would say that the character development is on another level, the way the story flows, even with those short chapters that seem like diary entries or single prayers, is impressive, you can almost read the novel as if it were a very long sentence that begins with "Dear God" and ends with "Amen" .. it's as if an entire life were unfolding in these moments like this, like fragments. If I had to put a but on it, maybe I would say that some parts at the end felt a little... rushed? Or as if everything was resolved too easily? But really, it's a minimal detail compared to everything the book leaves you with..

Who is going to like this book? anyone who loves stories where the most important thing is the characters, if you like books that make you think and feel, those that touch on strong themes but also celebrate strength and hope, this is the perfect book.. if you like historical fiction, especially stories that take place in the American South, this one is for you too.. for me, The Color Purple is a solid 4.8/5 stars, it’s one of those books that stays in your mind long after you finish it.. it breaks your heart, yes, but in the end it leaves you with hope, despite all the ugly things that happen to the characters, The Color Purple is full of heart, love, and joy. Walker isn’t afraid to make them suffer, but even when it seems like there’s a happy ending, terrible things can happen, and that makes you connect with them even more.. and well, that’s all for today, tell me what you think of the book! Algunos podrían decir que este libro se enfoca tanto en quién oprime y quién es oprimido, que parece que te quieren meter eso, entiendo por qué alguien podría pensar eso.. pero para mí, Alice Walker lo hace tan, pero tan bien, porque todo lo vemos a través de los ojos de Cely, desde su punto de vista limitado, en primera persona.. ella no tiene palabras rebuscadas ni sabe mucho del mundo, pero justo eso hace que su historia se sienta más real y poderosa, y saben qué, a veces los personajes que más te llegan, a los que de verdad apoyas, son los más inocentes, los que todavía no se han endurecido por la vida.

Si tuviera que destacar algunas cosas, sin spoilearles nada, obvio, diría que el desarrollo de los personajes es de otro nivel, la forma en que la historia va fluyendo, incluso con esos capítulos cortitos que parecen entradas de diario o como oraciones sueltas, es impresionante, casi que puedes leer la novela como si fuera una frase larguísima que empieza con "Querido Dios" y termina con "Amén".. es como si toda una vida se desplegara en estos momentos así, como fragmentos..si tuviera que ponerle un pero, tal vez, diría que algunas partes al final se sintieron un poco… ¿apuradas? ¿O como si todo se resolviera demasiado fácil? Pero de verdad, es un detalle mínimo comparado con todo lo que te deja el libro..

A quién le va a gustar este libro? cualquiera que ame las historias donde lo más importante son los personajes, si te gustan los libros que te hacen pensar y sentir, los que tocan temas fuertes pero que también celebran la fuerza y la esperanza, es el libro perfecto.. si te gusta la ficción histórica, sobre todo las historias que pasan en el sur de Estados Unidos, este también es para ti.. para mí, El Color Púrpura es un sólido 4.8/5 estrellas, es de esos libros que se te quedan grabados en la mente mucho después de que lo terminas..te rompe el corazón, sí, pero al final te deja con esperanza, a pesar de todo lo feo que les pasa a los personajes, El Color Púrpura está lleno de corazón, de amor y de alegría. Walker no tiene miedo de hacerlos sufrir, pero incluso cuando parece que hay un final feliz, pueden pasar cosas terribles, y eso te hace conectar aún más con ellos.. y bueno, eso es todo por hoy, cuéntenme sus opiniones del libro!
