Hello everyone, dear friends of Hive Book Club, I hope you're all doing super well. This time, I want to share my personal opinions on a rather curious book. It's time to talk about: The Host by Stephenie Meyer. And honestly, I didn't even know what to expect, you know? Like Twilight but with aliens or what? But I was super surprised, it hooked me a lot, much more than I thought... it really has its own style, and it did get me thinking... look, the idea of the entrance is super interesting. You have this alien invasion, but watch out! It's not the typical one with explosions and crazy ships. These aliens, which are called "Souls", are like... rather peaceful, almost like cool parasites. They get into human bodies and boom! It's like they erase the person who was there before, all because they believe that this makes the universe a better, more peaceful place.

And well, basically they’ve already won… the Earth is all pacified, clean, no wars… but of course, there’s always a ‘but’… it’s that this way of taking control, so quiet, so subtle, is scarier than a war with explosions, don’t you think? But what really caught me was the vibe with the protagonist, we follow Wanderer (or Wanda, Traveler, whatever you want to call her), who is a Soul that they put in the body of Melanie, a rebellious human that they caught… and here comes the good part: Melanie’s consciousness isn’t erased! She’s still there inside, fighting, talking to Wanderer inside her own head… imagine! That internal dialogue, that constant argument between the two of them in the same body… wow! It’s fascinating, really, it’s a super original way of exploring conflict, identity… everything!

You are literally in the alien’s head trying to control a human body, while the original owner is yelling at it about everything: where to go, insults, memories... how crazy that leads me to what I loved the most: seeing what we humans are like, but through Wanderer’s eyes... look, Souls are ancient, they’ve traveled through thousands of worlds, they’re supposed to be pure tranquility and logic. But suddenly, Wanderer is hit with all of Melanie’s super intense love for her brother Jamie and her boyfriend Jared, her rage, her fear, her loyalty... all at once! These strong human emotions are something totally new for Wanderer, and seeing her dealing with jealousy, love, rage for the first time... and how she begins to value that human passion, even though we are a mess... ugh! That really caught me, it totally turns the tables: the alien begins to understand the beauty of us, the “defectives” she was supposed to eliminate.

Hola a todos, queridos amigos de Hive Book Club, espero que estén super bien, en esta ocasión, les quiero compartir mis opiniones personales sobre un libro bastante curioso, es el momento de hablar de: The Host de Stephenie Meyer, y la verdad, yo no sabía ni qué esperar, ¿saben? ¿Onda Crepúsculo pero con aliens o qué? Pero me súper sorprendió, me enganchó un montón, mucho más de lo que pensaba.. de verdad tiene su propio estilo, y sí me dejó pensando.. miren, la idea de entrada está súper interesante. Tienes esta invasión alien, pero ¡ojo!, no es la típica con explosiones y naves a lo loco, estos aliens, que se llaman "Almas", son como... más bien pacíficos, casi como parásitos buena onda, se meten en los cuerpos humanos y ¡pum!, como que borran a la persona que estaba antes, todo porque creen que así hacen el universo un lugar mejor, más tranquilo.

Y pues, básicamente ya ganaron.. la Tierra está toda pacificada, limpiecita, sin guerras... pero ¡claro!, siempre hay un 'pero'.. es que esa forma de tomar el control, tan calladita, tan sutil, da más miedo que una guerra con todo y explosiones!, ¿no creen? Pero lo que de verdad me atrapó fue la onda con la protagonista, seguimos a Wanderer (o Wanda, Viajera, como quieran decirle), que es un Alma a la que meten en el cuerpo de Melanie, una humana rebelde que agarraron.. y aquí viene lo bueno: ¡la conciencia de Melanie no se borra! Sigue ahí adentro, luchando, hablándole a Wanderer dentro de su propia cabeza.. imagínense! Ese diálogo interno, ese pleito constante entre las dos en el mismo cuerpo... ¡wow!, es fascinante, de verdad, es una forma súper original de explorar el conflicto, la identidad... ¡todo!

Estás literal en la cabeza de la alien intentando controlar un cuerpo humano, mientras la dueña original le está gritando de todo: pa' dónde ir, insultos, recuerdos.. qué locura eso me lleva a lo que más me encantó: ver cómo somos los humanos, pero desde los ojos de Wanderer.. miren, las Almas son antiguas, han viajado por miles de mundos, se supone que son la pura tranquilidad y lógica. Pero de repente, a Wanderer le cae encima todo el amor súper intenso de Melanie por su hermano Jamie y su novio Jared, su rabia, su miedo, su lealtad.. todo junto! Estas emociones humanas tan fuertes son algo totalmente nuevo para Wanderer, y verla lidiando con los celos, el amor, la rabia por primera vez... y cómo empieza a valorar esa pasión humana, aunque seamos un desastre... ¡uf!, eso me atrapó muchísimo, le da la vuelta a la tortilla totalmente: la alien empieza a entender lo bonito de nosotros, los "defectuosos" que se supone venía a eliminar.

And well, the relationships... ugh, they get super complicated here, Wanderer feels this super strong connection between Melanie and Jared, which in itself is awkward... but then, as Wanderer is finding his own groove inside Melanie's body and starts dealing with the other humans in hiding, boom!, he starts having feelings for another guy, Ian... imagine! You have this super weird and intense love triangle (or is it a love square? I don't even know anymore!) with two consciousnesses in one body and two different types, it sounds crazy, and it is, but Meyer manages to make it reach you, to really feel it... speaking of the other humans, that "found family" thing with the group of rebels hiding in caves in the desert was great... at first, obviously, they hate her, they're scared of Wanderer: he's the enemy in their friend's body, right? But seeing how those relationships change, little by little, with pain, especially with Jamie and at the end with others... it was well handled... you end up loving these characters, with their issues and all, and you feel how Wanderer struggles to fit in, to protect them, even though technically she's one of the invaders.

The truth is, Meyer really does a great job creating those group dynamics, so semi-united but with their problems. Now, I'll be honest, the pace at the beginning is a bit slow, huh? There are a lot of internal problems, a lot of explanation of the world while Wanderer adapts and we get to know the Soul Society and Melanie's past through her memories... it takes a while to get to know the rebels, but once she gets there, the tension rises a lot and the story gets much better! The descriptions of the hidden rebel base and how they live, half desperately... you imagine them perfectly. In addition, Wanderer suddenly mentions the other planets where he has lived – the "flower world", the "bat world" – and that gives it a bigger, super cool science fiction touch, even if they are only quick glimpses.

Y bueno, las relaciones... ¡uff!, se ponen súper complicadas aquí, Wanderer siente esa conexión súper fuerte de Melanie con Jared, lo que ya de por sí es qué incómodo.. pero luego, mientras Wanderer va encontrando su propia onda dentro del cuerpo de Melanie y empieza a tratar con los otros humanos escondidos, ¡pum!, empieza a sentir cosas por otro chavo, Ian.. imagínense! Tienes este triángulo amoroso (¿o es un cuadrado amoroso? ¡Ya ni sé!) súper raro e intenso, con dos conciencias en un cuerpo y dos tipos diferentes, suena loquísimo, y sí lo es, pero Meyer logra que te llegue, que lo sientas de verdad.. hablando de los otros humanos, ¡ese problema de la "familia encontrada" con el grupo de rebeldes escondidos en cuevas en el desierto estuvo genial.. al principio, obvio, la odian, le tienen miedo a Wanderer: es el enemigo en el cuerpo de su amiga, ¿no? Pero ver cómo esas relaciones van cambiando, poquito a poco, con dolor, especialmente con Jamie y al final con otros.. estuvo bien manejado.. te terminas encariñando con estos personajes, con sus rollos y todo, y sientes cómo Wanderer lucha por encajar, por protegerlos, aunque técnicamente sea una de las invasoras.

La verdad, Meyer se la rifa creando esas dinámicas de grupo, así medio unidas pero con sus problemas, ahora, les soy sincero, el ritmo al principio sí es medio lento, ¿eh? Hay mucho problema interno, mucha explicación del mundo mientras Wanderer se adapta y vamos conociendo la sociedad de las Almas y el pasado de Melanie por sus recuerdos.. se tarda un rato en llegar con los rebeldes, pero una vez que llega ahí, ¡la tensión sube un montón y la historia se pone mucho más buena! Las descripciones de la base rebelde escondida y cómo viven, medio a la desesperada.. te las imaginas perfecto, además, Wanderer de repente menciona los otros planetas donde ha vivido – el "mundo flor", el "mundo murciélago" – y eso le da un toque de ciencia ficción más grande, súper chévere, aunque solo sean como vistazos rápidos.

Well, what little things would you change or where it could have been better? Look, maybe if they'd cut a little bit of the slower parts at the beginning, the pace would have been faster.. at times, I did feel like the kind characters went a bit overboard with that whole wanting-to-sacrifice-themselves thing, you know? That might be very Meyer-esque, but the truth is, it almost always worked well within the story, because of that vibe of Wanderer's peaceful nature clashing with the intense human emotions. So, who might like this book? I think if you enjoy science fiction that digs more into characters, emotions, relationships, and moral dilemmas, rather than pure action and gunplay, you'll like it. Fans of original ideas, found-family stories, and complicated romantic entanglements will find a lot of cool stuff here.

Definitely not for someone looking for a fast-paced alien story with all the fighting, overall I give The Host a solid 4.5/5 stars. The original idea, the incredible internal conflict between Wanderer and Melanie, and exploring what it means to be human from an alien’s perspective… I really got caught up in it… even though it started off a bit slow, the depth of the emotions and how the characters developed made it totally worth the read… I definitely recommend it if you’re looking for something a little different in the sci-fi genre! Bueno, ¿qué cositas le cambiaría o dónde pudo estar mejor? Miren, tal vez si le hubieran cortado un poquito a las partes más lentas del inicio, el ritmo hubiera estado más ágil.. a veces, sí sentí que los personajes se pasaban un poco con eso de querer sacrificarse por todos, ¿saben? que puede ser muy del estilo de Meyer, pero la verdad, casi siempre funcionó bien dentro de la historia, por esa onda de la naturaleza pacífica de Wanderer chocando con las emociones humanas tan intensas. Entonces, ¿a quién le podría gustar este libro? Yo creo que si disfrutan la ciencia ficción que se clava más en los personajes, en las emociones, en las relaciones y en los dilemas morales, más que en la pura acción y los disparos, les va a gustar, los fans de las ideas originales, de las historias de "familia encontrada" y de los enredos románticos complicados van a encontrar un montón de cosas chidas aquí.

Definitivamente no es para alguien que busque una historia de aliens a toda velocidad con pura pelea, en general, yo le doy a The Host , unas sólidas 4.5/5 estrellas. La idea tan original, ese conflicto interno tan increíble entre Wanderer y Melanie, y explorar qué significa ser humano desde la perspectiva de un alien.. la verdad es que me atraparon un montón.. a pesar de que arranca medio lento, la profundidad de las emociones y cómo se desarrollan los personajes hizo que la lectura valiera muchísimo la pena.. definitivamente se los recomiendo si andan buscando algo un poquito diferente dentro de la ciencia ficción!
