Hello everyone, fans of good readings, I hope you're doing great, and that you've been reading a lot, dear community... today I want to share a new review with you, I'll be talking about the book "Without Merit" I came across this story with a vibe between curious and like saying "mmm, let's see how it goes", because you already know what Colleen Hoover is like, pure drama and emotions, the idea hooked me a lot: a super dysfunctional family living in a remodeled church, that sounds crazy in itself! Imagine the plot: the house divided like that, like by floors, with the mom locked in the basement for mental health issues, and the dad upstairs with his new wife, who, mind you, was the mom's nurse... WTF! From there you already feel that something strange is going on... there is a dense vibe, full of toxicity, hidden secrets and that feeling that no one here is a match made in heaven... The protagonist, Merit, is an enigmatic and peculiar character to the max, one strange thing (but one that I liked) is that she collects trophies that she hasn't won. What's up with that?!

I thought it was really strange and cool, as if those trophies were the achievements that she wants but can't get, a way of showing that she is struggling to fit into a family that doesn't understand her... you can see that she feels totally out of place, Merit doesn't fit in at all and she is screaming for who she is. Hoover's style is already familiar, fast-paced and gripping, but here I felt that at times he went a bit overboard with the chaos. The story is full of unexpected twists and family secrets that leave you speechless... just when you think you understand how things are going with the characters, boom! Another secret or betrayal turns everything upside down. This keeps you fully engaged, but sometimes so many surprises at once can be a bit overwhelming.

Hola a todos, fanáticos de las buenas lecturas espero que estén genial, y que hayan estado leyendo mucho, querida comunidad.. hoy les quiero compartir una nueva reseña, les hablaré del libro "Without Merit" entre a esta historia con una onda entre curiosa y como diciendo "mmm, vamos a ver qué tal", porque ya saben cómo es Colleen Hoover, puro drama y emociones, la idea me enganchó un montón: una familia súper disfuncional viviendo en una iglesia remodelada, ya de por sí eso suena loco! Imagínense la trama: la casa dividida así, como por pisos, con la mamá encerrada en el sótano por temas de salud mental, y el papá arriba con la nueva esposa, que ojo, era la enfermera de la mamá.. ¡WTF! desde ahí ya sientes que algo raro pasa.. se respira una vibra densa, llena de toxicidad, secretos ocultos y esa sensación de que aquí nadie es un pan de dios.. La protagonista, Merit, es un personaje enigmático y peculiar a más no poder, una cosa rara (pero que a mí me gustó) es que colecciona trofeos que no ha ganado. ¡¿Qué onda con eso?!

Me pareció muy raro y cool, como si esos trofeos fueran los logros que ella quiere pero que no consigue, una forma de mostrar que está luchando por encajar en una familia que no la entiende.. se nota que se siente totalmente fuera de lugar, Merit no encaja para nada y está buscando a gritos quién es. El estilo de Hoover ya lo conocemos, ágil y te atrapa de una, pero aquí sentí que a veces se le fue un poco la mano con el caos, la historia está llena de giros inesperados y secretos de familia que te dejan con la boca abierta.. cuando crees que entiendes cómo va la onda con los personajes, ¡pum!, otro secreto o traición que lo revuelca todo, esto mantiene el interés a full, pero a veces tanta sorpresa junta te puede saturar un poco..

Speaking of characters, there’s a bit of everything here. Merit, the main character, is well-rounded, we understand her and everything, but I feel like some of the other family members came off a bit flat, like they needed a little push. The toxic family vibe is felt from the very beginning: the mom seems disconnected from reality, the dad makes some really questionable decisions, and the church, which is now their home, seems to reflect all the secrets and lies that are spread there. All of this creates an atmosphere that grips you but also distresses you, although, I repeat, some secondary characters could have had more substance. One thing I do recognize about this book is that it dares to tackle strong themes. The novel delves into mental health, sexuality, complicated relationships, and even touches on the subject of suicide attempts.

Hoover doesn’t beat around the bush when it comes to showing these things, which gives the story a raw and sometimes even uncomfortable touch. These themes give it depth, but also make for an emotionally intense read. If you are easily moved to tears or are affected by these things, be careful, the book can be a bit harsh at times... as for the plot, "Without Merit" is one of those books that keeps you thinking "what the heck is going on here?" the whole time, everything that is revealed changes your perspective on the characters and why they do what they do... this keeps the story from getting boring, but it can also be a double-edged sword, because at times I felt like the book wanted to cram too many secrets in at once, I would have liked it to be a bit slower, so I could digest each twist more calmly and for it to have more weight.

Hablando de los personajes, aquí hay de todo un poco, Merit, la protagonista, sí que está bien armada, la entendemos y todo, pero siento que algunos de los otros familiares quedaron un poco planos, como que les faltó un empujoncito.. la onda tóxica familiar se siente desde el minuto cero: la mamá como desconectada de la realidad, el papá tomando unas decisiones súper cuestionables y la iglesia está, que ahora es su casa, como reflejando todos los secretos y mentiras que se manejan ahí.. todo esto crea un ambiente que te atrapa pero a la vez te angustia, aunque, repito, algunos personajes secundarios pudieron haber tenido más chicha. Una cosa que sí le reconozco a este libro es que se atreve con temas fuertes.. la novela le entra a la salud mental, la sexualidad, las relaciones complicadas, y hasta toca el tema del intento de suicidio..

Hoover no se anda con rodeos para mostrar estas cosas, lo que le da un toque crudo y a veces hasta incómodo a la historia, estos temas le dan profundidad, pero también hacen que la lectura sea emocionalmente intensa. Si eres de lágrima fácil o te afectan estas cosas, ojo, que el libro puede ser un poco duro por momentos.. en cuanto a la trama, "Without Merit" es de esos libros que te tienen pensando "¿qué rayos está pasando aquí?" todo el tiempo, cada cosa que se revela te cambia la perspectiva de los personajes y por qué hacen lo que hacen.. esto hace que la historia no aburra, pero también puede ser un arma de doble filo, porque a veces sentí que el libro quería meter demasiados secretos juntos, a mí me hubiera gustado que fuera un poco más lento, para poder digerir cada giro con más calma y que tuviera más peso.

Let's see, we can't talk about this story without touching on the controversy it caused among people... a debate arose about the ending and some of the twists and turns, many even compare it and it doesn't come out very well with other books by Hoover, some think it's a risky move to explore family trauma, while others say it's too much of a tangle and leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth, I personally am there, like in the middle. I appreciate that the author took a risk and the ambition she put into the story, but I also think some things could have been better... but be careful, this book generates debate, and that in the end is what makes it interesting... if you like stories that touch your emotional fiber, full of family secrets and with characters who are a disaster, maybe you will get hooked. But if you prefer more linear plots or are looking for a more relaxed romantic story, this may not be for you...

Anyway, it's a read that makes you think, although it's not perfect... it's a book that stirred controversy and is super human in showing how screwed up a dysfunctional family is and how one struggles to find oneself. It left me with mixed feelings, on one hand, I admire Hoover's courage to delve into these complicated issues, but on the other, I think the story would have been better if it had been more polished... my rating is 3.5/5. Definitely not my favorite Colleen Hoover book, if you're looking for a story that makes you think, that moves you and keeps you glued to the pages, give it a chance... A ver, no podemos hablar de esta historia, sin tocar el temita de la polémica que armó entre la gente.. se armó un debate sobre el final y algunas vueltas de tuerca, muchos incluso lo comparan y no sale muy bien parado con otros libros de la Hoover, hay quienes piensan que es una jugada arriesgada para explorar el trauma familiar, mientras que otros dicen que es un enredo demasiado grande y que te deja con mal sabor de boca, yo, personalmente, estoy ahí, como en el medio. Valoro que la autora se haya arriesgado y la ambición que le puso a la historia, pero también creo que algunas cositas pudieron haber quedado mejor.. pero ojo, que este libro genera debate, y eso al final es lo que lo hace interesante.. si te gustan las historias que te tocan la fibra emocional, llenas de secretos de familia y con personajes que son un desastre, tal vez y te engancha. Pero si prefieres tramas más lineales o buscas una historia romántica más tranqui, quizás este no sea para ti..

En fin, es una lectura que te deja pensando, aunque no es perfecta.. es un libro que armó controversia y súper humano al mostrar lo jodido que es una familia disfuncional y cómo uno lucha por encontrarse a sí mismo. Me dejó con sentimientos encontrados, por un lado, admiro la valentía de Hoover para meterse con estos temas tan complicados, pero por otro, creo que la historia hubiera sido mejor si se hubiera pulido más.. mi calificación es un 3.5/5. Definitivamente, no es mi libro favorito de Colleen Hoover, si andas buscando una historia que te haga pensar, que te mueva el piso y te mantenga pegado a las páginas, dale una oportunidad..
