[ENG-ESP] 📚✨ Book Review: Powerless and Powerful 🗡️🪡

Hello Hello Community! ✨, it turns out that I got back into a fantasy story that is not yet finished, yes I know I do not learn from my mistakes, but this book was downloaded several months ago and although I really wanted to start it, I do not know why I kept putting it off, and the truth is that I'm not very clear how I will develop this review because if you noticed, I'm going to talk about two books, but in my mind because of the way I read them I see them as one, and technically it's a single story but told from different perspectives, so in short I'm in a mess 🤣, the truth is that today we will talk about Powerless and Powerful 🗡️🪡.

A terrible plague unleashed an avalanche of deaths in the kingdom of Ilya, many of those who managed to survive acquired extraordinary powers, became exceptional, powerful, elites, but many others remained simple vulgars, with no powers and nothing to make them stand out. However, one fine day the King of Ilya decrees that all vulgarians are a danger to the elites, and thus are criminals destined to die, which makes Paedyn Gray a criminal by destiny and a thief by necessity. Unexpectedly, one day Paedyn finds herself in a situation where she saves the life of one of Ilya's princes: Kai Azer also known as the Executioner, and it is after this event that she is thrown into one of the kingdom's most bloodthirsty contests, the Trials of the Purge.

With death almost certain, Paedyn is forced to leave Adena, the person she has been inseparable from for years, and who has cared for and protected her from the moment they met. Now Adena fears that she will never see her best friend alive again, and she has to fend for herself, a task that becomes difficult when you live on the streets, where the only way to feed herself is by stealing, an act she is so bad at that when she tries it, she has to be saved by a complete and mysterious stranger: Mak, with whom she shares the sadness of having a loved one in trials, so forming an alliance, Mak and Adena will soon test their loyalty, their bravery and the love that is blossoming between them.

Powerless is the first book published by author Lauren Roberts, it marks the beginning of a trilogy of which there are already two books published: Powerless and Reckless, and the third part of this story is expected to be released in April 2025. Powerful is a companion story set in the same timeline as the events described in Powerless, but told from the perspective of Adena, Paedyn's best friend, our female protagonist. Although chronologically, Powerful was published after Powerless, it is recommended that both books are read together, i.e. interweaving the chapters of both stories, and this is how I read them, which is why for me and for my head, it is a single book narrated from several points of view.

Because while Powerless is narrated by Paedyn and Kai, Powerful is narrated by Adena and Mak, which is something I loved about this story because it gives you a very broad version of all the events that are taking place, we have a vision of what happens in the castle where the contestants of the trial are, but we also have the perspective of what happens in the slums where Pae and Adena come from.

The main story revolves around Pae and Kai, they are our main protagonists, and I can't find another way to say this: they are simply wonderful, both complement each other in a scary way, he on his side has been educated and trained to be the future executor of the kingdom, basically an assassin of the king, whose main mission is to kill all the vulgar, she being just a vulgar grew up and was trained to defend herself from any threat, and also to pretend a minor power that in this one is that of psychic, that makes her despise her true vulgar nature, both are characters that have lived very hard times and that have always had to show their strongest version, Kai has been basically tortured by his father and forced to become an assassin, while Paedyn when she lost her father (the only living parent she had left) when she was still a child, she was forced to live in the streets and become a professional thief, which obviously brought her many physical punishments.

The way their story evolves is very well done, from the moment they meet it is evident what they cause in each other, and from the beginning they let us see that "rivalry" between them, they are the only ones who manage to break the other (in many ways) and obviously that is something that scares them from beginning to end, and seeing the facts from both versions you can realize at what moment the feelings for each other begin, although I must say that in Kai they are seen in a better way 💙.

On the other hand we have Mak and Adena, the truth is their story is very short and the development of their relationship is therefore a bit rushed, but I completely understand that this is so because in the end it is a complementary story that also doesn't end well. I do feel that if you as a writer took the time to bring a companion book, at least take the time to give a good development to the characters you introduce there, especially if they don't have a major relevance in the main story, because while Adena does appear in Powerless but only a few times, Mak is a character that so far only belongs in Powerful, and I really hope they waste him as a character because he does have a lot of potential, his power is important and particular in such a way that he doesn't deserve to be simply left aside, so I hope that for the third book they bring him back as someone relevant to the story (and I say third because in the second book he doesn't appear).

Still, the way the story of these two characters is presented is well thought out, as I said it's not a book that ends well, so narrating a rushed but at the same time tender romance, is a very well executed way to break our hearts, because there's really no other way to say it 🤣. Adena is an extremely sweet girl, the absolute counterpart of her best friend, and that makes her almost perfect for the mysterious and rough Mak, they are a couple that gives a lot of tenderness 💕.

In general the story has a big flaw, and it's that it doesn't end up hooking you, or at least it did for me, the main focus is the purge trials and they don't happen until the middle of the book, and when they arrive you do see the strong inspiration they have in The Hunger Games, which in the end I don't mind if you just give it more relevance, because although they are interesting and well elaborated, they feel like an extra element of the story, I also feel that Kai was not shown in the role of executioner as he should be, I mean, during most of the story we are told that he is a killer monster that everyone is afraid of, and at the end we are never shown that version 🤣, so for me Kai is a sweet little bread 🤣.

Also something that I don't know if it's a fault of the book itself or of the transcription, but I have to rule it out, is that sometimes there were words or sentences with mistakes, not spelling mistakes, but words that appeared stuck together or sentences where an article or a word was missing, honestly it's the first time it's happened to me, so it was weird. Another important element that I also feel as a fault, is that if you want to enjoy the story completely, you have to read the two books simultaneously, because in Powerless you don't feel the importance of Adena's character, and Powerful as an independent book doesn't hold up, that is, if you don't read it together with Powerless, the story is not understood and has no relevance.

To finish there is a character that I can't not talk about, and it's Kitt, Kai's older brother and therefore the future King, he seems to me someone of great relevance in the story, especially because he represents those who even showing their sweetest and kindest version, are vilely betrayed, with him also develops a kind of love triangle well executed, in fact it is the second time I see that this is a literary resource is used in a way that does not feel forced, but that is given natural and I liked that, although I have to say that I didn't really understand (at least in this book) Kitt's closeness with Paedyn, especially because it was very obvious to everyone the relationship that was going on between Kai and Pae, so seeing Kitt as "the third wheel " never really clicked with me, although the friendship that developed between him and Paedyn over the course of the book felt cute and genuine to me, I did feel that he was having feelings for her that weren't being reciprocated 🤷🏻‍♀️.

¡Hola Hola Comunidad! ✨, resulta que me volví a adentrar en una historia de fantasía que aún no está acabada, sí lo sé yo no aprendo de mis errores, pero es que éste libro lo tenía descargado desde hace varios meses y aunque tenía muchas ganas de empezarlo, no sé porque lo seguía postergando, y la verdad es que no tengo muy claro cómo voy a desarrollar ésta reseña porque si ya se percataron, voy a hablarles de dos libros, pero en mi mente por la forma en como los leí los veo como uno solo, y técnicamente es una sola historia pero contada desde perspectivas distintas, así que en resumen estoy hecha un lío 🤣, lo cierto es que el día de hoy hablaremos sobre Powerless y Powerful 🗡️🪡.

Una terrible plaga desató una avalancha de muertes en el reino de Ilya, muchos de los que lograron sobrevivir adquirieron extraordinarios poderes, se volvieron excepcionales, poderosos, élites, pero muchos otros siguieron siendo simples vulgares, sin poderes y sin nada que los haga resaltar. Sin embargo, un buen día el Rey de Ilya decreta que todos los vulgares son un peligro para los élites, y por ende son criminales destinados a morir, lo que convierte a Paedyn Gray justamente en una criminal por destino y una ladrona por necesidad. Inesperadamente, un día Paedyn se ve envuelta en una situación donde le salva la vida a uno de los príncipes de Ilya: Kai Azer también conocido como el ejecutor, y es tras éste evento que se ve arrojada a una de las contiendas más sanguinarias del reino, las Pruebas de la Purga.

Con una muerte casi asegurada, Paedyn se ve forzosamente alejada de Adena, la persona de la que ha sido inseparable desde hace años, y quienes se han cuidado y protegido desde el momento en que se conocieron. Ahora Adena teme no volver a ver con vida a su mejor amiga, y además debe valerse por sí misma, labor que se vuelve difícil cuando vives en la calle, donde la única manera de alimentarse es robando, acto que se le da tan mal, que cuando lo intenta tiene que ser salvada por un completo y misterioso desconocido: Mak, con quien comparte la tristeza de tener a un ser querido en las pruebas, así que formando una alianza, Mak y Adena pronto pondrán a prueba su lealtad, su valentía y el amor que está floreciendo entre ellos.

Powerless es el primer libro publicado por la autora Lauren Roberts, el mismo marca el inicio de ésta trilogía de la cual ya se cuenta con dos libros publicados: Powerless y Reckless, y se espera que la tercera parte de ésta historia salga a la venta en Abril del 2025. Powerful es una historia complementaria que se sitúa en la misma línea temporal de los hechos descritos en Powerless, pero que se encuentran narrados desde la perspectiva de Adena, la mejor amiga de Paedyn nuestra protagonista femenina. Aunque cronológicamente, Powerful se publicó después de Powerless, lo recomendable es que ambos libros se lean de manera conjunta, es decir entrelazando los capítulos de ambas historias, y bajo ésta recomendación es como yo los leí, es por esa razón que para mí y para mi cabeza, se trata de un solo libro narrado desde varios puntos de vista.

Porque mientras Powerless cuenta con la narración de Paedyn y Kai, Powerful es narrado por Adena y Mak, lo cual es algo que me encantó de ésta historia porque te da una versión sumamente amplia de todos los acontecimientos que se están llevando a cabo, tenemos una visión de lo que ocurre en el castillo donde se encuentran los contendientes de la prueba, pero además tenemos la perspectiva de lo que ocurre en los barrios bajos que es de donde vienen Pae y Adena.

La historia principal gira alrededor de Pae y Kai, ellos son nuestros protagonistas principales, y no encuentro otra manera de decir ésto: son sencillamente maravillosos, ambos se complementan de una forma que asusta, él por su lado ha sido educado y entrenado para ser el futuro ejecutor del reino, básicamente un asesino del rey, cuya misión principal es acabar con todos los vulgares, ella al ser justamente una vulgar creció y fue entrenada para defenderse de cualquier amenaza, y además fingir un poder menor que en éste es el de psíquica, que le haga despistar su verdadera naturaleza vulgar, ambos son personajes que han vivido momentos muy duros y que les ha tocado siempre mostrar su versión más fuerte, Kai ha sido básicamente torturado por su padre y obligado a convertirse en un asesino, mientras que Paedyn al perder a su padre (el único progenitor vivo que le quedaba) cuando aún era una niña, se vió obligada a vivir en la calle y a convertirse en una ladrona profesional, lo cual obviamente le trajo muchos castigos físicos.

La forma en cómo evoluciona su historia está muy bien lograda, desde que se conocen es evidente lo que causan el uno en el otro, y desde el inicio nos dejan ver esa “rivalidad” que hay entre ellos, son los únicos que logran doblegar al otro (de muchas formas) y obviamente eso es algo que los asusta de principio a fin, y viendo los hechos desde ambas versiones logras darte cuenta en qué momento comienzan los sentimientos por el otro, aunque debo decir que en Kai se logran ver de mejor manera 💙.

Por otro lado tenemos a Mak y Adena, la verdad su historia es muy corta y el desarrollo de su relación es por ende un poco apresurado, pero entiendo por completo que sea así porque al final es una historia complementaria que además no acaba bien. Sí siento que si ya como escritora te tomaste el tiempo de traer un libro complementario, al menos toma el tiempo de darle un buen desarrollo a los personajes que presentas ahí, sobre todo si éstos no tienen mayor relevancia en la historia principal, porque si bien Adena sí aparece en Powerless aunque pocas veces, Mak es un personaje que hasta los momentos solo pertenece a Powerful, y de verdad espero que no lo desperdicien como personaje porque sí tiene mucho potencial, su poder es importante y particular de tal forma que no se merece simplemente ser dejado de lado, así que espero que para el tercer libro lo traigan de vuelta como alguien relevante para la historia (y digo tercero porque en el segundo no aparece).

Aún así, la forma en cómo está presentada la historia de estos dos personajes está bien pensada, como ya dije no es un libro que acaba bien, por lo que narrar un romance apresurado pero al mismo tiempo tierno, es una forma muy bien ejecutada de rompernos el corazón, porque la verdad no hay otra forma de decirlo 🤣. Adena es una chica sumamente dulce, la contraparte absoluta de su mejor amiga, y eso la hace casi perfecta para el misterioso y tosco de Mak, son un pareja que da mucha ternura 💕.

En general la historia tiene un gran fallo, y es que no termina de enganchar, o al menos a mi me pasó, el foco principal son las pruebas de la purga y las mismas no ocurren sino hasta la mitad del libro, y cuando llegan si ves la fuerte inspiración que tienen en Los Juegos del Hambre, lo cual al final a mí no me molesta si tan solo le dieras mayor relevancia, porque aunque son interesantes y bien elaboradas, se sienten como un elemento extra de la historia, igual siento que faltó mostrar a Kai en el rol de ejecutor como es debido, es decir, durante la mayor parte de la historia se nos dice que es un monstruo asesino al que todos temen, y al final nunca nos muestran esa versión 🤣, o sea para mí Kai es un pancito dulce 🤣.

Además algo que no sé si es una falla en sí del libro o de la transcripción, pero que tengo que descartar, es que a veces había palabras u oraciones con errores, o sea no de ortografía, sino de palabras que aparecían pegadas u oraciones donde faltaba un artículo o una palabra, honestamente es primera vez que me pasa, así que fue raro. Un elemento también importante y que en parte también lo siento como falla, es que en definitiva si quieres disfrutar de la historia por completo, tienes que leer los dos libros en simultáneo, porque en Powerless no se siente la importancia del personaje de Adena, y Powerful como libro independiente no se sostiene, o sea si no lo lees en conjunto con Powerless, la historia no se entiende ni tiene relevancia.

Para finalizar hay un personaje del que no puedo no hablar, y se trata de Kitt, el hermano mayor de Kai y por ende el futuro Rey, me parece alguien de mucha relevancia en la historia, sobre todo porque representa a aquellos que incluso mostrando su versión más dulce y amable, son vilmente traicionados, con él además se desarrolla una especie de triángulo amoroso bien ejecutado, de hecho es la segunda vez que veo que éste es un recurso literario se utiliza de una manera que no se siente forzado, sino que se da natural y eso me gustó, aunque debo decir que realmente no entendí (al menos en éste libro) la cercanía de Kitt con Paedyn, sobre todo porque para todos era muy evidente la relación que se estaba dando entre Kai y Pae, así que ver a Kitt como “el tercero en discordia” no me terminó de encajar nunca, pese a que la amistad que se desarrolló entre él y Paedyn durante el transcurso del libro se me hizo linda y genuina, sí sentí que en él estaban aflorando sentimientos hacia ella que no estaban siendo correspondidos 🤷🏻‍♀️.
