[ENG-ESP] ⌚🪝 Book Review: Hooked (A Never After Novel) 💊🥃

Hello Hello Community! ✨, It happens that from time to time I want to read questionable stories 😂, and although 10 years ago I wouldn't have even thought of reading a book of this genre, nowadays I manage to enjoy these stories in small doses 😂. My first review in this community was of a dark romance, which in fact was the first book of this genre that I read in my entire life, today I bring you a review about a book that is handled under the same tonality, because sometimes it is interesting to read about villains who triumph, and female protagonists who stay with the one who would burn the world for them, so today we will talk about Hooked: A Never After Novel ⌚🪝.

James has spent his whole life with a single purpose in mind: to take revenge on Peter Michaels, the man who years ago was responsible for ruining his life forever, so one day, when Peter's daughter enters his bar, James sees the perfect opportunity to carry out his revenge, for this he only has to seduce his daughter and get to Peter through her, however everything starts to get complicated when strange things begin to happen in his business, he has a traitor infiltrated among his people and he must find out who it is as soon as possible, because in addition to this he has realized something much more serious: he is falling in love.

Wendy has been overprotected by her father all her life, a cold, distant and wealthy man who was once a loving father but has long since ceased to be one. One night, under the influence of her friends, Wendy arrives at James' bar, with whom she immediately has a very particular interaction that leads to a dangerous but addictive relationship, which intensifies over time and although Wendy knows that James is dangerous, the more she gets to know him the more her feelings for him grow, although these feelings are also directed at his darker version, the one everyone knows as Hook.

There is no way to keep the surprise until the end, this is a retelling of Peter Pan 😂, in which we will see how the villain Hook triumphs 😂, so I think it's important to start this review clarifying that this is not a sweet and pink romance at all, it's a story full of morally questionable and quite uncomfortable situations if you are not familiar with this genre, in fact this book belongs to the series of books to which Scarred belongs, which I already told you about in my first review for this community, so as I said at that time, this is a dark and turbulent story, but addictive and with an excellent narrative, it has a couple of elements that could have performed better, but all in all it is a very good story.

In the line of books in this series, and I say series and not saga because each story is completely independent, Hooked is the first one and to some extent that is noticeable, like Scarred this one is also narrated from the point of view of both protagonists, which gives us a complete view of the story, which is something I always like. Among the long list of actions and sensitive issues that are touched upon in this book, the one that for me was most relevant or had the greatest impact was the abuse (of all categories) to which one of the protagonists is subjected, especially because from the beginning it is hinted at but not confirmed, and although at no point does it explicitly talk about it, the traumas and behaviours of the character confirm it.

Now talking about the main characters, I must say that personally I felt more affinity with James than with Wendy, in many occasions Wendy's personality or her genuine way of seeing the world made me despair a little bit, although in the end I was really surprised about a specific action she does, that didn't take away that most of the time I was waiting for her to explode, send everything to the sink and take charge of her life, and in this I included James as well, because at one point in the story he does something to her that made me very angry and although I understood why, I also felt that Wendy needed an explosion of character that unfortunately didn't come 🤷🏻‍♀️, because unlike how the author introduced us to the female protagonist of Scarred, this story presents us with someone who is innocent and who, due to overprotection, doesn't know how to face life and doesn't know how to run away from danger.

Now, James on the other hand is a highly tortured character, not only he had to face the loss of his parents at a young age, but he also had to live the rest of his childhood and adolescence next to a most cruel human being, and it is this in the end what leads him to get involved in a world of violence where he must be superior so he doesn't get trampled again. I love the way this character is written, because he is extremely charming even when he is a criminal, it is inevitable for me not to compare him with Tristan from Scarred, because although I liked that character, many times I felt him too sadistic for my taste, something that did not happen with James, because here is very well marked the duality between the version of him that still keeps some nobility, and the cruel version that was built throughout his story, which is the one we know as Hook.

The rhythm of the story seems to me perfect and in accordance, the author really has a great way of writing that is able to catch you from the first moment, however this book has its flaws, small but present, and lie mostly with the end, about halfway through the story you begin to present a situation of betrayal and attempts on James's business, It even involves the death of someone important, all this under the name of Croc, and although at first it seems to be about someone in particular, there came a point where it became clear to me that it was another person very close to our male protagonist, and so far so good, because sometimes that's what stories are also about, to go discovering through the clues that you are given.

The weak point came when in the end, the presentation of Croc was reduced to a quick and meaningless denouement, that is to say, they built us an idea of someone who was quickly dominating a criminal group that was going against James, and that they had managed to destabilize him quickly, and then give him the simplest and quickest ending 🤷🏻‍♀️, in my opinion quite weak, although I understand that the focus of this book was not to give the role of villain to that character but to the one who was raised from the beginning, which is Peter. Besides this, I feel that some characters were wasted who could have been given more relevance, such as Wendy's brother 🤷🏻‍♀️.

¡Hola Hola Comunidad! ✨, resulta y acontece que de vez en cuando a mí me da por querer leer historias cuestionables 😂, y aunque hace 10 años no habría ni pensado en leer un libro de éste género, hoy por hoy logró disfrutar en pequeñas dosis éstas historias 😂. Mi primera reseña en ésta comunidad fue de un dark romance, que de hecho fue el primer libro de éste género que leí en toda mi vida, hoy les traigo una reseña acerca de un libro que se maneja bajo la misma tonalidad, porque a veces es interesante leer sobre villanos que triunfan, y protagonistas femeninas que se quedan con el que quemaría el mundo por ellas, así que hoy hablaremos sobre Hooked: Una Historia de Nunca Jamás ⌚🪝.

James ha pasado toda su vida aferrado a un único propósito: vengarse de Peter Michaels, el hombre que años atrás se encargó de arruinar su vida para siempre, así que un día, cuando la hija de Peter ingresa a su bar, James ve la oportunidad perfecta para llevar a cabo su venganza, para ello solo tiene que seducir a su hija y llegar a Peter a través de ella, sin embargo todo se empieza a complicar cuando cosas extrañas comienzan a ocurrir en su negocio, tiene un traidor infiltrado entre los suyos y debe descubrir quien es lo más pronto posible, porque además de ésto se ha dado cuenta de algo mucho más grave: se está enamorando.

Wendy ha estado sobreprotegida por su padre toda la vida, un hombre frío, distante y adinerado, que un día fue un padre amoroso pero que hace mucho dejó de serlo. Una noche llevada por la influencia de sus amigas, Wendy llega al bar de James, con quien inmediatamente mantiene una interacción bastante particular que acaba en una peligrosa pero adictiva relación, la cual se va intensificando con el tiempo y aunque Wendy sabe que James es alguien peligroso, mientras más lo conoce más crecen sus sentimientos hacía él, aunque éstos sentimientos también van dirigidos a su versión más oscura, esa a la que todos conocen como Garfio.

No hay forma de mantener la sorpresa hasta el final, ésto se trata de retelling de Peter Pan 😂, en el cual veremos como el villano Garfio triunfa 😂, así que de esa forma me parece importante comenzar ésta reseña aclarando que ésto para nada es un romance dulce y rosa, es una historia cargada de situaciones moralmente cuestionables y bastante incómodas si no se está familiarizado con éste género, de hecho éste libro pertenece a la serie de libros a la que pertenecen Scarred, del cual ya les hablé en mi primera reseña para ésta comunidad, así que tal y como dije en ese momento, ésta es una historia oscura y turbulenta, pero adictiva y con una excelente narrativa, tiene un par de elementos que pudieron desempeñarse mejor, pero dentro de todo es una muy buena historia.

En la línea de libros de ésta serie, y digo serie y no saga porque cada historia es completamente independiente, Hooked es el primero y hasta cierto punto eso se nota, al igual que Scarred éste también está narrado desde el punto de vista de ambos protagonistas, lo cual nos da una visión completa de la historia, que es algo que a mí siempre me gusta. Dentro de la larga lista de acciones y temas delicados que se tocan en éste libro, el que para mí fue más relevante o de mayor impacto fue el de abuso (de todas las categorías) al que es sometido uno de los protagonistas, sobre todo porque desde el inicio lo dejan entrever pero no lo confirman, y aunque en ningún momento hablando explícitamente del tema, los traumas y comportamientos que realizan el personaje te lo confirman.

Ahora ya hablando propiamente de los protagonistas, debo decir que personalmente sentí más afinidad con James que con Wendy, en muchas ocasiones la personalidad o la forma tan genuina que tenía Wendy de ver el mundo me desesperaban un poco, aunque en el final me sorprendí muchísimo sobre una acción específica que ella realiza, eso no quitó que la mayor parte del tiempo estaba esperando que ella explotara, mandara todo al fregadero y se hiciera cargo de su vida, y en esto incluía a James también, porque en un punto de la historia él le hace a ella algo que a mi me enojó un montón y aunque entendía el motivo, también sentía que hacía falta una explosión de carácter por parte de Wendy que desafortunadamente no llegó 🤷🏻‍♀️, porque a diferencia de como la autora nos presentó a la protagonista femenina de Scarred, ésta historia nos presenta a alguien inocente y que producto de la sobreprotección, no sabe enfrentarse a la vida y no sabe huir del peligro.

Ahora bien, James por otro lado es un personaje altamente torturado, no solo tuvo que enfrentarse a la pérdida de sus padres a una corta edad, sino que además le tocó vivir el resto de su infancia y adolescencia al lado de un ser humano de lo más cruel, y es ésto al final lo que lo lleva a involucrarse en un mundo de violencia donde él debe ser superior para que no lo vuelvan a pisotear. Me encanta la forma en como está escrito éste personaje, porque es sumamente encantador aún incluso cuando es un criminal, es inevitable para mí no compararlo con Tristán de Scarred, porque aunque ese personaje me gustó, muchas veces lo sentí demasiado sádico para mi gusto, cosa que no me pasó con James, pues aquí queda muy bien marcado la dualidad entre la versión de él que aún guarda algo de nobleza, y la versión cruel que se fue construyendo a lo largo de su historia, que es la que conocemos como Garfio.

El ritmo de la historia me parece perfecta y acorde, de verdad que la autora tiene una grandiosa forma de escribir que es capaz de atraparte desde el primer momento, sin embargo este libro tiene sus fallas, pequeñas pero presentes, y radican en su mayoría con el final, aproximadamente como desde la mitad de la historia te comienzan a presentar una situación de traición y atentados hacía el negocio de James, incluso implica la muerte de alguien importante, todo ésto bajo el nombre de Cocodrilo, y aunque al principio parece tratarse de alguien en particular, llegó un punto en que para mí se hizo evidente que se trataba de otra persona muy cercana a nuestro protagonista masculino, y hasta ahora todo bien, porque a veces de eso también se tratan las historias, de ir descubriendo a través de las pistas que te dan.

El punto débil vino cuando en el final, la presentación de Cocodrilo se vió reducida a un desenlaces rápido y sin mayor sentido, o sea nos construyeron una idea de alguien que estaba dominando rápidamente un grupo criminal que iba en contra de James, y que habían logrado desestabilizarlo rápidamente, para luego darle el final más simple y rápido 🤷🏻‍♀️, a mi parecer bastante flojo, aunque entiendo que el foco de todo éste libro, no era darle el rol de villano a ese personaje sino a quien se planteó desde el inicio, que es Peter. Además de ésto siento que se desperdiciaron algunos personajes a quienes se les pudo dar mayor relevancia, como por ejemplo el hermano de Wendy 🤷🏻‍♀️.
