Like Water for Chocolate and Magic Realism [ESP-ENG]

Como agua para chocolate immerses us in an atmosphere where time stands still in Tita's life, where we are trapped in a beautiful story where magic envelops us.

The story made me cry, love and laugh. Very few writers manage to penetrate my mind, however, Laura manages to capture my attention. It could be because of the setting, or because of the chocolate. I just know that I have read this book several times and I always find something I hadn't noticed before.

Oh, Tita, like your story many women in the world lived. They were subdued, suffocated and repressed by authoritarian parents. Relegated to the kitchen, to the care of siblings and housework.

It is fascinating how the writer makes us imagine you in your world, the kitchen. The smell of garlic, spices, coriander, laurel. The delicious meals that you learned to prepare from Nacha and that you keep in your recipe book.

The book is made up of twelve very particular chapters where the experiences of the protagonists are captured, and at the same time how Mexican food recipes are prepared. Of which I was fascinated by chapter 9, corresponding to the month of September "chocolate and rosca de reyes".

I recommend reading this book, it is a romantic novel where love, sadness, poetry, smells and history of Tita and Pedro will make you get excited.

It is extremely interesting and it captures the magical realism in all its splendor, it is evident with Tita's life, food and cooking. It all comes together to create the supernatural world of the book.

I am fascinated by chapter 3 of the book when Tita prepares the delicious dish of quail in rose petals:

"On the other hand, something strange happened to Gertrudis. It seemed that the food she was eating produced in her an aphrodisiac effect..."

The name of the book alludes to a Mexican saying, "Como agua para chocolate" (Like water for chocolate), which means that someone is upset. Also when the chocolate is about to boil. Wuao, and the story of Tita and Pedro is totally hot, past the boiling point.

It was published in 1989. It was set during the Mexican Revolution in the town of Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico. It has been translated into more than 30 languages.
