To be completely honest, I never imagined I would find myself reading anything that had to do with science or computing in university. I came to the University of Uyo to study History and International Studies because I love stories, politics, culture, and understanding how past events shape our present. I didn’t come here to talk about atoms, circuits, or internet networks. But GST 122 changed that plan. Like it or not, it was a compulsory course for all of us, no matter our department. So just like every other student, I had to read Fundamentals of Science and Computing.
The first time I flipped through the book, I felt lost. Words like scientific method and binary digits stared back at me like I was reading a foreign language. I won’t lie, I groaned and even questioned why an art student like me had to deal with all this. But I kept reading. And gradually, I started to understand that this book wasn’t just about science in the lab or computer programming. It was actually about understanding how science and technology are part of everything around us.
The early chapters talked about what science is, the different branches, and how science has contributed to agriculture, healthcare, transportation, and communication. At first, I thought the book had nothing to do with my course. But then I remembered how industrialization transformed societies. As a history student, I could see how scientific discoveries shaped human development over time. So in a way, the book connected with what I study, just not in the way I expected.
The computing part, on the other hand, felt more challenging. I won’t pretend that I suddenly became good at understanding technical stuff. When I saw terms like input devices, RAM, software applications, and data processing, I honestly wanted to close the book. But to be fair, the authors really tried to explain things in a simple and relatable way. They used examples from everyday life and brought the concepts down to a level that even someone like me could understand with a little patience.
I particularly liked the parts that talked about how technology is used in our daily lives. Things like e-learning, mobile banking, online shopping, social media, and even virtual classrooms. It made me realize that technology is no longer something you can ignore, even if you are not in a tech-related field. The truth is, without basic knowledge of how these systems work, you will struggle to navigate modern life.
There were still sections of the book that felt like they were written for science students. Some of the explanations were too technical and I had to use Google several times just to get what the authors were saying. But despite that, I respect the effort they made to speak to a broad audience. The book didn’t assume we were all already familiar with these topics. It tried to carry everyone along, even those of us from completely different academic backgrounds.
One thing I truly appreciated was how they used Nigerian examples. They talked about real situations and problems we face here, not just foreign examples that don’t really relate to our environment. That helped a lot. It made the book feel more connected to reality and less like a theoretical textbook written for another country.
In the end, I still wouldn’t call Fundamentals of Science and Computing an enjoyable read. It was more like something I had to do, not something I wanted to do. But I can’t deny that I learned a lot from it. It showed me that science and computing are not just for certain types of students. They affect everyone, and we all need at least a basic understanding to keep up with the world we live in.
So no, I didn’t fall in love with the book. And I’m definitely not an expert in science now. But I walked away from it with more knowledge and a better appreciation of the role of technology in my life. And for that reason, I believe the book fulfilled its purpose.
Fundamentals of Science and Computing.
Para ser completamente sincero, jamás pensé que iba a estar leyendo un libro sobre ciencia o computación en la universidad. Yo vine a la Universidad de Uyo a estudiar Historia y Estudios Internacionales porque me interesan los eventos del pasado, la política, las culturas y cómo todo eso influye en el presente. No vine aquí para aprender sobre energía, circuitos o redes de computadoras. Pero luego llegó GST 122. Nos tocó a todos sin importar la carrera. Así que como cualquier otro estudiante, tuve que leer el libro Fundamentals of Science and Computing.
La primera vez que lo abrí me sentí completamente perdido. Vi palabras como método científico y dígitos binarios y pensé que estaba leyendo otro idioma. No voy a mentir, me quejé bastante y no entendía por qué un estudiante de artes tenía que lidiar con eso. Pero seguí leyendo. Poco a poco, me fui dando cuenta de que el libro no solo trataba de cosas de laboratorio o programación. Lo que quería era mostrar cómo la ciencia y la tecnología están en todo lo que nos rodea.
Los primeros capítulos hablaban de qué es la ciencia, sus ramas y cómo ha influido en la agricultura, la salud, el transporte y la comunicación. Al principio sentí que eso no tenía nada que ver conmigo, pero luego recordé cómo la industrialización transformó las sociedades. Como estudiante de historia, pude ver que muchos momentos clave del pasado se explican mejor si entendemos el contexto científico de la época. Así que el libro sí tenía algo que ver con mi carrera, solo que de forma indirecta.
La parte de computación fue más complicada. No voy a fingir que entendí todo de inmediato. Cuando empecé a leer sobre dispositivos de entrada, memoria RAM y procesamiento de datos, me dieron ganas de cerrar el libro. Pero para ser justo, los autores hicieron un buen trabajo explicando las cosas de forma sencilla. Usaron ejemplos de la vida diaria y trataron de que los conceptos fueran lo más claros posible, incluso para los que no tenemos experiencia en ese tema.
Una parte que me gustó fue cuando explicaron cómo la tecnología forma parte de nuestras actividades cotidianas. Hablaron de educación virtual, banca en línea, redes sociales y clases digitales. Ahí me di cuenta de que aunque yo estudie historia, la tecnología sigue afectando mi vida todos los días. No es algo que podamos ignorar. Hoy en día, saber un poco de computación es casi tan importante como saber leer o escribir.
Claro, hubo partes que me costaron mucho. Algunas explicaciones fueron muy técnicas y tuve que buscar varios términos en internet. A veces ni con eso entendía del todo. Pero a pesar de eso, valoro el esfuerzo que hicieron los autores para llegarle a todos los estudiantes. No asumieron que ya sabíamos todo. Más bien, intentaron llevarnos de la mano desde lo básico.
Algo que también me gustó fue que usaron ejemplos de Nigeria. No se centraron solo en cosas de Estados Unidos o Europa. Hablaron de problemas y situaciones que conocemos, y eso hizo que el libro se sintiera más real. Se notaba que fue escrito pensando en nosotros.
Al final, no puedo decir que disfruté el libro, pero sí puedo decir que aprendí algo útil
