Garry and Jay's The One Thing talks about the importance of doing the one thing that matters most to you, focusing on that one thing with all your might. I recently started reading Part 1 of the book, which discusses the lies that end up misleading people in their pursuit of the one thing. What has shocked me most so far in this section is the topic on life discipline, where the author begins by saying that discipline is a lie, which was a big surprise.
After all, in any book or video about personal development, you hear discipline mentioned as a fundamental aspect. However, soon after, everything starts to make sense when the author mentions ROUTINE! Curious? Come learn all about Routine and Discipline from Garry and Jay's perspective!

Discipline isn't important?
The chapter on disciplined living begins with the following quote from Leo Babauta: "One of the predominant myths of our culture is self-discipline." From this point on, any reader of personal development content would be surprised, but the author goes on to say that it's a lie for a disciplined person to be successful. I found this part quite strange, but I kept reading to find out why he defends this view.
Reading the entire chapter, it becomes clear that, for the author, discipline is part of something larger called ROUTINE. The comparison is that discipline is the necessary initial push to allow time for a habit to form and for activities that previously required some effort to do to begin with to become second nature. In the authors' view, people who appear to be disciplined are actually people who, with a lot of time and dedication, have managed to form several beneficial habits that help them achieve their goals by doing the right thing.
How to create a habit?
As seen previously, to achieve success you need to do the right thing. But what would that be? So to create a successful habit, the first step is to map out all the activities that are necessary, all the steps, to achieve your goal. After that, it's important that you be disciplined for 66 days, which studies suggest is the average amount of time needed to form a new habit. Depending on your commitment, this habit could emerge as early as 18 visits or take as long as 254. This is the range identified for acquiring a new habit, with 66 days being the average.
An interesting discovery by researchers Megan Oaten and Ken Cheng, which the book discusses in the chapter on discipline, is a possible halo effect in habit formation. What could this halo effect be? Students who created a positive habit experienced a series of beneficial effects, such as less stress, less impulse buying, and more. This indicates that besides making tasks easier, the habit has additional positive effects that help people excel.

A partir disso, qualquer leitor de conteúdos de desenvolvimento pessoal já ficaria surpreso, mas o autor continua, falando que é uma mentida uma pessoa disciplinada ser bem sucedida. Nessa parte eu já achei super estranho, mas continuei lendo para descobrir o porque dele defender essa visão.
Ao ler o capítulo inteiro fica claro, que para o autor a disciplina é parte de algo maior chamado ROTINA. A comparação feita é que disciplina é a arrancada necessária no começo até dar tempo para o hábito ser formado e as atividades que antes exigiam um certo esforço para serem feitas no início, agora se tornarem naturais. Na visão dos autores, uma pessoa que aparenta ser disciplinada, na verdade são pessoas que conseguiram com muito tempo e dedicação, formar diversos hábitos benéficos que ajudam a chegar no seu objetivo, fazendo a coisa certa.
Como criar um hábito?
Como visto anteriormente, para alcançar o sucesso é necessário fazer a coisa certa. Mas o que seria ela? Então para criar um hábito de sucesso, o primeiro passo é mapear todas as atividades que são necessárias, todos os passos, para alcançar o seu objetivo. Depois disso, é importante que você seja disciplinado por 66 dias, prazo que os estudos sugerem ser em média, necessário para formar um novo hábito. Dependendo do seu empenho, esse hábito pode surgir mais cedo, em 18 idas ou levar o maior tempo de 254. Esse é o range identificado para adquirir um novo hábito, com 66 dias sendo a média.
Uma descoberta interessante dos pesquisadores Megan Oaten e Ken Cheng que o livro divulga no capítulo de disciplina é um possível efeito de halo na criação de hábitos. O que seria esse efeito halo?
