A few days ago I saw a movie that I reviewed and the plot of it made me remember a book I read years ago, I remember that while the book was being written I was anxiously waiting for its completion to buy it, not because the author was famous as a writer, but she was known at that time as a journalist and her book narrates a real-life case that was a major criminal event in my country Venezuela and that shocked public opinion.

Ybeyise Pacheco is a Venezuelan journalist who graduated from the Central University of Venezuela, a writer specializing in crime stories. She was born in 1961 and currently resides in the United States.

She practiced journalism in several press networks and also worked in the television channel RCTV closed by former President Hugo Chavez, during her professional practice she was awarded the National Journalism Award, then she ventured into literature creating several books titled: under the cassock (2006), the ignored cry (2012), criminal insane (2014), the dolls of the crown (2017) and the book that today I come to review Blood on the Divan (2010).

Currently, she is active in publishing her opinions on social networks.

As I mentioned before Sangre en el diván presents us with the real events behind the case of the murder of Roxana Vargas at the hands of the renowned doctor Edmundo Chirinos, a story whose pages gradually reveal the cynical and ruthless personality of a murderer and rapist who uses the image of a scholar of medicine and political power to hide his evil. The reading is very precise and does not bore you, Ibeyise Pacheco manages to capture the madness of this gentleman in a way that takes your breath away.

The book begins with the narration of what would be the last day of life of Roxana Vargas (RIP), she was a 19 year old girl from the Venezuelan plains that in her adolescence had suffered from eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia, having overcome her disorder she began to study social communication at the Central University of Venezuela in Caracas, capital of the country, She lived with her sister and was a student with merits, however, her performance was affected by her low self-esteem that generated personal conflicts, the young girl fell in love with a classmate, but was not reciprocated which made her fall into depression and return to bulimia, gaining weight quickly and uncontrollably.

Her mother, worried because her other daughter had told her that her sister Roxana was cutting her wrists, moved to Caracas to take her to a psychiatrist who had been her doctor years ago, helping her to overcome a postpartum depression. He was a very famous doctor and an outstanding professional, once the doctor diagnosed her they started the treatment even though they were a family of scarce economic resources, the young woman was studying because she had a scholarship and her mother would pay for her treatment in parts.

According to this evaluation, Roxana suffered from mild schizophrenia and depression, so he recommended sleep therapy in the same clinic owned by the doctor.

He was born in 1935 in Venezuela, surgeon doctor, licensed in psychology, doctor in sciences, degrees obtained at the Central University of Venezuela, master in Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Psychology, from the University of London, Cambridge, Oxford (England), Marseille (France), Queens College in New York. Founder of the College of Psychologists in Venezuela and rector of the Central University of Venezuela, in addition to being the author of more than 700 books, he has also been involved in politics, being a member of the National Assembly in 1999 and a presidential candidate in 1988. He was a special guest in several national and international television programs and the psychiatrist of three former Venezuelan Presidents: Jaime Lusinchi, Rafael Caldera and Hugo Rafael Chávez, including Chávez' wife.

Blood on the Divan tells what the authorities tell the media and the interviews that the author herself conducts with those involved including Dr. Edmundo, it turns out that Roxana on her last day of life was sharing with her best friend doing college work that day did not return home and her sister informed her mother about the disappearance, this young woman was a quiet and responsible woman who was not used to arrive at late hours and always said where she was, so her mother upon learning moved to the city and places the complaint in the investigative bodies. Three days later in some bushes inside a park some passers-by discovered the decomposed remains of a woman who was half-naked and with her head smashed, a body that was later recognized by her sister.

When they began the investigations they realized that the victim's cell phone had received countless calls from a local number of the clinic of Dr. Edmundo Chirinos, and it was at that moment when Roxana's mother was filled with courage and decided to break the silence and tell the bitter experience that her daughter had suffered, anyway there was nothing left to lose. Her daughter after being diagnosed with depression and schizophrenia received 5 therapies called sleep cures, the young girl had been sedated several times until in one of them it seems that she did not receive the right dose to make her sleep deeply and woke up earlier than expected, surprising the doctor in the middle of the therapy.

She was half naked and on top of her was the doctor with his fingers inside her vagina, she goes into shock and struggles a little with the doctor while he tells her that it was part of the therapy, she had never had sex in her 19 years, days later she tells her mother who takes her to a gynecologist revealing that she is still a virgin, The indignant mother decided not to denounce, since there was no evidence of a complete rape and Edmundo Chirinos was a famous and powerful person at that time, without economic resources no one would believe her version.

But her daughter was already dead, so she told and began to uncover the whole story, after this rape event, the mother tells that she took her to her town and there with another psychologist was able to restore the health of her daughter, remember that she suffered from eating disorders and depression, months later the young woman returned to the capital to finish her studies, she was about to graduate and began to do internships in a television channel RCTV that were in opposition to the government.

Doctor Edmundo Chirinos when he found out about her return began to persuade her and between them a sentimental and sexual relationship began in secret, what the doctor did not know is that Roxana wrote everything she lived in a diary in an explicit and detailed way, there is the story of her first sexual relationship, she was 19 years old and the doctor was 74 years old, This diary is used as one of the incriminating evidence in the case, but it only revealed that they had been intimate and the harassment of which she had been a victim, she was of age and apparently there was no crime, but it served to generate a search warrant to the doctor's residence and the clinic finding other evidence against him.

In the clinic they found a tendril that belonged to Roxana and was the one missing when she was found, in addition to large blood stains that were evident with the chemical luminol and in his residence they found lots of photos of naked and sedated women, many since he started in the army of medicine.

Roxana's autopsy revealed that she had been hit repeatedly in the head, but her cause of death was cerebral hemorrhage and had she received help she would have been saved. At the time of this event the couple had already separated, Roxana had ended the relationship because of what is written in her diary and she was working at the television station. Edmundo Chirinos was never arrested during the investigation process, he insisted on his innocence and gave statements showing total calm.

In 2010 Edmundo Chirinos was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of Roxana Vargas, but in 2012 he was sentenced to house arrest due to his advanced age. This man died in 2013 due to a cerebrovascular accident.

While researching the book to make this summary I discovered that from this story were created plays, television series produced by the Univision network titled Demente criminal and a movie titled El psiquiatra (The psychiatrist).

I do not own images of the book because after reading it I changed it for another work. 🥴

I recommend it if you are one of those who like this genre, in this summary obviate many descriptive elements that for sure in the book you will enjoy.

Hace unos días vi una película que reseñe y la trama de la misma me hizo recordar un libro que leí hace años, recuerdo que mientras se escribía el libro yo esperaba ansiosa su culminación para comprarlo, no porque la autora fuera famosa como escritora, sino que ella era conocida en esa época como periodista y su libro narra un caso de la vida real que fue un suceso criminal importante en mi país Venezuela y que conmocionó la opinión pública.

Ybeyise Pacheco es una periodista venezolana egresada de la universidad Central de Venezuela, escritora especialista en la fuente de sucesos, nació en 1961 y actualmente reside en los Estados Unidos.

Ejerció el periodismo en varias cadenas de presa y también trabajó en el canal de televisión RCTV cerrado por el expresidente Hugo Chávez, durante su ejercicio profesional fue galardonada con el premio Nacional de periodismo, luego incursionó en la literatura creando varios libros titulados: bajo la sotana (2006), el grito ignorado (2012), demente criminal (2014), las muñecas de la corona (2017) y el libro que hoy vengo a reseñar Sangre en el Diván (2010).

Actualmente, se mantiene activa publicando sus opiniones en las redes sociales.

Como mencioné anteriormente Sangre en el diván nos presenta los sucesos reales detrás del caso del asesinato de Roxana Vargas a manos del reconocido doctor Edmundo Chirinos, una historia cuyas páginas poco a poco revela la cínica y despiadada personalidad de un asesino y violador que utiliza la imagen de un erudito de la medicina y del poder político para ocultar su maldad. La lectura es muy precisa y no te aburre, Ibeyise Pacheco logra plasmar la locura de este señor de manera que te llega a quitar el aliento.

El libro comienza con la narración de lo que sería el último día de vida de Roxana Vargas (QEPD), ella era una joven de 19 años oriunda de los llanos venezolanos que en su adolescencia había sufrido de desórdenes alimenticios como bulimia y anorexia, habiendo superado su trastorno empezó a estudiar comunicación social en la universidad Central de Venezuela en Caracas capital del país, vivía con su hermana y era una estudiante con méritos, sin embargo, su desempeño se veía afectado por su baja autoestima que le generaron conflictos personales, la joven se enamoró de un compañero de clases, pero no era correspondida lo que le hizo caer en depresión y volver a la bulimia aumentando de peso de forma rápida y descontrolada.

Su mamá preocupada porque su otra hija le había comentado que su hermana Roxana se estaba haciendo cortadas en sus muñecas, se traslada a Caracas para llevarla a un psiquiatra que había sido su doctor hace años ayudándola a superar una depresión postparto. Era un médico muy famoso y destacado profesional, una vez que el doctor la diagnosticó empezaron el tratamiento a pesar de que era una familia de escasos recursos económicos, la joven estudiaba porque tenía una beca y la madre pagaría por partes su tratamiento.

Según esta evaluación, Roxana sufría de una esquizofrenia leve y depresión, por lo que recomendó hacer terapias de sueño en la misma clínica que era propiedad del doctor.

Nació en 1935 en Venezuela, médico cirujano, licenciado en psicología, doctor en ciencias, títulos obtenidos en la Universidad Central de Venezuela, magíster en Neuropsiquiatría y Psicología Clínica, de la Universidad de Londres, Cambridge, Oxford (Inglaterra), Marsella (Francia), Queens College en Nueva York. Fundador del colegio de psicólogos en Venezuela y rector de la universidad Central de Venezuela, además de ser autor de más de 700 libros también incursionó en la política siendo diputado de la Asamblea Nacional en 1999 y candidato presidencial en 1988. Fue invitado especial en varios programas de televisión nacionales e internacionales y el psiquiatra de tres expresidentes de Venezuela como: Jaime Lusinchi, Rafael Caldera y Hugo Rafael Chávez incluyendo la esposa de Chávez.

Sangre en el Diván relata lo que las autoridades le dicen a los medios de comunicación y las entrevistas que la misma autora realiza a los involucrados incluyendo al doctor Edmundo, resulta que Roxana en su último día de vida estuvo compartiendo con su mejor amigo realizando trabajos de la universidad ese día no regresó a casa y su hermana informó a su mamá sobre la desaparición, esta joven era una mujer tranquila y responsable que no acostumbraba a llegar a altas horas y siempre decía donde se encontraba, por lo que su mamá al enterarse se trasladó a la ciudad y coloca la denuncia en los cuerpos de investigación. Tres días después en unos matorrales dentro de un parque unos transeúntes descubren los restos ya descompuestos de una mujer que estaba semidesnuda y con la cabeza destrozada, cuerpo que más adelante es reconocido por la hermana.

Cuando inician las averiguaciones se percatan que el celular de la víctima había recibido innumerables llamadas de un número local de la clínica del doctor Edmundo Chirinos, y es en ese momento cuando la mamá de Roxana se llena de valor y decide romper el silencio y contar la amarga experiencia que había sufrido su hija, de todas formas ya no había nada que perder. Su hija después de ser diagnosticada de depresión y esquizofrenia recibió 5 terapias denominadas curas de sueño, la joven había sido sedada en varias oportunidades hasta que en una de ellas parece que no recibió la dosis adecuada que la hiciera dormir profundamente y despertó antes de lo esperado sorprendiendo al doctor en plena terapia.

Ella se encontraba semidesnuda y encima de ella estaba el doctor con sus dedos dentro de su vagina, ella entra en shock forcejea un poco con el doctor mientras esté le dice que era parte de la terapia, ella nunca había tenido relaciones sexuales en sus 19 años, días después le cuenta a su mamá quien la lleva a un ginecólogo revelando que ella sigue siendo virgen, pero sí presentaba rasgos de fricciones forzadas, la mamá indignada decide no denunciar, ya que no había evidencia de una violación completa además que Edmundo Chirinos era una persona famosa y poderosa en ese momento, sin recursos económicos nadie creería su versión.

Pero su hija ya estaba muerta, así que contó y se empezó a destapar toda la historia, después de este evento de violación, cuenta la madre que se la llevó a su pueblo y allí con otro psicólogo pudo restaurar la salud de su hija, recuerden que sufría de desórdenes alimenticios y depresión, meses después la joven vuelve a la capital para terminar sus estudios, estaba por graduarse y comienza hacer las pasantías en un canal de televisión RCTV que hacían oposición al gobierno.

El doctor Edmundo Chirinos al enterarse de su regreso comenzó a persuadirla y entre ellos se inició una relación sentimental y sexual en secreto, lo que el doctor no sabía es que Roxana escribía todo lo que vivía en un diario de forma explícita y detallada, allí está el relato de su primera relación sexual ella de 19 años y el doctor de 74 años, este diario es usado como una de las pruebas incriminatorias en el caso, pero solo revelaba que habían tenido intimidad y el acoso del que había sido víctima, ella era mayor de edad y aparentemente no había crimen, pero sirvió para generar una orden de allanamiento a la residencia del doctor y a la clínica encontrando otras evidencias en su contra.

En la clínica encontraron un zarcillo que era de Roxana y era el que le faltaba cuando la encontraron, además de grandes manchas de sangre que fueron evidentes con el químico luminol y en su residencia encontraron cantidades de fotos de mujeres desnudas y sedadas, muchas desde que se inició en el ejército de la medicina.

La autopsia de Roxana reveló que ella había sido golpeada repetidas veces en la cabeza, pero su causa de muerte fue por hemorragia cerebral y de haber recibido ayuda se hubiera salvado. Cuando sucedió este suceso ya la pareja se había separado, Roxana había terminado la relación por lo que aparece escrito en su diario y ella estaba trabajando en el canal de televisión. Edmundo Chirinos nunca fue detenido mientras hacían el proceso de investigación, él insistía en su inocencia y daba declaraciones mostrando una calma total.

En el año 2010 Edmundo Chirinos fue condenado a 20 años de cárcel por el asesinato de Roxana Vargas, pero en el 2012 le asignaron casa por cárcel por su edad avanzada. Este hombre falleció en el año 2013 por un accidente cerebro vascular.

Mientras realizaba la investigación del libro para hacer este resumen descubrí que a partir de esta historia fueron creadas obras de teatro, serie de televisión producida por la cadena Univisión titulada Demente criminal y una película titulada El psiquiatra.
