Perhaps Stephen Hawking's most famous book is A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes (1988), a publishing phenomenon that topped the main sales charts for years and marked a milestone in popular science literature. But the book I come to recommend today, first published in 2001 under the title The Universe in a Nutshell, is a real gem destined to set a trend in the popularization of scientific knowledge to the great majority, for its brilliant ability to present the advances of science in an understandable, witty and easily accessible language, sparing, as far as possible, the complicated mathematics behind the main theories on which the understanding of the Universe is based today. Abordando la comprensión del Universo desde una perspectiva histórica e integral, en la que se parte de La Historia de la Relatividad y La forma del Tiempo (capítulos 1 y 2, respectivamente) hasta llegar a los campos más activos de la investigación actual, como el complejo desarrollo de la biología y la electrónica o los “universos membrana”, el libro puede leerse cómodamente según las recomendaciones iniciales del autor: comenzando linealmente con los dos primeros capítulos como un tronco desde el cual brotan los demás, como ramas independientes entre sí. Es decir, que después de leer los capítulos uno y dos, el lector podrá establecer el orden de lectura de los cinco restantes, según sus intereses, curiosidad u orden de prioridades.
Una vez establecidas las bases históricas y teóricas de sus premisas, el astrofísico más famoso de nuestro siglo inicia el tercer capítulo de su libro citando a Shakespeare: “Podría estar encerrado en una cáscara de nuez y sentirme rey de un espacio infinito”. Sobre la frase, Hawking plantea lo siguiente: “Quizás Hamlet quería decir que a pesar de que los humanos estemos físicamente muy limitados, nuestras mentes pueden explorar audazmente todo el universo y llegar donde los protagonistas de Star Trek temerían ir, si las pesadillas nos lo permiten”. A partir de allí, al autor va abriendo puertas y ventanas a muchas y muy interesantes preguntas: ¿Cómo se originó el Universo? ¿Es posible viajar en el tiempo? ¿Cuál es la forma del tiempo? ¿Qué son los agujeros negros? ¿Es posible predecir el futuro? ¿Vivimos en una membrana o solo somos hologramas? ¿Podría una civilización avanzada retroceder en el tiempo y cambiar el pasado? ¿Será nuestro futuro como Star Treck? Preguntas que pueden parecer infantiles, incluso tontas, pero que, al intentar darle respuesta, hallamos el camino hacia la expansión de las fronteras del conocimiento humano.
Approaching the understanding of the Universe from a historical and integral perspective, starting from The History of Relativity and The Shape of Time (chapters 1 and 2, respectively) to the most active fields of current research, such as the complex development of biology and electronics or the "membrane universes", the book can be read comfortably according to the author's initial recommendations: starting linearly with the first two chapters as a trunk from which the others sprout, as branches independent of each other. That is to say, after reading chapters one and two, the reader can establish the reading order of the remaining five, according to his or her interests, curiosity or order of priorities.
Once the historical and theoretical bases of his premises have been established, the most famous astrophysicist of our century begins the third chapter of his book by quoting Shakespeare: "I could be shut up in a nutshell and feel myself king of infinite space". Regarding the phrase, Hawking states the following: "Perhaps Hamlet meant that although we humans are physically very limited, our minds can boldly explore the entire universe and go where the protagonists of Star Trek would fear to go, if nightmares allow us to do so". From there, the author opens doors and windows to many interesting questions: How did the Universe originate? Is time travel possible? What is the shape of time? What are black holes? Is it possible to predict the future? Do we live in a membrane or are we just holograms? Could an advanced civilization go back in time and change the past? Will our future be like Star Trek? Questions that may seem childish, even silly, but which, when we try to answer them, we find the way to the expansion of the frontiers of human knowledge.
Soy de los que creen que en la obra de Nietzsche, Einstein y Freud se halla el motor y la semilla de toda la producción artística, científica y filosófica del convulso siglo XX, así sea por oposición a sus postulados. Del mismo modo creo que, salvando las distancias y reconociendo los matices, en el Pensamiento Complejo de Edgar Morin, la Geometría Fractal de Mandelbrot y los teoremas sobre las singularidades espaciotemporales de Hawking-Penrose, están las bases de la nueva estética, ética y cosmovisión llamada a superar el postmodernismo, que parece haber nacido viejo sobre las ruinas de la decepción positivista.
Por eso creo que es importante leer a Hawking, en especial este libro, con el que intenta acercarnos de una manera sencilla a las complejidades del Universo desde su origen hasta hoy, con su particular y genial punto de vista. Es una obra de importancia capital que debería ser leída por ingenieros y poetas, por filósofos y médicos, campesinos y marineros, historiadores y (sobretodo) por educadores de todas las áreas. En ella se demuestra que lo complejo no es sinónimo de complicación y nos abre las puertas a una realidad en la que el único pecado original es la pretensión de simpleza.
I am one of those who believe that in the work of Nietzsche, Einstein and Freud is the engine and the seed of all artistic, scientific and philosophical production of the convulsive twentieth century, even if it is in opposition to their postulates. In the same way, I believe that, saving the distances and recognizing the nuances, in Edgar Morin's Complex Thought, Mandelbrot's Fractal Geometry and Hawking-Penrose's theorems on space-time singularities, are the bases of the new aesthetics, ethics and cosmovision called to overcome postmodernism, which seems to have been born old on the ruins of positivist disappointment.
That is why I think it is important to read Hawking, especially this book, with which he tries to approach us in a simple way to the complexities of the Universe from its origin until today, with his particular and brilliant point of view. It is a work of capital importance that should be read by engineers and poets, philosophers and doctors, farmers and sailors, historians and (above all) educators of all areas. It shows that complexity is not synonymous with complication and opens the doors to a reality in which the only original sin is the pretension of simplicity.
