Unfortunately, as expected, the EU has capitulated.
It is pathetic.
Rather than choosing a path of short to midterm pain, they have agreed to short term stability and long term pain. Typical behaviour of today's culture, isn't it? Instant gratification mentality, rather than investing into the gains of delayed gratification. Dealing with short-term hardship just doesn't seem to be in the vocabulary and many people would rather be slaves to security, than brave the uncertainty.
Sad.
It is just another attempt to kick the can of inevitability down the road, rather than taking responsibility into hand and doing what is necessary to prepare for the future. Instead of breaking free from US control and becoming a united base for innovation and social growth, the EU has tied itself into the binds of slavery for the foreseeable future, supporting the antithesis of what the EU has worked for over the years - albeit highly imperfectly. This deal will put more pressure on dismantling the EU, because not many countries agree with the decision so far.
Some see that is a good thing, but is it?
I personally don't think so at this stage. Because I think nationalism is a pretty fucking stupid mentality if improvement in wellbeing and peace are the goals. All of this border shit is pretty fucking stupid in my opinion. However, we are a pretty fucking stupid species that would rather infight than build better together. We'd rather subscribe to fantasy, fallacy and arbitrary metrics that make us feel better about ourselves, even as doing so increases our suffering.
The entire system of governance, mas well as the entire system of the economy needs to be changed, and this was the opportunity to get the ball rolling. Instead, we have again been set back further, trying to cling onto the tattered fragments of what we already know doesn't fucking work. We keep on pissing into the fuel tank, expecting the car to start.
The people I have talked to are split on the decision to make this deal, because some favour stability at any cost, and some know that the promise of stability is meaningless. Give an inch, and lose a mile. And there is far more than an inch given, and it will come back to haunt the EU. And no, it isn't all roses for the US, because as normal, it will be the consumer that is stuck with the bill, in what is already an environment of discontent.
All this is about money, not wellbeing though.
As long as the trillion dollar companies keep making the billionaires richer, all is good. All of this gives more opportunity to find efficiencies to lower the need for human workers to maximise profits. And because those numbers will go up and the rich get richer, the economy is a roaring success and everyone is happy. Well except all of those with rising costs of living, decreased work opportunity, and shrinking real wages.
Lucky that is only a small number of people...
What could possibly go wrong with a mass of disgruntled and suffering humans?
