But the Bitcoin blockchain is made to be immutable, which means its records are forever and cannot be changed.
Once a deal is checked and added to the chain, it's locked in place by super strong secret codes.
To change an old deal, someone would have to rewrite every single block that came after it.
This would take a crazy amount of computer power, making it almost impossible.

Shared Everywhere: Your bank's notebook is on one main computer, controlled by the bank.

The Bitcoin blockchain is distributed, which means it's shared everywhere. Thousands of exact copies of its notebook are kept on computers (called "nodes") all over the world.
When a new deal happens, every copy gets updated at the same time. This means there's no single weak spot, and no one person or group is in charge.

Every deal is written down on the public blockchain.

Person-to-Person CashWhen you send money online with a bank or a payment app, you're not really sending the actual money.
You're sending a message—like a promise to pay—that your bank will sort out with another bank later.
The banks are like trusted helpers that stand between you and the person you're paying.

Bitcoin works differently.

With Bitcoin, the money and the message are the same thing.

This makes Bitcoin a deflationary asset, meaning it tends to become more valuable over time because there's less of it.
Think about this compared to regular money.
Governments can—and do—print more money to pay off debts or make the economy better.
This process, called inflation, makes the money worth less over time.
The dollar in your pocket buys less today than it did ten years ago; a loaf of bread that used to cost 25 cents now costs over $2.00.
When the economy is in trouble, printing a lot of money quickly can lead to high inflation, which makes the savings of regular people lose their value.
Rich people have always used things like houses and gold to protect their money from inflation.
Because these things are rare, their value usually goes up as the value of regular money goes down.
Bitcoin works the same way, but in the digital world.
It's often called "digital gold" because its proven rarity is built right into its computer code.
While Bitcoin's price goes up and down a lot, its long-term performance has been amazing.
Over the last ten years, it has done much better than big stock markets.
As something made to gain value against money that loses value due to inflation, it has shown to be a fantastic tool for growing and keeping wealth over time.
This mix of a safe, open record, a way to pay without asking permission, and a rare, independent way to save value is what makes Bitcoin a truly amazing invention.
