Right from my early years, I've always been fond of animals. I had to wait for my dad to finish building our house as far back as 1997 before I finally owned my pet. I couldn't have raised any in a rented apartment and I preferred to have it in a place I call 'ours'.
While the house was close to completion, I got two wonderful dogs called Major and Snowball. My elder brother named them because he was fascinated by George Orwell's "Animal Farm". I love the name too and after they gave birth, I named the two puppies Rex and Cherry before we finally got an extra one that I named Tiger. I had 5 dogs then and I tried to make up for the years I wasn't able to have one, so I went all out hahahaha.
I've always been a dog lover and I had rabbits back then too. I had the Blue Beveren breed which I bought from my schoolmate then before I bought another breed called the Newzealand White. I love the Blue Beveren breed for the calmness and the Newzealand White for the red eyes and white furs.
I've always loved animals and you can call it love at first sight because I like feeling responsible for things. It's not surprising why they called dogs to be man's best friend because they are loyal to a fault. I love animals because I believe they are understanding and they are loyal. They never forget a face and even when I went to a higher institution, they are always excited to see me come back. I can remember when I went for my service year for a whole year, I got back and all of them were jumping, running and hovering around me. I felt it that day and it was a wonderful feeling.
I love animals also because I believe they listen. Humans are the most complex to deal with despite stating what you don't want them to do, they still do what they like. It's not the same with animals. I taught my dogs how to stay in the cage and never defecate in their house. A funny incident happened one day... We have tenants, so I know some of them might not be dog lovers especially knowing they have little children. We always lock the dogs up in the morning and then let them let loose by 6 pm. They would have been fed in between before 6 pm, even the tenants as they throw food to them from a distance 🤣😂.
One day, I lost track of time and I didn't open the cage until 5 minutes past 6 as I was rushing downstairs to open them, I noticed Major already managed to find a pocket of space to climb over the metal door and he ran outside. I got downstairs only to see him coming back into the house. Apparently, he managed to open the entrance gate to the house with his hand, went outside, defecated and then came back inside. What thrilled me most was the fact that after doing that, he came in and came to meet me at their house with a 'sober' face. He knew he broke the 'law' but can you blame the poor dog since I was late?
It's how you train them to be, that's how they are. They are so easy to train and that's why I love dogs. Sadly, where I am staying presently, I don't have any here but I still have 2 in my dad's house and I always enjoy going back home even though these ones hardly know me, they have registered my face and it delights me. I would surely get another set when I can also build a house of my own. I would go big and have 7 of them and recycle those names again; Major, Snowball, Tiger, Rex, Cherry, Smart and Simba.
It pains me that most people don't regard animals here in my country. You will see them throw things at dogs to scare them away but only a few treat dogs as a big deal or any other kind of pet and that makes me happy because all hope isn't lost. I don't know if it's a cultural thing but we saw how a footballer; Kurt Zouma got the heat from people because of how badly he treated his cat. I know of a YouTube channel that is never the same again because she spitted on her dog. I believe if we are better humans, then we can learn to treat animals with respect but currently, not many people are doing so well in that department in my country; Nigeria.
While growing up we have been made to believe that cats belong to the witches and anyone fond of cats is looked upon differently and that's why I've never been a fan of cats but it took me a long time to finally erase this thought but still, I wouldn't own a cat 😂😂🤣. It has become a taboo of some sort in my country and they don't see cats as good luck pets but rather as something dark.
Dogs have always been my favourite and I can't wait to have them again.
Thank you for your time.
