This post and these videos are not for beginning photographers... this is very in depth stuff... be warned. But also if you really want to understand some of these concepts or some of the actions I do then let me know and maybe in Part 4 I'll go over some of it a bit more.
MY JOURNEY
In part one i explained my issues moving from Nikon to Sony and how i grew to love and see the world in a bright vivid way that was best shown through Nikon colors... but I love the Tech sony has and it was time to move on... but that requires me to put the time and effort to find a way to get back to the colors i loved so much ... but with a sensor that apparently sees the world differently and has some funky color results on default...
Aka nikon worked on default for me... i chose vivid in Lightroom and it interpreted colors the way I love color. Done.
After a couple weeks of trial and error it is clear no Sony default will work for me... it's time to go BEYOND DEFAULT... way beyond.
PART 3 - 30 minutes of in depth color manipulation
- Using 24 color charts
- Using Adobe DNG profile editor
- Importing profiles into Lightroom
- Testing
- More testing in different lighting situations
This video represents just the start of today's hours of intense scientific testing of different GAMMAS allowed by sony.
Yes I describe how gamma settings do indeed impact colors and lighting of a RAW file. I'm not the first to know this and show this but I recreate the study to show you it's for sure a thing.
I start with the STILL aka "No-Profile" gamma. I get too much green for my liking and I could go the direction @caseygrimley went when i talked with him... as shown in this video below
PART 2 - Casey gives tips
This video is a bunch of tips for how he handled his issues with Sony Camera color
PART 4 - What's to come
So now I'm going to go through and make COLOR PROFILES for most if not all 13 of the gammas i tested and perhaps a profile for each of the 3 lighting situations.
I'm going to see which ones seem to have the best impact on my pictures.
Then i'm going to invite someone to do some pictures later today and photograph them with and mostly without the 24 color chart. I'll do this in a few gammas that I think are likely to give me the best result. I would love to find a solution for no sony profile setting (which is the STILL gamma) because when you choose no profile setting on the camera you have a few more options that are great to have. But i'm leaning Hlog3 and Cine2 perhaps working nicely. But perhaps one of the others will surprise me with great color.
YOUR OPINIONS
I know some people like the colors of sony
Some people are very conservative with color
Everyone has eyes that are slightly different than others
I know the way I see things and the way i percieve beauty in color means I like Bright, Powerful colors
PART 1 - The foundational issue
I shared this in previous blog post... BUT... if you want a recap of what is going on
