Why Did The House Of Prayer In Jerusalem Become A Den Of Thieves? (Part 1 of 3) MCGI Topic Review
Matthew 21:13 says;
And said unto them, it is written, My House shall be called the House Of Prayer: But ye have made it a den of thieves.
Christ is quoting from a former scripture where God is speaking about His House being called a House Of Prayer. Jesus cited this scriptural quotation from Isaiah 57:7;
Even them will I bring to my Holy Mountain and make them joyful in my House Of Prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon my altar; for mine House shall be called a House Of Prayer for all people.
And the scriptural verse pops up again in Jeremiah 7:11;
Is this House, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, saith the Lord.
Before it was said by our Lord Jesus Christ, it was prophesied by the prophets. Jesus was sent by God to preach His word hence Jesus' constant reference to the words of God in the old testament.
John 12:49-50;
49: For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, He gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.
50: And I know that His commandment is life everlasting, whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the father said unto me, so I speak.
It all means that the House Of Prayer In Jerusalem, which was the temple of God was turned into a business place by those that are selling doves and lambs etc, because the Jews are offering all these things to the altar for sacrifices, so the businessmen of those days took advantage of that and sold their merchandise inside the temple.
The question now is how did the House Of Prayer become a den of thieves and not a place of prayer anymore?
When Jesus Christ was in Jerusalem, He told the apostles in advance that the temple would be totally destroyed.
Watch out for the Part 2 of this sermon by Bro. Eli Soriano.
