The first step in overcoming a problem is first admitting that you need help. Battles are not meant to be fought alone except in very few cases. The problem with many people is that they convince themselves with the lie that they are in control when in the real sense they aren't. We should be sincere enough to ourselves and humble enough ask for help when it is needed.
The truth is that as humans we can't help ourselves, that's why the Lord sent us the Holy Spirit to help us in our weaknesses. But the Holy Spirit does not impose Himself on anyone. Many people don't receive help from the Holy Spirit not because He is not powerful enough but because they by themselves limit Him.
One of the biggest lie anyone can tell himself is that he doesn't need the help of the Holy Spirit. A lot of people destroyed their lives and even the lives of people around them due to one addiction or the other and it happened that way because they refused to be helped. Asking for help those not make us weak. A lot people view surrender as a form of defeat. But when it comes to the Holy Spirit it is not.
As a matter of fact the Holy Spirit is actually seeking for those who would surrender to Him. Some people may honestly want to seize from an addiction but they find themselves being unable to because they are consumed by it. Trying to help ourselves is like observing self medication which is a very risky thing to do.
2 Corinthians 12:9
And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
When we are weak and have reached the end of our strength, that's when God steps in. The grace of the Lord is sufficient and available to all who are willing to partake of it. The enemy uses addiction to cage people and make them live their lives in guilt but when we turn to the Lord He takes away every burdens and struggles from us.
