It is in the human nature to offend people. There are ways people may have offended us just as we also at one point in life or another have offended other people. Whatever the case may be, God expects us to forgive. Now, forgiveness may be hard especially when the offense committed may be grievous. That is why in order to truly forgive we need divine help.
Before someone approaches us for forgiveness God expects us to have already forgiven the person in our hearts. An unforgiving heart can bring about some limitations to us even as christians.
Matthew 18:21-22;
Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”
Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times but seventy-seven times.
When we have the nature of forgiveness we don't keep a record of how many times we have been offended and we can be able to forgive as many times as possible. When Jesus was teaching His disciples how to pray there was a part of the prayer that talks about God forgiving us our trespasses even as we forgive those who trespass against us also.
If we expect God to forgive us of our trespasses, we likewise should be able to forgive others of theirs. That is how it should be. A heart of forgiveness is a clear picture of a tender heart and that is the kind of heart that God desires from His people.
