A question was asked of me concerning my new business, and it sparked a moment of reflection. I started thinking back on how I began this food cooking business. I remembered when I registered as a Point of Sale (POS) agent with Moneypoint, and I was struggling to meet my targets.
Then, I started doing payment processing for a lady who sold food at her food joint. When customers didn't come with cash, I would receive card payments and return themoney to her after deducting the charges. This meant that in half a day, I would make up to one thousand or two thousand naira – a small amount, but it helped me meet my target as an agent.
It wasn't easy during those times. I had my own challenges, which I usually opened up to her about. She advised me to start my own food business, saying it was a great idea. I gave it some thought and decided to explore the possibility. First, I went to check for a space she had recommended. The space was previously occupied by another lady who had stopped running her business after having a child. Her husband didn't want her to stress herself, so she stopped.
However, when I approached the community health center management, who were in charge of the land, they disagreed, saying they couldn't offer me the space. It was really devastating, and I really needed to start the business. For the past two years, since I gave birth to my child, I had been a housewife.
But then, my luck changed. Another lady told me about a space in front of the community primary school that was available. They were looking for someone to take over the place, so I made inquiries and received positive responses. They gave me the space, and I was overjoyed.
I started by clearing the land, which was overgrown with bushes. After that, I went to the market with Vivian, who had recommended the place to me. She took me to all her suppliers, showing me where she bought her ingredients. It wasn't easy, but she was by my side, guiding me through the process.
As I reflected on my journey, I realized that I wasn't just doing this for the money. I was doing it because I love cooking – it's my calling. This business has been the most successful venture I've undertaken. I've tried different businesses, like soap making, but this food cooking business has turned out well for me.
I really enjoy it because cooking is my passion. I prefer cooking to eating, and it brings me joy. This realization has been enough to answer the question of why I do what I do.
