When the border was closed in march it made travel to and from Denmark (all countries, in fact) impossible until mid-June. Since I was originally born Danish, but have Norwegian citizenship, my home country was closed to me. But in the beginning of august I finally managed to get a short vacation and a to see the family. Together with one of my sisters I went to see some of the new murals and some I haven't seen before.
I passed this mural a couple of times, since my mother only lives a couple of blocks away. I do not know who the artist is, but I think it is new since I haven't seen it before.
Fintan Magee - a famous Australian street art artist who has done many murals all over the world besides Aalborg. Last time I was in town (January this year) I saw this giant piece from the highway. This time my sister and I took the car and drove straight up to it. It is an amazing piece of art! Magee painted it as part of «Out in the Open» project in 2019. In Aalborg this project has been curated by Kirk Gallery since 2014.
Another mural by Fintan Magee. I saw it for the first time in 2016, but it is still here. Right behind one of the pedistrian streets in the city center you will find the «The Pyramid». His work often affect tragic themes such as war, suffering and violence, often illustrated through childish elements.
Beautiful, colorful whales done by the Swiss duo Nevercrew. These murals - «Nuances Selection» were painted a couple of years ago. The colors are supposed to represent a fragmented timeline when it comes to evolution.
Nevercrew did this mural of a plastic bottle some years ago, outside my sister's office. She was able to follow the development from her office window!. If you look inside the bottle, you will see a whale. My sister said there is a dolphin too, but no matter for how long I looked at it, I couldn't see the dolphin. Neither could she.. Can you?
Aalborg is divided by a fjord - the Limfjord - and is connected to the other side - Nørresunby- by a bridge. On the Nørresunby side, it is painted on all the bridge pillars that support the road. Here are some of them! We didn't manage to find out who the artists are.
This beautiful portrait can be found in a backyard in the center of the city. You can only see it if you are lucky enough to walk by when the gate is open. We were lucky. We knew it was going to be here, since another of my sisters happened to pass by a few weeks ago. She was the one who told us about this. The artist is Burnon aka Claus Fredriksen. This is his first permanent mural painted a couple of years ago. He was born in Aalborg and has done many portraits here.
Thanks to projects and street art festivals like «Out in the Open» and We Aart festival, Aalborg has got an amazing urban art scene. My sister told me that this year Kirk Gallery had been inviting artists from all over the world to come. The situation of Covid-19 made it impossible. Hopefully it will be possible next year.
