We were hoping to see a bit of the English country side on our recent trip visiting some family, friends and collecting a few new parkruns. Luckily for us the Peak district was nicely situated between two of our stop overs. I had heard of the Peak District from my parents but this was my first time here. We did not have a lot of time so Cloud Thorpe was perfect, only a short hike from the car park and we got to see the stepping stones across the River Dove as well. Thorpe Cloud is an old limestone hill that was formed on an ancient sea floor. It is situated between the villages of Thorpe and IIam. I never knew the cloud part comes from the old English word clud meaning hill.
There were lots of other things to see along the River Dove, like caves and rock formations but we only had time for the walk to the top of Thorpe Cloud and the walk around the base which included the stepping stones.
It rained on the way there but cleared nicely for our short walk.
We followed the blue markers but it looked like there were many different ways to the top over the years.
It was very windy on the way up the hill, but calm on the other side going down. We did not have our proper hiking shoes with us but luckily it was not too wet or muddy so there was no slipping and sliding.
