Yesterday we looked at the Tanum Petroglyphs
After the trip to that place I wanted to go Canoeing by myself on the great lakes that I had until now only walked around. They were just inviting me to do so and how could I resist? So I took a train and traveled more inland near the big lake of VΓ€nern. If you look at the map of this area you will see that there are literally thousands of lakes there. It's basically a heaven for all water activities.
Having arrived at one of the lakes, I was surprised to see a beach! It was beautiful for taking a swim and there was a camping place right next to it where I pitched my very small tent.
There are a lot of Kayaking and Canoeing companies here which will take you to spot from which you can paddle back. It's a really nice way of traveling since you get to go on a journey with a route back to camp. But I guess a round trip would be a great idea too, although that is often a bit difficult as not all lakes connect in such a way. You will generally also get a small device for lifting the canoe or kayak over some shallow areas or even a small path. This is especially true for longer trips (e.g. 3 days+). But it's not too difficult and it really is worth doing a longer trip.
And here I was, the first time on these beautiful and pristine lakes. This isn't completely in the wild, however. You will find signs of civilization here and there. So all in all I would say this is a great place for beginners (which I was). Canoeing is of course somewhat harder than Kayaking as it takes a bit more skill to navigate the boat and is a slower way of traveling. But I enjoyed this way of traveling.
There are many places where you can rest for the day or night. Sometimes you will see a little camp site with a fire place, but you could also pitch your tent where ever you want which is allowed here in Sweden. Just leave the place how you found it. If this is your first time on such a trip (especially when you are by yourself) it can be a bit of a new situation to settle down for the day. You will have to have some sort of routine: finding a suitable spot for the night, pitching the tent, making fire, cook some food etc. It's definitely a bit of work, but when one takes the time to do these things it does not feel like a chore and one can more easily enjoy nature.
