As I mentioned in my travel posts last year, I don't like the vacation format that goes between hotel, sea and foods. I want to discover new places at homeland or abroad as much as possible. Before the pandemic, I traveled abroad every year. However, the pandemic caused millions of people, including me, to change their travel plans for at least 2 years. After the pandemic, it was time for me to start traveling abroad. Last year, I did this by going to Thessaloniki, Greece. My second choice for an abroad vacation this year was Greece again. I will write about Thermi and Plomari Barbayannis Ouzo Museum & Factory in the third part of my Lesbos island travel post series.

Geçen seneki seyahat yazılarımda da belirttiğim gibi otel, deniz ve yemek arasında geçip giden tatil anlayışını sevmiyorum. Yurtiçinde veya yurtdışında mümkün olduğunca yeni yerler keşfetmek istiyorum. Pandemiden önce her yıl yurtdışı seyahatleri yapan biriydim. Fakat, pandemi benim gibi dünyada milyonlarca insanların seyahat planlarını en az 2 yıl değiştirmesine sebep oldu. Pandemiden sonra benim için artık yurtdışı seyahatlerime başlamanın zamanı gelmişti. Geçen sene bunu Yunanistan’ın Selanik şehrine giderek gerçekleştirdim. Bu yılki ikinci yurtdışı seyahat tercihim yine Yunanistan oldu. Lesbos adası gezi yazısı serimin üçüncü bölümünde sizlere Termi ve Barbayannis Uzo Müzesi & Fabrikası’ndan bahsedeceğim.
We set off northwest from Lesbos, the capital of Mytilene. We were going to visit the places that were worth seeing according to the map in our hand. We couldn’t eat much at lunch because of looking for a rental car and walking around Mytilene. The weather was also quite hot. As we continued our way north, we stopped at a village by the sea called Thermi. We wanted to eat something and rest here. We stopped at such a cute place where there are fishing boats and came to a restaurant by the sea which is in a short distance away. Since Turkish and Greek cuisines are almost the same, I think Greece is the last country where a Turk would have a problem with eating. We had lunch facing such a beautiful view.
Lesbos adasının merkezi Midilli’den kuzeybatıya doğru yola çıktık. Elimizdeki haritaye göre görülmesi gereken yerlere uğrayacaktık. Kiralık araba bakma ve Midilli’yi gezme nedeniyle öğlen öğününde çok şey yiyememiştik. Hava da oldukça sıcaktı. Kuzeye doğru yolumuza devam ederken deniz kenarında bulunan, Thermi adında bir köyde mola verdik. Burda hem birşeyler yemek hem de dinlenmek istedik. Böyle balıkçı teknelerinin olduğu şirin bir yerde durduk ve az ilerde deniz kenarındaki bir restoranta geldik. Türk ve Yunanistan mutfağı hemen hemen aynı olduğu için bence Yunanistan bir Türkün yemek sorunu yaşayacağı en son ülkedir. Böyle güzel bir manzaraya karşı öğlen yemeğimizi yedik.
I won’t go into the price of what we ate, but if we had eaten the same thing in Turkey, we would have paid more. It was almost 4 o’clock and we were tired. I can say that we had been up since the previous night, except for sleeping a little on the bus on the way to Ayvalık. Thus, we headed to the hotel where we would be staying after eating. We would pass through Mytilene again and head south to get to the hotel. We would stop by another place on this route. Lesbos is mountainous compared to other Greek islands; it has winding and narrow roads. You have to be very careful while driving because sometimes you drive over a cliff. After about an hour of driving, we arrived at the Barbayannis Ouzo Museum and Factory in Plomari, one of Greece’s famous ouzo brands. The museum and factory are adjacent to each other. We visited the ouzo museum first.
Yediklerimizin fiyatına girmeyeceğim ama aynı şeyleri Türkiye’de yeseydik daha fazla hesap öderdik. Saat 4’e geliyordu ve yorulmuştuk. Ayvalık’a giderken otobüste biraz uyumamız dışında dün geceden itibaren ayaktaydık diyebilirim. Bu nedenle yemek faslından sonra kalacağımız otele doğru yola çıktık. Otele gitmek için tekrar Midilli’den geçip güneye gidecektik. Bu güzergah üzerinde olan bir yere daha uğrayacaktık. Lesbos adası diğer Yunan adalarına göre dağlık; virajlı ve dar yolları var. Araba kullanırken çok dikkatli olmanız grekiyor çünkü kimi zaman uçurum kenarından geçiyorsunuz. Yaklaşık bir saat yolculuğun ardından Plomari’de bulunan ve Yunanistan’nın ünlü uzo markalarından biri olan Barbayannis’in içki müzesi ve fabrikasına varmıştık. Müze ve fabrika bitişik konumda. Önce ouzo müzesini gezdik.
Barbayannis is a 164-year-old family business. It has been producing ouzo under the Barbayannis brand for five generations. The ouzo museum is a small museum. As you can see in the photos, there are tools, barrels, cauldrons, old bottles and a large distillation machine in the museum, which were used for making ouzo in the past. Staying in the museum for about 10 minutes and cooling down, we entered the factory just below. You can smell anise and various aromas from while approaching to the factory. The fertile soil of Lesbos, along with its suitable climate and abundant water, allows for the growth of a wide variety of fruits and vegetables on the island. Some of these are used in the production of drinks like ouzo. You can taste four types of Barbayannis ouzo at the entrance of the factory. If you have never had ouzo, I can say that it is similar to our raki; but, has a stronger aroma. The hot weather and the warm drinks can upset your taste buds and stomach. I can say that the price of ouzo is the same as Duty Free prices.
Barbayannis 164 yıllık bir aile şirketi. Beş kuşaktır Barbayannis markası altında uzo üretimi yapılıyormuş. Uzo müzesi küçük bir müze. Fotoğraflarda da gördüğünüz gibi müze içinde eskiden uzo yapımında kullanılan aletler, fıçılar, kazanlar, eski şişeler ve büyük bir damıtma makinası bulunmaktadır. 10 dakika kadar müzede durup biraz serinledikten sonra hemen aşağıda bulunan fabrikaya girdik. Anason ve çeşitli aroma kokularını daha müzeden alabiliyorsunuz. Lesbos adasının verimli toprağı, uygun iklimi ve suyun bol olmasıyla birlikte adada çok çeşitli meyve ve sebzelerin yetişmesine olanak sağlıyor. Bunların bir kısmı da böyle uzo gibi içkilerin yapılmasında kullanılıyor. Fabrikanın girişinde dört çeşit Barbayannis uzosnun tadımını yapabiliyorsunuz. Uzo hiç içmediyseniz, bizim rakıya benziyor; ama, aroması daha ağır diyebilirim. Havanın sıcak olması ve içkilerin de ılık olarak tadılması ağız tadınızı ve midenizi bozabilir. Ouzoların fiyatı ise Duty Free fiyatları ile aynı diyebilirim.
