As I mentioned in my travel posts last year, I don't like the vacation format that goes between hotel, sea and foods. I want to discover new places at homeland or abroad as much as possible. Before the pandemic, I traveled abroad every year. However, the pandemic caused millions of people, including me, to change their travel plans for at least 2 years. After the pandemic, it was time for me to start traveling abroad. Last year, I did this by going to Thessaloniki, Greece. My second choice for an abroad vacation this year was Greece again. I will write about the centre of the island, Mytilene in the second part of my Lesbos island travel post series.

Geçen seneki seyahat yazılarımda da belirttiğim gibi otel, deniz ve yemek arasında geçip giden tatil anlayışını sevmiyorum. Yurtiçinde veya yurtdışında mümkün olduğunca yeni yerler keşfetmek istiyorum. Pandemiden önce her yıl yurtdışı seyahatleri yapan biriydim. Fakat, pandemi benim gibi dünyada milyonlarca insanların seyahat planlarını en az 2 yıl değiştirmesine sebep oldu. Pandemiden sonra benim için artık yurtdışı seyahatlerime başlamanın zamanı gelmişti. Geçen sene bunu Yunanistan’ın Selanik şehrine giderek gerçekleştirdim. Bu yılki ikinci yurtdışı seyahat tercihim yine Yunanistan oldu. Lesbos adası gezi yazısı serimin ikinci bölümünde sizlere adanın merkezi olan Midilli’den bahsedeceğim.
We boarded the catamaran that would take us to Lesbos and waited for the departure time. Since we had arrived and completed the procedures early, there were still passengers waiting in line who did not gone through passport control. As we had seen in the news this summer, we had witnessed the extreme demand for the Greek islands, especially those that require just a gate visa. Three catamarans were waiting to depart at the same time. Although a little late, we set sail for Lesbos.
Bizi Lesbos adasına götürecek kataramana bindik ve hareket saatini beklemeye başladık. Biz erkenden gelip işlemleri de erken hallettiğimiz için hala sırada bekleyen ve pasaport kontrolünden geçmeyen yolcular vardı. Haberlerde de gördüğümüz gibi bu yaz, özellikle sadece kapıda vizeyle gidilebilen Yunan adalarına aşırı talep olduğuna yakından şahit olmuştuk. Aynı anda üç kataraman hareket etmeyi bekliyordu. Biraz gecikmeli de olsa Lesbos adasına doğru demir aldık.
We arrived at the port of Mytilene about an hour later. There were also catamarans that arrived at the port before us and the port was quite crowded. Those with a gate visa and those with a Schengen visa or Green Passport wait in separate lines at the port. The names and surnames of those who have gate visa are called and their visas are affixed to their passports. Then, they wait in line for the entry stamp. Since we had a Schengen visa, we entered Mytilene after waiting in line for 15-20 minutes. Let me give you a little information. The capital and center of the island of Lesbos is Mytilene, but we Turks call the whole island Mytilene.
Yaklaşık bir saat sonra Midilli Limanı’na varmıştık. Limana bizden önce varan kataramanlar da vardı ve liman oldukça kalabalıktı. Kapıda vize olanlar ile Schengen vizesi veya Yeşil Pasaportu olanlar limanda farklı sıralarda bekliyor. Kapıda vize alanların önce isim-soy isimleri okunup vizeleri pasaportuna yapıştırılıyor. Daha sonra giriş damgası için sırada beklliyorlar. Bizim Schengen vizemiz olduğu için 15-20 dakika sırada bekledikten sonra Midilli’ye giriş yaptık. Küçük bir bilgi vereyim. Lesbos adasının başkenti ve merkezi Midilli’dir, ama biz Türkler adanın geneline Midilli diyoruz.
It was after noon. You can see the staff and buses of many tour companies at the exit of the customs office in Mytilene. Since we were going to rent a car, we walked around the center of Mytilene and looked for a fine rental company. We rented a car from a company for around 1000 TL (30 EUR) per day. If you are not coming to Mytilene and Lesbos with a tour, you have to rent a car to exploere the island as the public transport in Greek islands are not developed. They said the car would be ready in an hour. We started walking to eat something and to explore the back streets of Mytilene. First, we walked around the Mytilene Marina and came to the Church of St. Therapon. The Church of St. Therapon is the most striking structure in Mytilene. Bad luck for us, the church was under renovation. This church was built upon the request of the Christian Greek subjects of Mytilene by the decree issued by Abdulmecid. We can see a copy of this decree at the entrance of the church, the original of which is said to be in Topkapı Palace.
Saat öğlen olmuştu. Midilli gümrükten çıkışta birçok tur şirketinin personelini ve otobüslerini görebilirsiniz. Biz araba kiralayacağımız için hem Midilli merkezde biraz dolaştık hem de uygun bir kiralama firması aradık. Bir firmadan günlük 1000 TL (30 EUR) civarında bir fiyata araba kiradık. Midilli’ye ve Lesbos adasına tur ile gelmiyorsanız adayı gezmek için araba kiralamak zorundasınız çünkü Yunan adalarında toplu taşıma çok gelişmemiştir. Arabanın bir saat sonra hazır olacağını söylediler. Biz de hem bir şeyler yemek hem de Midilli’nin arka sokaklarını gezmek için yürümeye başladık. Öncelikle Midilli Marina’nın etrafından yürüyerek Aziz Therapon Kilisesi’ne geldik. Aziz Therapon Kilisesi, Midilli’nin en göze çarpan yapıtı. Bizim şansımıza kilise tadilattaydı. Bu kilise Abdulmecid tarafından ferman çıkartılarak, Midilli’deki Hristiyan Yunan tebanın talebi üzerine yapılmıştır. Kilisenin girişinde bu fermanın bir kopyasını görebiliriz, fermanın aslı ise Topkapı Sarayı’ndaymış.

We were able to walk around the church for a short while because there was a lot of noise due to the renovation. After leaving the church, we continued walking on Ermou Street. There is a more developed version of this street in Athens. We can call it a shopping-market street. The one in Athens is a bit like our İstiklal Street. During the Ottoman period, the street was known as the Ottoman Bazaar. After walking a little more, we came across the New Mosque, also from the Ottoman period. The mosque was actively used until the time of the exchange, but after the exchange, it was abandoned to its fate because there was no Muslim population left in Lesbos. The Greek state is not in a hurry to restore and protect historical structures from the Ottoman Empire in the country, it is up to you to comment. By the way, as in Ayvalık, I also noticed abandoned and left-to-its-fate structures in Lesbos. I think these most likely belong to Turks who were forced to migrate due to the population exchange.
Kilisenin içinde kısa bir süre dolaşabildik çünkü tadilattan dolayı çok ses vardı. Kiliseden ayrıldıktan sonra Ermou Caddesi’nden yürümeye devam ettik. Bu caddenin daha gelişmisi Atina’da da vardır. Bir nevi alışveriş-çarşı caddesi diyebiliriz. Atina’da olanı biraz bizim İstiklal Caddesi’ne benziyor. Osmanlı zamanında caddenin Osmanlı Çarşısı olarak anılmaktaymış. Biraz daha yürüdükten sonra karşımıza yine Osmanlı zamanından kalma Yeni Cami çıktı. Cami mübadele zamanına kadar aktif olarak kullanılmış, mübadeleden sonra Midilli’de müslüman nüfus kalmadığı için kaderine terk edilmiştir. Yunanistan devleti, ülkede Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’ndan kalma tarihi yapıları restore etme ve korumada pek aceleci davranmıyor, yorum sizin. Bu arada, Ayvalık’ta olduğu gibi, Midilli’de de gözüme terk edilmiş ve kendi haline bırakılmış yapılar çarptı. Bunların büyük ihtimalle mübadele nedeniyle zorunlu göç eden Türklere ait olduğunu düşünüyorum.

If you enter from the street next to the New Mosque and walk a little, you will come across the Çarşı Hamam, also from the Ottoman period. We did not go inside the hamam because of the crowd of tourists who came with tour, but from what I heard from the tour guide, the hamam is used for cultural and artistic activities today. We walked to the end of Ermou Street. There is also a church built for St. Paul here.
Yeni Cami’nin yanındaki sokaktan girip biraz yürüdüğünüzde karşınıza yine Osmanlı zamanından kalma Çarşı Hamam çıkıyor. Turla gelen turistlerin kalabalığından hamamın içine girmedik, ama turist rehberinden duyduğuma göre hamam günümüzde kültür ve sanat faaliyetleri için kullanılıyormuş. Yürüyerek Ermou Caddesi’nin sonuna gelmiştik. Burda da Aziz Paul için yapılmış bir kilise bulunmaktadır.

We had reached the end of Ermou Street. Almost an hour had passed. We walked back from the end of the street towards the center of Mytilene to pick up the car we had rented. After picking up the car, we set off towards the northwest of the island and began our tour. See you in the next post of my Lesbos Island tour. All the photos in this post belong to me. Ermou Caddesi’nin sonuna gelmiştik. Hemen hemen bir saat geçmişti. Kiralıdığımız arabayı almak için caddenin sonundan geri Midilli merkeze doğru yürüdük. Arabyı aldıktan sonra adanın kuzeybatısına doğru yola çıkarak gezimize başladık. Lesbos adası gezi turumun bir sonraki yazısında görüşmek üzere. Bu yazıdaki tüm fotoğraflar bana aittir.
