It won't be inaugurated until July 16, but I'm already sharing the latest institutional mural* in Coimbra. Signed by artist Mário Belém and created by Mistaker Maker - Plataforma de Intervenção Artística, it is located in the city center, at the intersection of Avenida Fernão de Magalhães with Rua da Sota and Rua Adelino Veiga, in Largo das Ameias.
*I divide street art into two parts. 1) Institutional, like this one, because it's paid for by public money. In this case by Coimbra City Council. It cost around 12,000 euros and was finished a few days ago. 2) The Marginal, which is supported by the creators, who ensure the entire production and, often, with adrenaline running high.
The mural is 13 meters wide by 7.5 meters high and is inspired by the legend of the “Battle of the Snake”, related to the founding of the city of Coimbra (Portugal). This intervention aims to revitalize this urban area, enhance the city's identity and memory, and reinforce its cultural and tourist positioning
The legend, of uncertain origin and with several versions, is described on the town hall's website. Reproduction: "It tells the story of a knight in love with a princess, who faces a menacing serpent called Coluber. By defeating the monster, the knight wins the right to marry the princess, and on the site of the battle the town of Columber Briga is born, which would later give rise to Coimbra.
In the sketch of the work, which is already known, we can see a knight leading his horse, on which lies the body of the giant serpent that has just been slain in battle. It is implied that the knight is making the journey back to his beloved's castle to ask for her hand in marriage. From the tip of the snake, a flourish is born (alluding to the flourishes of illuminated manuscripts) which symbolizes the explosion of color and life inherent in the founding of Coimbra as a city.
The characters move along the bank of the River Mondego. In the background, on the opposite bank, we can see the silhouette of modern-day Coimbra. The sky is sunset, representing the beautiful day that is to come tomorrow. The rider is dressed in knitwear and a vest, but is wearing contemporary shorts and sneakers. On the horse we can see some objects, a medieval tournament lance, a sword, a kettle, a lantern (to light his way) and an old telephone (which reinforces the concept of a story that is passed down by word of mouth, to the point that we no longer even know its origin)."

Com assinatura do artista Mário Belém, com execução a cargo da Mistaker Maker - Plataforma de Intervenção artística, está situado no centro da cidade, no cruzamento da Avenida Fernão de Magalhães com a Rua da Sota e a Rua Adelino Veiga, no Largo das Ameias.

*Eu divido a arte de rua em duas partes. 1) A institucional, como esta, porque é paga por dinheiros públicos. Neste caso pela Câmara Municipal de Coimbra. Custou cerca de 12 mil euros e foi terminada há dias atrás. 2) A Marginal, aquela que é sustentada pelos criadores, que asseguram toda a produção e, muitas vezes, com a adrenalina ao rubro.

LENDA
A lenda, de origem incerta e com várias versões, é descrita no website da câmara Municipal. Reprodução: “Narra a história de um cavaleiro apaixonado por uma princesa, que enfrenta uma serpente ameaçadora chamada Coluber. Ao vencer o monstro, o cavaleiro conquista o direito a casar com a princesa, e no local da batalha nasce a povoação de Columber Briga, que mais tarde daria origem a Coimbra.

No esboço da obra, já conhecido, podemos ver um cavaleiro levando o seu cavalo, sobre o qual está o corpo da serpente gigante que acaba de ser abatida em batalha. Fica subentendido que o cavaleiro está a fazer a viagem de regresso ao castelo da sua amada, para pedir a sua mão em casamento. A partir da ponta da serpente, nasce um floreado (alusivo aos floreados dos manuscritos iluminados) que simboliza a explosão de cor e vida inerente à fundação de Coimbra como cidade.

As personagens deslocam-se ao longo da margem do Rio Mondego. Ao fundo, na margem oposta, podemos ver a silhueta de Coimbra dos dias de hoje. O céu é de pôr de sol, representando assim o belo dia que está por nascer amanhã. O cavaleiro está vestido com uma malha e colete, mas tem uns calções e sapatilhas contemporâneos. Sobre o cavalo podemos ver alguns objetos, uma lança de torneio medieval, uma espada, uma chaleira, uma lanterna (para lhe iluminar o caminho) e um telefone antigo (que reforça o conceito de um relato que é passado de boca em boca, a tal ponto que já nem sabemos qual a sua origem).”
