Personally, I liked the use of lights and shadows in its rudimentary day and night cycle.
Colors play a significant role in creating the apocalyptic atmosphere of Prototype. Practically all scenarios are in dark, muted, and gray tones, such as gray, black, and brown, which reinforce the feeling of desolation and terror. Additionally, the use of reddish tones in certain areas of the game, beyond the interface, suggests danger and violence, adding an extra layer of tension and a fitting visual narrative.
Fog is another important visual element in Prototype. It is not only used to cover inaccessible parts of the city and limit the player’s visibility but also creates a sense of uncertainty and constant danger. Contributing to the already mentioned oppressive atmosphere of the game, making the city seem even more desolate and mysterious.
Prototype uses a combination of dark colors, fog, and reddish tones to create an apocalyptic atmosphere that immerses the player in a city on the brink of chaos. Undoubtedly an excellent game that, despite the graphical limitations of the time, manages to capture at least interesting and disturbing snapshots. If you haven’t tried the game, I encourage you to do so; personally, I found it extremely entertaining, even though I didn’t initially consider it a good game.
