Los Antiguos (parte 14)
Las máquinas sublimadoras, seguían su tarea de remover las toneladas de hielo de agua que llenaba el interior del edificio central de la ciudad sumergida, en el fondo, los sensores de positrones, ya habían detectado la presencia de treinta y tres naves sonda, la mayoría dentro de celdas cerradas, en la pared interior del edificio y unas pocas, esparcidas sobre el suelo; sin embargo, aún había mucho hielo por remover, para poder tener acceso a ellas.
En la estación orbital, los especialistas continuaban analizando los datos recabados por los robots exploradores, que no paraban de enviar imágenes del interior de los edificios más pequeños de la ciudad explorada en el continente, que, en su totalidad, eran instalaciones casi vacías, equipadas con lo que parecían puestos de reaprovisionamiento para naves, sin embargo, sus paredes mostraban cavidades que parecían formar redes que se extendían por toda la superficie, como si las raíces o ramas de algún tipo de planta hubiese crecido en ellas y socavado su estructura, para luego desaparecer.
―¡Bingo! ―se escucho gritar repentinamente a la doctora Ibraimovich, quien ya cumplía tres horas sentada frente a la pantalla del microscopio de barrido de electrones en su improvisado laboratorio. Valentina, su única compañera en el recinto, saltó del diván; donde se encontraba tomando una siesta.
La pantalla del microscopio, mostraba en medio de diminutos cristales de sílice, suspendidos en el hielo de agua oceánica de las muestras, lo que parecía un objeto en forma de bala, con una membrana casi traslucida rodeada de decenas de apéndices similares a flagelos, en el interior del objeto se distinguían varios compartimientos, que parecían contener gránulos similares a diminutos cristales, centenas de veces más pequeños que los de sílice que rodeaban el objeto.
―¡Eureka! ―grito a un más sonoramente Ibraimovich, mientras miraba entrar a Valentina, desde la oficina contigua; sus ojos tenían la misma mirada desquiciada que cuando llegó a la conclusión de que los antiguos eran tecnobiológicos ―. Lo encontré, encontré un organismo de algún tipo.
―¿¡Está vivó!? ―preguntó Valentina, estupefacta.
―¿Cómo va a estar vivo Valentina? ―dijo Ibraimovich, poniendo una repentina expresión de asombro, ante la, para ella, curiosa pregunta de su asistente―. Tiene miles de millones de años congelado a temperaturas próximas al cero absoluto, ¿cómo puede estar vivo?
―Lo siento doctora, me tomó por sorpresa ―respondió la joven claramente avergonzada―. Recuerde que no soy bióloga…, y su entusiasmo … ―hizo una pausa, como quien trata de aclarar sus ideas antes de decir algo ―. Olvídelo, no se de que estoy hablando, aun no estoy del todo despierta. Cuénteme que encontró.
―No lo sé con exactitud, pero es un tipo de organismo microscópico, tiene un aspecto similar a una bacteria, pero el interior de su cuerpo parece estar particionado o estar formado por la unión de estructuras aun más pequeñas que ella y no logro identificar los organelos que habitualmente deberían estar allí ―explicó Ibraimovich, con sus ojos exageradamente abiertos y sus delirantes pupilas fijas en el rostro de Valentina ―. Debemos analizarla usando el espectroscopio, para identificar su composición, y usar el escáner de positrones para estudiar su estructura interna.
La sala de consejo reunía a los catedráticos que formaban la expedición al planeta, mientras que los integrantes de la misión que estudiaba la estrella negra, a bordo de la Arquímedes, estaban presentes mediante un enlace cuántico, al igual que el equipo de astrobiólogos que se hallaban en las ruinas sumergidas del otro planeta.
―Ésta es hasta el momento la única criatura que hemos encontrado en las muestras extraídas del océano, fue hallada a ciento treinta y dos metros de profundidad, fue necesario examinar tres metros cúbicos de hielo, antes de encontrarla―explicó Faith Ibraimovich, mientras la imagen del organismo se proyectaba en medio de la circunferencia que formaban los asientos de la sala ―. Tal parece que es una especie de criatura colonial, no se trata de una única célula, pero su tamaño es de dos micrómetros, está en el rango de nuestras bacterias, pero sus componentes son aún menores.
La imagen proyectada, cambió a una representación vectorial del organismo, que luego se fragmentó, mostrando por separado, los doce compartimentos que lo formaban y luego, por instrucción de Faith, uno de ellos fue magnificado y segmentado en varios cortes longitudinales, dejando ver la representación de su interior.
―Su interior contiene lo que parece ser una mezcla de moléculas grandes, basadas en nitrógeno con una escaza presencia de carbono y boro, además de trazas de sodio, magnesio, cloro y potasio― explicó Faith ―. En otras palabras, no se trataba de criaturas orgánicas.
―¿Son estos los antiguos? ―preguntó un joven estudiante del doctorado en astroarqueología, a cargo de Saul.
―Definitivamente estos son organismos muy simples, esperaría algo mucho más complejo de ellos ―respondió Faith ―. Sin embargo, hay algo interesante, he encontrado que las moléculas presentes en el organismo tienen similitud con los compuestos neurotransmisores, presentes tanto en las células neuronales terrestres, como en las metanoronas de las criaturas de CB345 ―explicó, mientras en la pantalla se proyectaba la estructura molecular de algunos de los compuestos hallados en el organismo ―. Además, los delgados apéndices, similares a flagelos que cubren su membrana exterior, están presentes en dos tipos, unos son similares a diminutos túbulos que terminan en la membrana interior del organismo, que es más delgada y traslucida que la exterior, y los otros son como diminutos filamentos que terminan en el interior del organismo. Si queremos especular, pues requeríamos de otras muestras y estudios más detallados para probarlos, este organismo es comparable con una célula nerviosa con características autónomas, y cada uno de sus componentes tienen características similares al todo.
―Es decir según su hipótesis, estos seres, son el equivalente de un amasijo de neuronas ―intervino Carducci, quien se mantenía atento a las imágenes que eran proyectadas.
―Es una forma burda de decirlo, pero mi conclusión dirá que se trata de un organismo colonial formado por componentes con características similares a las células neuronales, que, por sus componentes moleculares, pudo tener la capacidad de emitir señales eléctricas y radioeléctricas, a través de sus apéndices.
―Un momento, ¿radioeléctricas dijo? ― preguntó Saul, aparentemente, adelantándose a Carducci, en expresar la duda.
―Sí, creo que los apéndices que asemeja a túbulos, son similares a fibras ópticas, algunas de las moléculas presentes, delatan la posible presencia de bioluminiscencia, así que es posible, por la forma que tiene la estructura, que estos apéndices, sirvieran para conducir señales luminosas al igual que lo hacen las fibras ópticas.
―Cree usted que este tipo de organismo, nos pueda dar una idea de la estructura de los antiguos ―preguntó Carducci.
―Es difícil decirlo, pero si esperaría encontrar una estructura más compleja en ellos ―respondió Faith―. Pero el hecho de que este organismo, sea en sí, muy parecido a una célula nerviosa, me hace pensar en los caminos que siguió la evolución en este mundo, y en que esto parece estar alineado con la confirmación de mi hipótesis original sobre los antiguos.

The Ancients (part 14)
The sublimation machines continued their task of removing the tons of water ice that filled the interior of the central building of the submerged city. At the bottom, the positron sensors had already detected the presence of thirty-three probe ships, most of them inside closed cells on the interior wall of the building and a few scattered on the ground; however, there was still a lot of ice to be removed in order to have access to them.
At the orbital station, the specialists continued to analyze the data collected by the robot explorers, who kept sending images of the interior of the smallest buildings of the explored city on the continent, which were almost all empty facilities, equipped with what looked like refueling stations for ships, however, their walls showed cavities that seemed to form networks that extended over the entire surface, as if the roots or branches of some kind of plant had grown in them and undermined their structure, and then disappeared.
-Bingo! -heard Dr. Ibraimovich suddenly shout, sitting for three hours in front of the electron-scanning microscope screen in her makeshift laboratory. Valentina, her only companion in the room, jumped off the couch, where she was taking a nap.
The screen of the microscope, showed in the middle of tiny silica crystals, suspended in the oceanic water ice of the samples, what looked like a bullet-shaped object, with an almost translucent membrane surrounded by tens of flagella-like appendages, inside the object there were several compartments, which seemed to contain granules similar to tiny crystals, hundreds of times smaller than the silica ones surrounding the object.
-Eureka! -shouted a more sonorous Ibraimovich, as she watched Valentina enter from the adjoining office; her eyes had the same deranged look as when she concluded that the ancients were technobiological-. I found it, I found an organism of some kind.
-Is it alive? -asked Valentina, stunned.
-How can it be alive, Valentina? -said Ibraimovich, making a sudden expression of astonishment, at the, for her, curious question from her assistant-. It' s billions of years old, frozen at temperatures close to absolute zero - how can it be alive?
-I'm sorry, doctor, you took me by surprise, - answered the young woman clearly ashamed-. Remember that I am not a biologist..., and your enthusiasm...- she paused, as if trying to clear her head before saying something-. Forget it, I don't know what I'm talking about, I'm not quite awake yet. Tell me what you found?
-I don't know exactly, but it's a microscopic organism, it looks like a bacterium, but the inside of its body seems to be partitioned or formed by the union of structures even smaller than it, and I can't identify the organelles that should be there - explained Ibraimovich, with her eyes wide open and her delirious pupils fixed on Valentina's face -. We must analyze it using the spectroscope, to identify its composition, and use the positron scanner to study its internal structure.
The council room gathered the professors who formed the expedition to the planet, while the members of the mission studying the black star on board the Archimedes were present by quantum link, as was the team of astrobiologists who were in the submerged ruins of the other planet.

-Its interior contains what appears to be a mixture of large molecules, based on nitrogen with a small presence of carbon and boron, as well as traces of sodium, magnesium, chlorine and potassium- explained Faith -. In other words, they were not organic creatures.
-Are these the ancient ones? -asked a young PhD student in astroarchaeology, under Saul.
-Definitely these are very simple organisms, I would expect something much more complex from them - answered Faith -. However, there is something interesting, I have found that the molecules present in the organism have similarity with neurotransmitter compounds, present both in terrestrial neuronal cells, and in the methanorones of CB345 creatures - she explained, while the molecular structure of some of the compounds found in the organism was projected on the screen -. In addition, the thin flagella-like appendages that cover its outer membrane are present in two types, one being similar to tiny tubules that end in the organism's inner membrane, which is thinner and more translucent than the outer, and the other being like tiny filaments that end in the interior of the organism. If we want to speculate, since we required other samples and more detailed studies to prove them, this organism is comparable to a nerve cell with autonomous characteristics, and each of its components has characteristics similar to the whole.
-That is to say, according to his hypothesis, these beings are the equivalent of a mass of neurons- -Carducci intervened, who was attentive to the images that were projected.
-It's a crude way of saying it, but my conclusion will be that it is a colonial organism formed by components with similar characteristics to neuronal cells, which, because of their molecular components, could have had the capacity to emit electrical and radio signals, through their appendages.
-Saul asked - apparently ahead of Carducci, expressing doubt.
-Yes, I think the appendages which resemble tubules are similar to optical fibres, some of the molecules present give away the possible presence of bioluminescence, so it is possible from the shape of the structure that these appendages were used to conduct light signals just as optical fibres do.
-Do you think this type of organism can give us an idea of the structure of the ancient ones -Carducci asked.
-It is difficult to say, but I would expect to find a more complex structure in them- replied Faith-. But the fact that this organism is in itself very much like a nerve cell makes me think of the ways in which evolution took place in this world, and that this seems to be in line with the confirmation of my original hypothesis about the ancients.
