Saludos. Esta semana los amigos de @humanitas nos dejan la invitación a debatir sobre la estética, un tema que sin duda da para muchas interpretaciones.
Hubo un momento en que los primeros filósofos comenzaron a preguntarse sobre lo bello y la belleza, algo que probablemente pareciera innecesario en nuestros días.
Sin embargo, aquellos hombres, maravillados ante el espectáculo que ofrecía el reverdecer de la primavera, el cielo estrellado, o cualquier ocaso a la orilla del mar, pusieron a trabajar sus mentes y se hicieron varias preguntas esenciales: ¿Por qué no somos indiferentes ante esos hechos…?¿Qué potencia hay en ellos como para lograr conmovernos…? ¿Qué hay en nosotros que nos permite conmovernos?
Esas preguntas fueron abriendo el campo para desarrollar a lo largo del tiempo diferentes teorías sobre la belleza, el arte y la estética.
Desde la exagerada postura relativista predominante en nuestros días, donde muchos opinan que toda la realidad no es más que una apreciación subjetiva, pudiéramos llegar a la conclusión que lo bello no existe.
Claro, porque si lo bello se limita a impresiones personales y a opiniones de los sujetos, la belleza como algo trascendental, que no depende de la valoración que le demos cada uno de nosotros, pues sencillamente no existe. Esto lo podemos ilustrar con una frase muy usada: “lo que es bonito para mí no lo es para ti.”
Sin embargo, y volviendo a las grandes preguntas de los antiguos, pudiéramos decir: Ok, es verdad, existe una valoración subjetiva de lo que es bello y de lo que no lo es, a mí me gusta el pelo negro y a ti el rojo. Pero, aunque tengamos gustos y valoraciones estéticas distintas, lo podemos hacer porque en ti y en mí habita “una idea de lo bello”, que cada uno llena de contenido a su modo. Independiente de nuestros gustos y opiniones, todos tenemos la facultad de poder distinguir lo que es bello.
Y por este camino podemos seguir con más preguntas difíciles: ¿Y de dónde nos viene esa capacidad de poder distinguir entre lo bello y lo feo…? Otro tema problemático…
Para algunos, como tantas otras cosas, el poder apreciar la belleza, desde la primera infancia, es un regalo divino. El creador quiso dejarnos ese don de poder experimentar profundas conmociones espirituales cuando nos sentimos arrebatados por la belleza, bien sea de un entorno natural, o de una manifestación del arte, en la música, la pintura, la escritura, o cualquier otra.
Los más materialistas dirían que la belleza y sus criterios son construcciones culturales, y por lo tanto convenciones sociales. Por eso cada época, cada cultura, establece diferentes criterios estéticos. Durante el renacimiento era estéticamente aceptado como bello el cuerpo humano con formas voluminosas, en nuestro tiempo sigue predominando un ideal de belleza basado en la estilización del cuerpo.
En lo personal estoy muy consciente que la cultura de cada tiempo va estableciendo patrones estéticos, sobre todo en sociedades donde el arte como forma de expresión se ha separado completamente de las referencias del mundo natural.
En el Medioevo era impensable el arte abstracto o realista, toda manifestación artística estaba normada por las ideas religiosas y atendía a la necesidad del desarrollo espiritual. En un mundo desacralizado como el nuestro el arte goza de total libertad. Ya ni siquiera es importante que haya un espectador que lo aprecie, todo vale.
Pero mi limitado entendimiento no me da para responder, con las herramientas de la razón, de dónde nos viene esa facultad de poder experimentar tantas sensaciones placenteras cuando nos dejamos invadir por el goce estético. Un asunto que sin duda está mucho más allá de poder decir esto es bonito o feo.
El que se pongan de acuerdo tantos neurotransmisores para podernos transmitir esas sensaciones de gozo ante cualquier manifestación de la belleza, es para mí un regalo divino.
Una vez más he disfrutado mucho escribiendo la publicación. Agradezco a los amigos de la comunidad @humanitas por la invitación a debatir sobre estos asuntos.

There was a time when the first philosophers began to wonder about the beautiful and beauty, something that would probably seem unnecessary in our days.
However, those men, marveling at the spectacle offered by the greening of spring, the starry sky, or any sunset at the seashore, put their minds to work and asked themselves several essential questions: Why are we not indifferent to those facts... What is in them so powerful as to move us... What is in us that allows us to be moved... What is in us that allows us to be moved?
These questions opened the field for the development over time of different theories on beauty, art and aesthetics.
From the exaggerated relativist position predominant in our days, where many believe that all reality is nothing more than a subjective appreciation, we could reach the conclusion that beauty does not exist.
Of course, because if beauty is limited to personal impressions and opinions of the subjects, beauty as something transcendental, which does not depend on the valuation that each of us give it, then it simply does not exist. We can illustrate this with a much-used phrase: "what is beautiful to me is not beautiful to you."
However, and returning to the great questions of the ancients, we could say: Ok, it is true, there is a subjective valuation of what is beautiful and what is not, I like black hair and you like red. But, although we have different tastes and aesthetic evaluations, we can do it because in you and in me there is "an idea of beauty", which each one of us fills with content in our own way. Regardless of our tastes and opinions, we all have the ability to distinguish what is beautiful.
And along this path we can continue with more difficult questions: And where does this ability to distinguish between the beautiful and the ugly come from...? Another problematic issue...
For some, like so many other things, being able to appreciate beauty from early childhood is a divine gift. The creator wanted to leave us this gift of being able to experience deep spiritual stirrings when we are taken by beauty, whether it be in a natural environment, or in a manifestation of art, in music, painting, writing, or any other.
The more materialistic would say that beauty and its criteria are cultural constructions, and therefore social conventions. That is why each era, each culture, establishes different aesthetic criteria. During the renaissance it was aesthetically accepted as beautiful the human body with voluminous forms, in our time continues to predominate an ideal of beauty based on the stylization of the body.
Personally, I am very aware that the culture of each time establishes aesthetic patterns, especially in societies where art as a form of expression has been completely separated from the references of the natural world. In the Middle Ages, abstract or realistic art was unthinkable, all artistic manifestations were regulated by religious ideas and served the need for spiritual development. In a desacralized world like ours, art enjoys total freedom. It is no longer even important that there is a spectator who appreciates it, anything goes.
But my limited understanding does not allow me to answer, with the tools of reason, where does this faculty of being able to experience so many pleasurable sensations come from when we allow ourselves to be invaded by aesthetic enjoyment. A matter that undoubtedly goes far beyond being able to say this is beautiful or ugly.
The fact that so many neurotransmitters agree to be able to transmit those feelings of joy before any manifestation of beauty, is for me a divine gift.
