My first real flight in over a year and I couldn’t have asked for a better landscape.
Gairloch, Scotland was my location and had I took my 3rd party drone apps advice seriously, I’d have left my drone at home and never captured any of this amazing scenery. According to my app (which has now been deleted), Gairloch is surrounded for miles by a gigantic geofence. “Restricted area” is what the app told me and I very nearly left my drone at home. I assumed it must be some kind of RAF training ground as I’ve been told that pilots use the Scottish highlands to sharpen their skills. Fortunately the app showed just a few unrestricted zones close by to where we were staying, which was just enough temptation to bring along my little Mavic. Thank god I did!
After setting up my drone beneath the supposed “restricted area”, I turned it on with the dread of a first time bank robber. And after pressing the “take off” button on my remote, I half expecting sirens to start wailing and a tactical armed forces unit to storm the beach and rugby tackle me to the ground. But, of course, none of that happened. Not even a mild warning. In fact, all that appeared on the screen was a gorgeous picture filled with mountains, beaches, and rolling waves nudging the tide further and further away from where I stood.
To be honest, the scenery was slightly wasted on my first flight, as I made all the mistakes a complete novice is expected to make. Working the remote control while trying to balance all the different colours and shadows through the camera was akin to being strapped into a one-man-band outfit. Nonetheless, this was expected and it wasn’t long before I was playing a decent tune again. So, knowing now that I had the green light to fly anywhere around Gairloch, I was more than excited to find some special locations. Turned out I was spoiled for choice.
I had a slight predicament with a loose phone connection which meant I had to use a ginormous galaxy pad as a monitor instead of my iPhone. 1st world problems and other than causing a minor meltdown when I came to edit the vids it all worked out very well.
I hope you all enjoy the footage I’ve captured. Scenery like this is hard to come by when you live in the middle of England. I’d happily endure the 11 hour drive it took to get to Gairloch just to do this all again. What a beautiful part of Scotland ❤️❤️
