It's been literally decades since we last slept under canvas. We decided to try out glamping in april in Dorset. I haven't flown my drone for ages and thought it would be a good time to get it in the air.
Whilst the sun shone beautifully in the daytime at night the temperature plummeted to below zero. It was almost unbearable to be honest.
The tents were on the top of the hill overlooking the caravan site in Bridport in Dorset and the drone was useful for getting an overview of the countryside, river and coastline. The plan was to go fossil hunting on this famous Jurassic coast. We walked down to the coastal area but access to the cliffs was limited due to potential rock falls.
Although the terrain appears quite flat the march up the hill from the car park was pretty steep.
So what is glamping about? Well the idea is simple. Glamorous Camping. You sleep in a tent but with all the modern conveniences. Shower, toilet cooking facilities TV etc. It was an experience for sure but you still need to have good weather especially at night when you are trying to sleep. I thought my nose was going to freeze.
It felt like a Bedouin tent in the daytime and arctic exploration at night.
Doing my Laurence of Arabia pose.
As you can see the tents are well equipped with everything including the kitchen sink.
I can't help but think and feel that this is a bit of a cop out. It's not like camping in the traditional sense and it's not like staying in a caravan or hotel.
It kinda fails on both fronts. In the daytime in summer this type of tent would be like an oven and at night in spring/autumn it is freezing.
I couldn't help but think of the millions of people who are forced to live like this in various parts of the world. For them it's not glamorous at all.
In recent years I have noticed that caravan holidays have become extremely expensive at the same time as caravans have shrunk in size. Bedrooms in caravans are almost impossible to use. There is no space either side of the bed to get in or out.
I first noticed this shrinkage accommodations in Europe last year. Eventually we started staying in hotels on the European tour. The caravans and chalets were just to small.
The tent was bigger but the heat and cold issues mean it's not an option for me.
Have you ever tried glamping? Have you noticed that caravans have gotten smaller and more expensive?
At least I got to fly the drone which was nice. 🤦♂️😂👍
