Today, I'll share what happened on November 1, 2020.
It was a tense morning when the skies darkened over our home.
The forecast warned of the Super Typhoon Rolly — one of the strongest storms ever hitting the Philippines.
It started with wind tearing through the trees and rattling the windows.
Heavy rains began to pour, flooding residential houses.
As the storm intensified, our bamboo bridge suddenly collapsed under the weight of the floodwaters and the relentless pressure of the storm.
The loss was heartbreaking.
We just heard a loud crack echo through the wind — and then after checking it, part of the riverside gave way under the heavy rain, causing a landslide.
Mud, rocks, and debris tumbled down, blocking the river, overflowing its banks, sweeping away everything in its path.
The day after Typhoon Rolly's fierce landfall, the sky gradually cleared, revealing a trash landscape.
The river was swollen, carrying debris and water logs downstream.
Despite the damage, my boy cousins decided to act quickly.
Their goal was to gather fresh bamboo from the riverbank to repair our collapsed bamboo bridge, which was vital for ensuring we could get help and supplies.
Determined, my cousin waded into the river, carefully choosing sturdy and straight bamboo poles.
Their teamwork was inspiring — lifting, cutting, and hauling the bamboo to the shore where others prepared the bridge
for repair.
With a fixed bridge but not in good shape yet, we crossed over and reached out to our friend who is deaf.
Her family was struck by the storm, losing some of their belongings.
We shared our resources — food, bottled water, and clothes — making sure they had what they needed.
These storms' destruction in 2020 teaches us to support each other, it's either resources or kindness.
What matters is that they felt more comforted knowing they were not alone.
