Black Lives Matter may be the movement that started the current protests against police brutality, but everyone knows they aren't the sole victims. If we put all the victims of the police in a gun diagram, the colors would overlap so much that we'd be left with a brown circle. The police are the problem.
And so when I hear people arguing that all lives matter and not just black, and I hear the counterpoint that some communities are affected more than others, I get confused. Why are we splitting hairs. Personally, I do believe that the black community is disproportionately affected by police violence, but that doesn't mean I think a special needs person being shot is any less tragic.
I'm autistic and it breaks my heart when I see how we are treated by the police just as much as it broke my heart watching some of the videos to come out of these protests. If I had the opportunity, I would be marching right now with Black Lives Matter.
And before anyone asks why I feel I can't March, I have an autistic 4 year old with no one to watch her except her mother and am considered an essential worker. I literally haven't had the opportunity.
