Walking among art and photography is something I really enjoy. I learn about history, artistic styles, ways of life and cultures. Several times a year, I can find very interesting photography exhibitions at the La Malagueta cultural centre, and the one I visited recently did not disappoint.
Caminar en medio de arte y fotografía es algo que disfruto mucho, aprendo de la historia, de estilos artísticos, modos de vida y culturas. En el centro cultural La Malagueta puedo encontrar varias veces al año exposiciones fotográficas muy interesantes y la que realicé los últimos días no me decepcionó.

El centro cultural funciona y desarrolla sus actividades en la plaza de toros La Malagueta. Tiene por supuesto sus horarios de apertura por la mañana y por la tarde y la entrada es siempre gratuita. Trato de no perderme ninguna de las exposiciones y suelo ir los fines de semana. Esta exposición estaba abierta desde mayo hasta el 18 de este mes de julio, por lo que fui justo a tiempo.
Cuando entré en el recinto me encontré con que había una exposición de más de 90 fotografías y que el fotógrafo era muy conocido, por supuesto no conozco a todos los artistas y por eso me encanta aprender. Se trata de un fotógrafo sudafricano pero que nació en Alemania, Jürgen Schadeberg y durante todo el largo recorrido del interior pude aprender sobre él, no sólo por las hermosas y humanas fotografías, sino porque en las mismas paredes del lugar se daba mucha información. En este caso no hay guía, pero no es necesaria, las descripciones son más que suficientes.
En ellas hay frases o cosas que el mismo Jürgen decía, pero también de gente que lo conocía y que dan testimonio. Falleció en el año 2020 en Valencia a los 89 años y ha dejado un legado fotográfico impresionante.
The cultural centre operates and carries out its activities in La Malagueta bullring. It is open in the mornings and afternoons, and admission is always free. I try not to miss any of the exhibitions and usually go at the weekends. This exhibition was open from May until 18 July, so I went just in time.
When I entered the venue, I found that there was an exhibition of more than 90 photographs and that the photographer was very well known. Of course, I don't know all the artists, which is why I love learning. He is a South African photographer who was born in Germany, Jürgen Schadeberg, and throughout the long tour of the interior I was able to learn about him, not only from the beautiful and human photographs, but also from the information provided on the walls of the venue. In this case, there is no guide, but it is not necessary, as the descriptions are more than sufficient.
They include quotes and stories from Jürgen himself, but also from people who knew him and who bear witness to his life. He passed away in 2020 in Valencia at the age of 89, leaving behind an impressive photographic legacy.

Recorrer y admirar cada una de las fotografías me daba una gran idea de como era España, sobre todo en la costa del sol, Torremolinos y Fuengirola, así se llaman las ciudades donde el artista vivió mucho tiempo. Y aunque esas fotografías no estuvieran en la exposición debo decir que entre su trabajo más famoso están las fotografías a Mandela en prisión.
Jürgen fotografiaba eventos de la vida cotidiana, fiestas, gente en la playa y también a muchos británicos que venían a esta zona, escapando del clima de allí y refugiándose en este y que intentaban tener o adaptar el estilo de vida propio al de estas latitudes.
Las fotografías pertenecen a los años 70 y a la tradición y cultura española que en ese momento se entremezclaba con la de otros países. También pude ver la vida en la costa, los pescadores y las playas ya sea con esta actividad económica y tradicional como también gente de vacaciones, disfrutando del agua y el sol.
Pude leer allí que el fotógrafo tenía un profundo sentido humanista ya que retrataba la vida diaria en sus más pequeños detalles, pero siempre de manera muy respetuosa y sin importar la nacionalidad. Esto ha convertido a su trabajo en un gran legado cultural.
Looking through and admiring each of the photographs gave me a great idea of what Spain was like, especially on the Costa del Sol, Torremolinos and Fuengirola, which are the names of the cities where the artist lived for a long time. And although those photographs were not in the exhibition, I must say that among his most famous works are the photographs of Mandela in prison.
Jürgen photographed everyday events, parties, people on the beach and also many British people who came to this area, escaping the climate there and taking refuge here, trying to adopt or adapt their own lifestyle to that of these latitudes.
The photographs belong to the 1970s and to the Spanish tradition and culture that at that time was intermingled with that of other countries. I was also able to see life on the coast, the fishermen and the beaches, both with this economic and traditional activity and also people on holiday, enjoying the water and the sun.
I read there that the photographer had a deep humanistic sense, as he portrayed daily life in its smallest details, but always in a very respectful way and regardless of nationality. This has made his work a great cultural legacy.

La humanidad, empatía y la profundidad con que Jürgen retrataba a las personas es algo raro de ver. Pude aprender a través de la escritura en las paredes, sobre su historia, sobre su recorrido por el mundo y su gran trabajo.
Su cámara era como una extensión de sus ojos, pero con ese sentido de humanidad y comprensión. Es así que la historia y la cultura de muchos lugares han quedado plasmados de esa manera a través de sus fotos, de su arte.
No sólo tomaba fotografías de fiestas y de gente divirtiéndose, sino también sabía cómo fotografiar el dolor, la angustia, la opresión. Fotografiaba los sentimientos y las emociones del ser humano y se ve claramente en los rostros de la gente que pude visualizar en cada una de estas maravillosas fotografías, la mayoría en blanco y negro, aunque había algunas en color. Maravilloso realmente. Pocos llegan a capturar el interior del ser humano.
The humanity, empathy, and depth with which Jürgen portrayed people is something rare to see. Through his writing on the walls, I was able to learn about his history, his travels around the world, and his great work.
His camera was like an extension of his eyes, but with that sense of humanity and understanding. That is how the history and culture of many places have been captured in this way through his photos, through his art.
He didn't just take photos of parties and people having fun, he also knew how to photograph pain, anguish and oppression. He photographed human feelings and emotions, and this is clearly visible in the faces of the people I could see in each of these wonderful photographs, most of them in black and white, although there were some in colour. Truly wonderful. Few people manage to capture the inner self of human beings.

Su legado es muy vasto, escribió muchos, libros, hizo documentales, recibió premios. A finales de los años 60 se asentó en España y creo que allí comenzó su amor por esta tierra.
Jürgen era una persona que sabía observar, no sólo mirar, que son cosas diferentes. Observar los espacios, las escenas, saber dónde ubicarse, los ángulos más adecuados. Era una gran profesional y eso queda absolutamente demostrado en este gran trabajo de más de 30 años.
No sólo tenía la cercanía física necesaria para tomar la fotografía sino la adecuada cercanía emocional para llegar a ver ese interior, las vivencias y sentimientos de las personas, poder capturarlos con su cámara. Todos los detalles estaban allí, todos.
His legacy is vast: he wrote many books, made documentaries, and received awards. In the late 1960s, he settled in Spain, and I believe that was where his love for this land began.
Jürgen was a person who knew how to observe, not just look, which are two different things. He observed spaces and scenes, knew where to position himself, and found the most suitable angles. He was a great professional, and this is clearly demonstrated in his outstanding work spanning more than 30 years.
He not only had the physical proximity necessary to take the photograph, but also the emotional closeness to see what was inside, the experiences and feelings of the people, and to capture them with his camera. All the details were there, every single one.

En uno de los pasajes decía que Jürgen sentía una profunda conexión con la gente común en especial con los malagueños, su alegría, autenticidad y su vida diaria. Eso lo cautivó. Recorría los barrios, las zonas menos visitadas, la vida del día a día y eso conquistó su corazón. Creo que lo comprendo perfectamente.
Jürgen resaltaba la belleza de la vida real, de la gente de a pie, de lo común y lo cotidiano, nada de superficialidades. Me encanta eso. Resaltaba la identidad, la dignidad a pesar de todas las dificultades que pudiera haber. No retrató Málaga como turismo sino como historia y cultura, además de su autenticidad.
Ha sido un recorrido formidable y de mucho aprendizaje que he podido disfrutar.

In one of the passages, it said that Jürgen felt a deep connection with ordinary people, especially the people of Malaga, their joy, authenticity and daily life. That captivated him. He explored the neighbourhoods, the less visited areas, everyday life, and that won his heart. I think I understand that perfectly.
Jürgen highlighted the beauty of real life, of ordinary people, of the common and the everyday, nothing superficial. I love that. He emphasised identity and dignity despite all the difficulties that might exist. He did not portray Malaga as a tourist destination but as a place of history and culture, as well as authenticity.
