Being young in an environment where money is something too important can become a complicated process. The fact of starting to work means a complete change of paradigms, and along with this many other things happen, both good and bad, that few dare to talk about.
For those who don't know me, my name is Claudio. I am 18 years old and a few months ago I finished high school. According to the existing law in Cuba, my native country, I must compulsorily spend one year of military service. I have been lucky enough not to be admitted to any military unit, so I find myself doing "socially useful work" (and those who know, can confirm that this is synonymous with doing absolutely nothing). Since I'm forced to miss the year anyway, I've decided to take advantage of my time and continue studying on my own until I enter university, and start working.
That's how I got to the Orfeón Santiago for the first time. This group is a professional choir founded by Electo Silva, dean of choral music in Cuba. Since its inception, it has managed to become a symbol of the city, and today it is responsible for maintaining that legacy. Since I have a background in other bands, it was easy for me to audition and immediately join the rehearsals.
From one moment to the next, my life has changed drastically. Why? People from different age groups come together in that space, but most of them are older than me. Then I have become friends with people who could perfectly well be my parents (and almost my grandparents). I am part of the bass string, and something that is very funny to me is that my leader worked for a while with my mother, also when she was starting to work after graduating.
As if this were not enough, it is obvious that the topics of conversation that come up when we meet are very far from the interests of people my age. It's very funny to be there, having a coffee, and listening to my classmates talk about how expensive food is at the supermarket, about how some soprano's son is doing at elementary school, about the fan that broke for that tenor, about the washing machine that that alto bought... And I could mention many other examples 😂.
These situations are almost surreal. Even more so if I start to explain that a subsidized salary in Cuba does not cover even half of the basic needs, but that would extend this post too much... Fortunately, the job as a choir singer does not require so much time, and I have space to devote to other things. However, I must say that I never thought that a job could be so much fun. Every day I learn from my elders and I always come home with a smile. I'm so happy!

Para quienes no me conocen, mi nombre es Claudio. Tengo 18 años y hace unos meses terminé el bachillerato. De acuerdo con la ley existente en Cuba, mi país natal, debo de pasar obligatoriamente un año de servicio militar. He corrido la suerte de no ser admitido en ninguna unidad militar, por lo que me encuentro haciendo "trabajo socialmente útil" (y los que saben, pueden confirmar de que esto es sinónimo de no hacer absolutamente nada). Como de todas maneras me veo obligado a perder el año, he decidido aprovechar mi tiempo y seguir estudiando por mi cuenta hasta entrar a la universidad, y comenzar a trabajar.
Así es como llegué por primera vez al Orfeón Santiago. Esta agrupación es un coro profesional fundado por Electo Silva, decano de la música coral en Cuba. Desde sus inicios logró volverse un símbolo de la ciudad, y en la actualidad se encuentra en la responsabilidad de mantener ese legado. Como tengo una trayectoria en otras agrupaciones, me fue fácil audicionar e inmediatamente unirme a los ensayos.
De un momento a otro, mi vida a cambiado drásticamente. ¿Por qué? En ese espacio coinciden personas de distintos grupos etarios, pero la mayoría son mayores que yo. Entonces me he vuelto amigo de personas que podrían perfectamente ser mis padres (y casi que mis abuelos). Formo parte de la cuerda de los bajos, y algo que me resulta muy gracioso es que mi líder trabajó durante un tiempo junto a mi madre, también cuando ella comenzaba a trabajar luego de graduarse.
Como si esto fuera poco, es obvio que los temas de conversación que salen cuando nos reunimos distan mucho de los intereses de las personas de mi edad. Es muy gracioso estar ahí, tomando un café, y escuchar a mis compañeros hablar de cuán caros están los alimentos en el supermercado, de cómo va en la escuela primaria el hijo de alguna soprano, del ventilador que se le rompió a aquel tenor, de la lavadora que se compró aquella contralto... Y podría mencionar muchos otros ejemplos 😂.
Estas situaciones son casi surrealistas. Aún más si me pongo a explicar que un salario subvencionado en Cuba no cubre ni la mitad de las necesidades básicas, pero eso extendería demasiado este post... Por suerte el trabajo como cantor de coros no exige tanto tiempo, y tengo espacio para dedicarme a otras cosas. No obstante debo decir que jamás pensé que un trabajo podría ser tan divertido. Todos los días aprendo de mis mayores y llego a casa siempre con una sonrisa. ¡Estoy tan feliz!
