Ever since Venezuela went through its critical situation from 2015 to 2020, I’ve always prioritized saving. But the truth is, it became difficult for me due to how complex and impractical it was.

Generally, shopping at various places used to take me more than three hours and left me extremely tired. Something that used to feel impossible for me is now a reality: I do all my shopping in one place—Hiperlider. Although, I'm now considering switching supermarkets. I’ll tell you why in this post.

A few months ago, livinguktaiwan made a post inviting people to talk about a list of products and their prices. I couldn’t join the initiative back then, but this post is inspired by that idea. It may not follow the exact guidelines, but I’d like to share my experience.

Every time I go shopping, I usually buy basic goods: pre-cooked corn flour, bread, Primor or Mary brand rice (my favorites), and pasta. In Venezuela, we eat a lot of pasta—especially short, shell-shaped ones. Oddly enough, the price of pasta went from $0.80 to $1.20 USD (half kilogram).

Right now, the most expensive item is meat. It’s unbelievable that the price of beef went from $7 to $13 USD in less than three months (I only buy entrecôte). On top of that, beef cuts for grilling are $17 USD. It’s insane. Venezuela is a meat-producing country, and we have some of the best cattle in the world, crossed with American, Argentine, and Uruguayan breeds. I know this because of my profession. A well-bred bull or cow can cost up to $3 million USD—that’s a lot of money (they’re used for breeding or to improve milk production). :P

To sum up, I eat red meat two or three times a week. It’s something I can’t cut back on due to my body type and dietary needs. Fish is also a must for me—it’s cheaper than meat. Depending on your preference, in my case, corvina (croaker) costs under $6 USD.

I don’t usually check the prices of each item; I just grab what I need and put it in the cart. It’s a habit of mine—maybe it’s an age thing. If my mom read this, she’d scold me. It’s not something she taught me. She always checks every price and if she can save $0.50, she’ll go to another store for it.

I always buy a lot of vegetables. The main one is avocado. Venezuelan avocados are a treasure—something out of this world—and there’s nothing else like them. The avocado tastes like butter. A kilo is currently $2.50 USD. I vaguely remember that just a few months ago, it was over $3 USD.

The most expensive fruit in Venezuela is apples, $5 USD. I always buy a pack. My favorite fruit is grapes, but they’re extremely expensive—200 grams for $5 USD. It’s outrageous. I always look at them in the display, put them in the cart, and then take them out. It’s a strange routine.

Grocery shopping in Venezuela is not easy. Currently, the minimum wage is $5 USD per month, and the actual weekly income for those without a college degree, profession, or trade is around $30 USD. Professionals earn between $160 and $3,000 USD, depending on the type of work and the sector they’re in. Higher salaries do exist, but these are typically tied to contract work, specific projects, or service-based agreements. I must emphasize that many people don’t earn this much and rely on remittances to get by. The situation in the country is extremely complex and difficult to explain.

In my case, I do grocery shopping for three people, and on Sunday I overspent, spending an additional $20 USD. My total was more than I had planned, but the one thing I know for sure is that grocery shopping is horrible for me. I usually don’t go to the supermarket on Sundays—I think like Gorayii: Sunday is sacred—but there was nothing left at home. I’ve been very busy, and my brother hasn’t had time either.

Anyway, after shopping, I ordered a taxi through an app and had an argument with the security guard at Hiperlider. He was rude and disrespectful. He made the taxi park far away from where I was just because the driver entered through the wrong side. They don’t have any signs or instructions at the entrance—it was an unpleasant experience. On top of that, I was hungry and just wanted to go home and rest. I’m now thinking of shopping at Forum; people have told me it’s a more pleasant experience. My comfort comes first. :P
